How is SWG Now?

Hey guys, I am a day 1 player from SWG I started the day it was released. I quit soon after the CU, How bad did NGE screw up the game? Is it playable? I am thinking of rejoining SWG but would like some of your guys info first. Whats the Most populated server now? Just any info you guys can give me would be great. Also my character is a Jedi (Was jedi before the camp was put in) I know you can choose Jedi as a starting class now is there tons of them running around? Also if there anything to distinguish My Jedi from the new ones?

Sorry for all the questions, just would like to know :)

It's more than playable - it's great fun.

If you were a Jedi, you'll now be an Elder Jedi with all the perks.

Bria, Anzhai, Starstrider, etc all have healthy, no booming populations.

    Welcome back!

Sounds good, my jedi was on Bria glad it stills has a good population. Get a few more good post about SWG and I may be reactivating my subscription :)

EDIT: I also wanted to ask, dose my SOE account with SWG have to have SWG Active before I can post on the forums? I can seem to find the post button with my account lol. or am I just blind?

the NGE destoyed the game as you know it. Don't be suprised if you see many things gone that you liked preNGE.

Yeah its playable, they're still (re) adding (old) stuff (in a new coat) so with a lil luck it might survive for another year

Bria, Bloofin and Chimaera seem to have the most players on... all others..not so much

Jedi is indeed the fav prof.. look left: Jedi.. look right: hey, another Jedi. Commando is popular too since it became the new Alpha.

..aand you can get an Elder robe and crystal at Ben Kenobi's House on Tatooine

    1. Compared to PreCU, it is absolutley terrible.

    2. Comparer to CU, it is really really bad

    3. Compared to NGE relaease,  improved.

The subscription and populations issues that SWG has now will never be fixed. The CU and NGE alienated way to many people for this game to ever have healthy subscription numbers. If servers are ever merged into 2-3  maybe the game will be playable. Until then, the game is really desolate. The top 3 servers might have some decent activity at times, but that is it.

The next 2 chapters look to have some significant imporvements. This is a good time to come check them out, if only on a free trial.

As a 4 year vet of the game, I LOATHED everything about the NGE.  I couldn't stand the fact that they destroyed the sandbox aspect about it, skill based system, etc.  I stayed on a few months after the NGE but just couldn't stand it.  This had nothing to do with not being able to 'pwn' in pvp, as I also LOATHE pvp.  I was strictly a pve player.

I recently came back and tried a new strategy- I started on a new server and went entirely non combat with both toons.  I now have a level 90 entertainer and a level 58 structure trader and I'm LOVING the game.  Pre CU/NGE my toons were a Master Bounty Hunter (Ranged all the way, none of the hand to hand bs for me!!) and a fully templated Jedi (pre village).  I never did crafting prior to the NGE, but I really love it now.  I'm starting up my own business and having a ball.  The cantinas are packed (at least on Bloodfin) once again and I get some pretty good tips that I channel into my structure enterprise.

I know that with the next publish Beastmaster (creature handler) is being re-implemented and former CH's are losing their minds over this one.  I'm glad to see it coming back, as I never got to try that either prior to the nge.

So basically, I'm liking SWG once again.  Is it the great game it used to be? Hell no.  Is it the total piece of crap it was after the NGE hit? Hell no.  But it is (for me at least) a really nice and fun way to kill some time.

Go here to get some answers:

I see the SOE haters have come out of the wood work. Just read what they write - about as un-objective as you can get. They don't play so how can they really know if it's a fun SW MMO anymore? My advise? Ignore them. You'll find a lot of Vets who still play.

One thing I'd recommend is as soon as you log in change your controls under options:

    * At the very bottom of Controls un-check "Off Set Camers" to rid yourself of the crappy over-the-shoulder view.

    * Under Key Maps select "Star Wars Galaxies Modern" from the drop-down menu to change controls to your mouse like before.

    * There are two ways to fight: 1) FPS style where you fire your specials from the number keys; 2) classic MMO style. It's a simple choice. Hit the "Y" key to toggle between them.

    * You hit the "Alt." key to get a free mouse mode.

    * Hit the right "Del" or "." key to turn off chase camera.

The hot spots have changed too. JTL, new buffs, etc. have changed where people hang out. Explore some and enjoy. This is still the most complex and open ended MMO out there and getting better with each new Publish.

    /peace

P.S. Bloodfin (the only one that hits Heavy Load these days, far as I know), has the biggest server of them all. Some other populated servers would be Bria, Chilastra, Farstar, Flurry, and Ahazi - among the most populated of all the servers.

Thanks for all the info Nikoz.

I'm not gona hate on the people putting SOE or SWG down, cause I asked for all opinions :)

But I'm a big Star Wars nerd so they would of had to screw it up pretty bad for me not to be interested.

Again thanks for all the input everyone and  please keep the opinions coming!

    Its real bad.

I played for around 3 years, the first "revamp" scared off most of the players, but just as they started to trickle back in after they fixed it up a bit the NGE hit and wiped it out again.  Except this time people didn't come back, because it was AWFUL to play and extremely buggy.  Even the nice smooth character animations it once had are now broken.  The whole thing is an example of what happens when you let clueless people run and develop an MMORPG.

The game now is like a freak mix of DDO's and WoW's combat, except nowhere near as good as either.  The "sandbox" feel to the game is completely gone and it now has set "classes" and a very linier feel.

