Russian peasants use this method to multiply two numbers together without multiplication rules.

It only needs its users to add and halve numbers.

    Russian were always ahead of the rest of the world in nonlinear approach in tackling things of this nature.

    The last part was sarcasm.

    I read somewhere that some people still use this method in Moscow.

    The poor chaps use stones though instead of pen and paper. =(
