you could test the free eq2 trial to see how it has changed, its only the first levels but still gives you a picture. for lotr trying it out will be a bit harder (you would need a buddy code form a player).
personally i am not too impressed with lotr, gfx is great the game is polished but for me its missing something i didn't get addicted to it. but a lot other players are happy with it.so i am stillplaying eq2.
The fact is that different people prefer diofferent games.
LOTRO is fundamentally the same as most MMO'#s you'll have played excwept it looks better. In certain places a LOT better. IOt also has a specific story based quest line that you will follow all the way to level 50. This differentiates is from EQ2 which as brilliant as it is, has no great stopry backdrop to speak of.
I have played EQ2 for years and have now played LOTRO for the last few weeks. Personally I p[refer LOTRO,. but I do love the world of Tolkien which is a very big draw to the game.
Story and backdrop asuide, theres not much in it dude. EQ2 does have a much better class/race variety however.
neither. eq2 takes too much time out of your hands. lotro is just another average mmo with a lotr theme. i suggest waiting for age of conan. or if you want try guildwars. no monthly fee.
I am debating the same thing. The thing is I only have the original box version of EQ2. Do I need to buy the expansions to enjoy the game? If I have to put out money for the expansions I think I would just rather go with lotro.
for eq2 i would suggest to buy the echoes of faydwer expansion even if you have original game allready from back then. the boxed version of that expansion comes with all the other expansions and the original game included. Eof also adds zones for all level ranges as well as kelethin as starting area. you should usually get the eof box for ~40$ maybe a bit less, but in europe it can be hard to get in some areas (it sold better than expected and the european distributor seems to be slow with restocking). if you cannot find the box and you are on broadband you can buy the serial numbers online from some shops (www.dlgamer.com as an example) and download the game form soe.
I would suggest to try them yourself as well. Personally I didn't see anything in either game that made me want to continue past level 10-15. I also tried Granado Espada and though it was okay, but again not worth the time investment. I'm going to wait for Conan and Warhammer. Hopefully one of those games are going to breath some fun back into this genere.
I have played both EQ2 and wow since release and LOTRO for last 2 weeks.
I can honestly say that EQ2, for me, is a far better game in terms of gfx, content, variety , weapons, community and fun factor. I do like Lotro but it is a little shallow compare to EQ2 ( mainly due to all the content that has been added since release) and unless you are a real Tolkein fan, the EQ2 lore and storylines were more interesting to me.
Personal choice as always but EQ2 would get my vote as a game that you would like for longer based on current respective contents. Echoes expansion is heartily recommended but the others are not really necessary in my view.
This differentiates is from EQ2 which as brilliant as it is, has no great stopry backdrop to speak of.
What? EQ2 has a GREAT story backdrop. It's not from a famous novel series like LOTRO, but it's an awesome story that stands on its own two feet.
If LOTRO lost the LOTR skin and had to come up with its own lore, the game would be declared one of the worst MMOs ever released. As it is, people only really like it because it's LOTR.
As for the original OP, you should give EQ2 a try, especially if you haven't played it in a long time. The game has some great, mature communities that lack the WoW kiddy jokes about Chuck Norris, and there are tons of little things you can do with your time.
If you don't like it, then you could always put down $50 for LOTRO, but keep in mind, this game is WoW with a LOTR skin. And if you're sick of WoW, then you probably won't like LOTRO, which is almost the same thing with a few new features and better graphics.
As it stands, I don't believe there is a better MMO ought right now than Everquest 2.
Totally agree - the EQ2 lore and storyline through the quests are amazing and deep. One of the reasons ou SHOULD play this game is down to its strength of content.
If you're sick of WOW may I suggest SWG? It's the next big thing in MMORPG's now with all the new things in it and it's got a booming, friendly population and terrific game play.

EQ2 is like WoW. LOTRO is like WoW. EQ1 is like WoW. The whole level based, questing, xp, rep, gear, raid grinding fantasy MMO genre is like WoW.
Oh wait they really aren't all "like" WoW because they all are different in many ways while being the same in others because ::gasp:: WoW is built on the foundations that also built those MMO games.
P.S. If you bring up the "LOTRO copied wow's UI" line of reasoning am going to have to own you hard.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
EQ2 I already have on my shelf...I hear alot about how its more casual friendly these days and how certain servers are flourishing...yet im not sure.
I can't deside wether I want to try Lotro or EQ2
I highly recommend Hello Kitty: Island Adventure.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
I have played EQ2 off and on for a year and a half now. Love the game. I have done so with WoW too, but honestly never loved the game the way I do EQ2. I have been playing LOTRO since Pre-Order Open Beta and while it is a nice game, I personally resubbed to EQ2 today because I miss that game and LOTRO is starting to bore me.