And yes, everyone is either a Jedi or bounty hunter (at least they were when I last tried it).  It looks like Starwars....but it's not.

    1. you must have played a long time ago.

    2. i know plenty players that aren't jedi or bounty hunter. infact the 2 most popular professions you will find in the game now are smugglers and commando's, not jedi and bounty hunters. jedi's are fairly weak now and have to really put up a good fight to beat some of the worthy professions.

    3. yes the population is not like pre cu, but compared to 5 or 6 months ago i would say it has atleast doubled.

    4. also pre cu you almost everyone was based on templetes, so you did not have unique professions, also everyone had 1 goal. chase to be a jedi....

now with your expertise points you can really mould you character and make him completely unique.

    5. combat does feel odd to any new comer or returning vets. but after a day or 2 of gameplay it will grow on you and you will see that it fits the game quite well.

( please if you post info make sure it is up to date, half you info is nowhere near the truth. )

Lmao, It has not doubled, In fact it has decreased even more. I just subscribed to my account 3 weeks ago and did not see anyone except gold farmer bots in towns. There is less people now then their was before 6-9 months ago when I played.

If you don't like my opinion then take a hike.

Have to admit, i tried SWG shortly after original release and hated it. Mindless grinding forever it seemed. No quests, nothing what i would call "content". After this I went to eq2 / WoW and never bothered to go back.

Now, its totally different, so glad i tried it. Having a ton of fun. There are some things that are a bit odd. It can be buggy at times, but the depth is there, the content is there. Graphics still look good even after 4 years as well.

Its really a different game now. One that i am enjoying very much !

I think there is a trial, check it out do the intro area, and start legacy you might be suprised.

As for population, i play on bloodfin and there are tons of people around. The server has not  dropped below medium since i started about a week ago. Lots of new players i am meeting as well that came from WoW etc.

I recently started the game again.

After NGE so many things were broken, it was unplayable, my two favourite classes disappeared and it didn't feel any more star warsy.

Game is currently okay, bugs are largely gone, the talents tree helps make the game a little more complex (NGE was too simple) but not much.

I am however waiting on what version 6 offers with Beast Masters.

Population wise my server is dead, very dead so transfer might be a good option or try a new toon on a recommended server.

If Beast Masters offers me the complexity of Creature Handlers it will be a game I will continue to play.

Graphics wise, I have everything on maximum and it does look a little dated, I hope they address this.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

My wife was a Master Creature Handler pre-CU and I played with it a lot... the new Beast Master puts it to shame as far as complexity goes.

it more than just stinks-it actually is excrement.

if you were a jedi they disregarded all the blood sweat and tears you put into unlocking and gave it to everyone. but you can glow!

all the servers have less populations than any  other time since launch.

    run away!

Chimaera is another server with nice population. There are big PvP battles each day (15-30vs 15-30) and many active guilds. Nice RP population also. A lot of nice features were reintroduced/added and the game is fun!!

Reasons people dont like it is very simple, the FPS combat is terrible. The community that used to be there is gone. Still buggy even after all this time. If you want to play with other peeps you have to transfer your character to 1 of maybe 3 servers that have anyone on them, or of course make a new character which would suck IMO since the older players have higher lvl characters on other servers.

There are many reasons and those are just a few, I, like a dumbass, paid for this month to check it out and my server Naritus is a wasteland. I have flown to just about everywhere and never see anyone. The best thing SOE can do is to merge servers to get populations up then as people maybe come back then start adding servers but until then you are going to see this problem.

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.

I agree we need a server merger in some shape or size  or a server transfer to brand new servers then delet the old so that no 1 get to keep there  old citys and stuff its a brand new start for all old and new

Op, you may have a free vet trial available to you as well.   Not sure if the most recent one has ended yet or not.  Try loggin in under your old information and see.   That is really the only way you will be able to tell.  Personally, I cant stand the changes the NGE brought, but there are some vets who seem to like it.  /shrug

If you liked the way things were it may be tough to get used to, but since you quit awhile before the NGE happened you may like it better than me.   It really is an entirely different game, so keep that in mind.   With each new free trial I go back and try it out, praying that I will like the game again, but so far no such luck.  I will say that it is alot better than it was when the NGE was first released, but it would have been hard to make it worse so.....

Anyway, good luck with it.  I hope you are able to enjoy it.

Honestly, there's little excitement from playing SWG.  There's no Risk vs. Reward.  The controls are HORRIBLE!  The UI requires extensive modification to the default settings in order for it to be even remotely playable.  The Twitch based controls were never intended to be infused into this game thus combat is what I'd call "clunky".

There are a few reason to play SWG:

IF you like to pretend, this might be a game for you.  I am not being sarcastic.  Roll playing might have a strong place since the new Story/Actor Event Perks are breing introduced.  Basically this reduces PEX's position so there's a limited requirement to have live, paid, staff become involved in "RP".  Now you can do it all yourself, with hit to your credits.

Rollplaying is the only thing this game has going for it at the momment.  That's not a bad thing.

PvP is a joke.  You have some of the worst online community flocking to Restuss to call you all worst spelt insults you could think of.  Next to WoW I can't think of any other game with a poorer PvP community.

To sum SWG up: Clunky game play with good rollplay potential.

p.s. A lot could be said for all versions of SWG, but this is not better then anything preceeding it.
