Vanguard Boats are FUN, and more

Nikoz78Nikoz78 Member UncommonPosts: 910
My higher level RL friend helped me get a boat last night. I must say - it really is freaking awesome!

I love the open end world. I remember the flying mount stress test from beta 5. Man that was SO much fun.

If they would increase xp gain, add a bit more solo content and add something like 'mentoring" from EQ2 I'd be happy.

Also, they need more mini games and social activities, like a reason to hang in a tavern, player-placed camp fire, etc.

I'm a ranger and yesterday I was taming level 1 chickens and making them fight each other (like a cock fight) lol. That was amusing as my buddy and I made bets on the winner.

Vanguard will bounce back in due time.

I agree. I think Vanguard wil do ok under SOE.
IF and this is a big IF, those rabid Vanbois( the ones who do more harm than good) will ease up and let people see that Good part of the community the game has to build upon.

I honestly hope SoE does bring VG back from the edge like they did EQ2. The game they hyped was pretty nice, but like I said in another thead, by the time SoE has a chance to begin addressing the myriad of problems plaguing VG, AoC and WAR will be out, not mention expansions for LOTRO.

The game I do not believe will ever recover from its rocky beginnings, but will live on with a small community, while the new shiney MMOs will take most gamers attention away.

    The thing is:

AoC is full of zones and instances. Something I don't care for. In EQ2 you had 50 people zoning into the front door of your house (instanced housing). In AoC you have player cities but there will be 50 other cities at the same spot (instanced). So you can attack another player city, but no one will be around to see it unless they zone into that instance.

WAR is much of the same. It's DAoC on steroids. While I loved DAoC and am sure to love WAR also, it's just not the same as VG at all. It's focus is RvR, which is fine. It's full of zones, and as I said I don't care for that. I was spoiled on the huge open planet maps of SWG. I will say, however, that WAR *might* end up being a WoW killer.

LOTRO... all I can say is... nothing very nice. I beta tested it and, even though I am a huge LOTR geek, found it very disappointing. Hand holding, tiny world, nothing very original (smoking was cool), TONS of zones and instances. It's a WoW clone in every way. Also, yeah it's polished but with such a tiny game world that does not impress me personally. I ran from Brandywine Bridge to Buckleberry Ferry in 37 seconds. In the books thats supposed to be a distance of 20 miles. Not saying it should really be 20 miles away in the game... but 37 SECONDS!!??

    No.

When I played Vanguard back at release, the state of the automated boats (the ones that take you betwen continents) was very poor.  When I was with my group, we would warp all over the place, some of us would randomly dropped into the ocean.

    Has this improved at all?

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I remember the insane bugs on the npc boats as well.

As for player boats, yeah there are still some bugs... my friend seemed to always be up in the air if he stood in the middle of it. But if he stands next to me or at the front of the boat it's ok.

Also, every time I hit a chunk line in the sea, it pops me off the boat-controls to where I'm just standing on it not controlling it (so I have to hit "U" again every time I cross a chunk).

I also fell through the boat a couple times (but just hit "U" and you'll pop back on it).

Minor bugs that are annoying to be sure, but they are still fun in their current state. The game is going into bug fixing and polish mode.

I'm having fun most of the time and don't mind playing while they fix the bugs. I understand a lot of folks won't and that is understandable.

I hope Vanguard does bounce back and "find its legs" over the next 6 months so that I can give it a try when I finally have a computer that will run it... barring any disasters between now and then that would drain my "omg I needs a new computer" fund.

I am intrigued by this chicken taming bit.

Leave this forum and come back when you have worthwhile posts to make. I just looked through your history and you haven't made a single decent post here. I'm starting to think you're being paid by someone to be here... That or you're a pissed off kid because your comp wouldn't run VG

I'm still enjoying Vanguard but what i like to know besides of owning a boat and sailing to where ever you want what the fun factor is?Do you see seamonsters that when you traveling see swimming in the ocean? As far i know there's no ship>ship combat yet. So yeah i understand the simple words of fun just to have the boat but i really like to read more about what it is that makes it fun.

Now when i adventure on land my fun comes from interaction, this can be done by questing, harvesting but atleast there is something to interact with and thats what makes it fun for me on land. Thats the fun i want on sea and so far with boats its abit limited unless afcourse you could say more things that i might not know of yet with boats. Future plans i'm aware of  and want afcourse a boat nevertheless, but just saying at the moment please explain the fun factor to already own a boat. Kinda have the same feeling about housing, want one but other then storage space see no real use for it yet.