-------------------------------- Currently Playing: Guild Wars 2 and Path of Exile
Ive been playing Wow till the point im sick of it...and considering those two seems like best choices that is available right now
If your sick of WoW I can guarantee LotRO will get old very quick unless your an avid Tolkien fan. The game does have some differences and is very well put together but the basic game mechanics are a true WoW clone all the way. Based on this I would have to say you'd be better off with EQ2 as it is very different than WoW.
I would recommend a beta, Chronicles of Spellborn, PotBS, or other future game. Most of the MMOGs on the marketplace currently have some serious flaws and some are just boring wastes of time like LoTRO and EQ2. I would recommend Saga of Ryzom for something different, it's problem however is a very low population.
theres also a lot of good free stuff out there now that you can try
Anarchy Online, oooolllld outdated graphics but still popular and playable
Guild wars is free though you have to buy it,but the original prophecies campaign pack is bargain bin prices now. its not your typical MMO as such, but its very enjoyable to play and has stunning graphics, even running on a low end system. PVP is brilliant, totally skill based and you can employ NPCs to help you if you cant find a group.
Rappelz, easily my favourite freebie MMO and a very playable game. Looks like guildwars, beautiful scenery, plentiful mob models, and now with epic 4 weeks away a huge variety of classes, skills and a socket system ala diablo/wow for armor and weapons. Also has mounts from level 5 ish. PK system is a bit wierd, the quests are grindy and theres gankers but otherwise a great game.
LOTRO is a great game,so far ive been playing for 2 weeks and enjoying it. no idea whether ill get bored eventually, all depends on how well and often turbine implement the regular content updates. Its the generic do quests and level up,buy skills etc type of affair with monster play as PVp in a huge area called ettin moors.certainly not ground breaking, but one of the better MMOs to be released as of late.
im looking forward to POTBS,spellborn and gods and heroes, but no idea when theyll be out.
I didn't have much time to post earlier so I wanted to go into a little more detail at why I went back to EQ2 after playing WoW again and LOTRO.
LOTRO is a nice game. It has a very stable release and Turbine already has some nice content additions on the way. I can say from experience with DDO that Turbine knows a thing or two about keeping their subscribers happy with content releases. All of that said I have a leveled ever class to 15 and beyond and honestly I just can't drag myself to play them past the Lonelands quest line (20ish range). I am not a big LOTR fan, as such the lore just isn't enough to keep me invested in the game. I am not a big crafter so that side doesn't keep me to the game either. I do like what Turbine has done with the Epic Book/Chapter quest but outside of those the quest just annoy me. I thought I killed a lot of boards and wolves in Warcraft, but even in that game I didn't touch as many boars and wolves as I have within LOTRO. The other thing that kills LOTRO for me is the lack of a true caster class. I understand for Lore reasons why Turbine did things the way they did, but none the less I am a caster player at heart and Lore-Masters just don't cut it for me.
Those things said, LOTRO is a beautiful game. Even on low graphic settings it is by far one of the prettiest MMOs out there. To me (at least with my system specs) it blew V:SoH completely out of the water.
As far as EQ2 the game isn't as pretty (though it isn't ugly by any means). But where EQ2 shines is the quest and shear number of things to do and see. The game has so many choices of races, and classes that it makes Wow and LOTRO look simple. And also like Turbine, SOE knows all about giving great content updates and churns out new expansions and adventure packs at a steady rate keeping the game fresh. EQ2 has a very mature community (something that LOTRO currently is laking). While a vast majority of players of EQ2 are in the 60-70 range, new expansions race additions like the Fae coupled with new starting areas) keep even low level populations fairly active.
Over all though unless you are just a huge Lord of the Rings / Middle Earth buff I really think EQ2 is the way to go. SOE is and remains dedicated to keeping the world of Norrath alive and growing. In November there is going to be yet another expansion along with a new neutral city and a new neutral race. I believe that the game has at least four or five more years in it, so your time invested will not be a waste.
-------------------------------- Currently Playing: Guild Wars 2 and Path of Exile
Dude, I would definately reccommend EQ2. The game is VERY beautiful, especially the spell effects and lighting. Not only is it beautiful, the game has so much to do. Most games you play now a days are all about end game and raiding. EQ2 isnt about that, its more about the experience to level 70 (soon to be 80). Right now is a great time to join as well, so many people are either coming back to the game or just starting, there are almost always people on. (I logged in today and had a group going for Deathfist Citadel within 10 minutes) The expansions (especially Ecoes of Faydwer) have added a HUGE amount of content to the game. I honestly feel that EQ2 is just now starting to shine and that we will soon see this game rise in popularity. So I hope to see you soon on EQ2 man, take care
I've been looking at EQ2 also. I've been playing WOW for about 2 years now, the last 7 months were the best because i got my brothers into WOW too. So questing and killing horde is fun.
But im getting to the point, again, that i need to move on. WOW is a fun game but i can't play it forever. Just need to find a time to let my bro's know that im done with WOW and im going to play something else. Hopefully they will join me too.
I tried the new trial of EQ2 and i liked what i seen, so i think that might be my next mmo until WAR comes out.