I have to agree with most of what is said in this topic.. I think under SOE it will improve (game wise and getting people into the game), but will nonetheless suffer from its unsteller release.  Personaly though I am loving hte game... except for one thing.

On my server I did a test kind of late evening time (did /who all 1 and so forth all the way till /who all 50) to see how many peopl were on my server.  There were between 700-800 people on the server.  Now this was not a massive peak time, but it in no way was the middle of the night either.  I recall starting EQ back in the days of kunark (and perhaps velious or just before..) and they had server counts of how many people were on when you logged in and most times like this Zeb was around 2000 or so.  Now with the larger world of VG 800 isnt enough.. and I have tried testing a bit during more weekend peak times and what not and it is much better, but I should be able to log on in the evening (West Coast times) and not have a TON of trouble finding groups... but as it is now even if there are 100 or so people in my lv range on, there are so many areas that people are grouping (which i love.. just not populated enough) and it also seems not that many people looking for groups or to build groups.. and alot of guild groups. Which is another problem I find.. personally I am in a real small guild and I am sure that is part of the problem because alot of people seem to group primarily with guild members.  now some levels and areas are beter than others... but in the end what it comes down to is I feel we need more people on at times that are complete peak times.

For this I feel server merges would be great... if you doubled up the people I think finding groups would jump up alot and I know personally I would bother logging on more often at less peak times.  Because in the end I can solo (warrior) and its occasionaly fun in new areas.. but hte real fun comes from grouping and I have been having a heck of a time finding one.

There is, at present, no other "fun factor" in owning a boat other than RP fun. It feels fun just sailing around in the huge open world, bugs and all.

To invite people to go sailing with you, to check out some of the islands, etc.

There isn't any marine life added yet. Sea turtles don't count as they spawn on land and then walk into the water.

As for some of the current features with boats:

    * Anyone in your group may hit "U" and pop on the boat (this helps when you are anchored near a shore with no docks and can't jump in it).

    * You boat remains in the world even when you are far away on land. So you can always come back to port and find it there.

    * If your on a big boat, you can anchor far from the coast and then call a small boat to take you and your friends to shore (assuming of course you or a friend has more than one boat of different sizes).

    * The direction of the wind effects your speed... at present the wind seems to always blow West.

I did a fair amount of taming in UO too, and then I was a Hunter in WoW. "That's so old"... Well, that's just what made that feature interesting to me. It's better than the "summon a pet out of thin air/from inventory" like so many other games.

Vanguard certainly does have zones.. just because they choose to call them chunks doesn't change that.

Also, they're already planning instances and if SOE decides to give this game the rewrite it needs to be worthwhile.. you can expect them to add MANY instances.  Instances allow far more complicated and reliable encounters.. something Vanguard needed badly.

The ships are kind of cool... for a while.  But after you've sailed around on them for a while.. you realize that all you've done is take a sight seeing trip, and there's nothing else to do with them.  Get a bard.. they're cheaper and work on land ( as well as sea ).

Yeah, it does change 'that.' Immersion is never broken by fake and/or artificial borders. You either 'get it' or you don't. The world if freaking huge and wide open. You can go anywhere.

I thought the same thing when I played this game.  No zones, but I freeze when crossing landmasses at predetermined locations.  They may not call them zones, but they sure felt that way.

Anywho, I seem to remember a lot of threads here calling BS when posters said SOE would take over the game from Sigil.  Don't be so quick to discount things.  SOE already said that improving performance was one of their top issues, and a good way to do that is to introduce instances.  If they can do it without getting crazy, it might come out pretty good.

That's the quandry we as gamers face. We either get a smaller world and more linear instanced content ala WOW and LOTRs or we get the open ended sandbox play of Vanguard. As a big gamer, my bent would normally lead toward sandbox except for one key point. Companies cannot pull of Oblivion in a MMORPG and do it right. They screw up class balance, don't add enough content, forget the lore, or in general just mess the game up royally.

When someone actually does a sandbox game right and makes the lore as deep as EQI and the quest and content really good we are going to see a helluva game but so far they cannot take their money and their four-five years and pull it off.

I could have swore that some of the boats traveling to specific places weren't put in the game at release.  Like going from Kojan to Khal by boat.  I know I could take the boat anywere in Kojan and was fine.  No porting, no dropping off.  I though that they kept the other boat paths out becuase they weren't working.  Are you sure you're not refering to beta?

I'm really not sure what you're talking about.  I though the topic was about player controlled boats.

I look forward to owning my own boat one day.

    Wish Darkfall would release.

I think there's a boat in one of those videos.
