Hello.I have just bought this game and would like to know if the hunter in lotr can tame a beast like wow and other games. If not hunter than which classes can..thank you!
First off LOTF? Lord of the flies? Its LOTRo, Secondly no Class in LOTRo can tame a beast though the Loremaster can summon Bears and Revans, i think even a eagle but i am not positive. the Hunter is not a pet class but is more like a Mage in WoW.

That would be loremaster--but it's not tamed, it's summoned. You could look in the manual, amazing the information they put in there.

there are 2 pet classes in the game, loremasters and captains. Loremasters get animals, first raven and then bears, dunno what or if they get something else later, I've not checked.
Captains get heralds. three different heralds but I do not know exactly what they do as my captain still does not have his first (and i'm playing another character at the moment, so ...).
But one thing is certain, pathing issues are present for ALL pets at the moment. So they tend to be more a frustration than else. Hopefully this will be fixed soon, but at the moment... don't jump off cliff with your pet out.

thank god they didn't stuff up hunters by doing that. a hunter should be powerful ranged , good trapping decent hand to hand fighting class. not some crappy class that NEEDS a pet just to survive. two thumbs up to Turbine for fixing this stupid trend

Erm...Hunters are nowhere near decent in H2H in LOTRO except they can cripple to gain range.... Sure they are devastating in ranged DPS'ing, loads of threat as well.
As for Captain Heralds (pets), they give might and agility bonus, Morale bonus and the last one I think gives Morale and Power bonus. Can be decent as meat shields as well but that's not their primary role since they generate little to no threat.
Yes, and they are, since the lore-master is pretty busy with crowd controlling and buffing and the minstrel with healing. That's it with the ranged classes...
Which brings me to my favorite aspect of the class mechanics - Its finally feeling like combat when you fight. Almost all classes go for melee and DO something, no more goofy looking superpower-mage/necro/warlock/illusionist/coercer WHAT - EVER robe-wearing DPS machines in the back and 1 guy up front (Lets be honest, the ideal group in most other games is Tank/Healer/Range/Range/Range)... That feels SO much more like a REAL fight.... thumbs up!

I cant wait for them to fix this. It's been an issue since beta and still something they've not fixed. I cant recall how many times i submitted bug reports of my bird not flying over water in beta. One thing i've gotten to do by second nature now is before I attack, is to make sure my pet is around and didn't get hung up on a branch or rock on the way. Sad when you gotta do that.

None really. No-one can tame pets out in the wild. And the pets that are in game are pretty weak. If you were hping to be a Warlcok/ Hunter or Magician/ Necromancer, your kind of out of luck. Loremaster pets are essentially DoTs (only slightly better than the pet that an EQ 1 SK gets), and Captain pets are utterly feeble DoTs that have some nice party buffs associated with them. The hunter class here is quite strong, but gets no pets at all. I think the Devs wanted to emphasize the abilities of your chracter over that of your pet (which is just as well because pet pathing is horrible). LoTRO has no "true" pet classes, imo.
Loremaster bears were on par with WoW Hunter pets in the closed beta, but got reduced to big fizzy DoTs by the time of open beta. Even with Hardy Bear slotted, they can't tank worth beans (good damage if you think of them as a DoT however...and enough of a distraction to allow you to run for your life if you utterly bone a pull when out soloing). Maybe if you used up all your class slots on pet buffs they would tank better, but I'm not willing to do that personally.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
No character in that game controls a pet exactly like in Wow. May chnage in the future though. If you like the pet system of Wow you might like Gods and Heros. Every toon in that game can control minions. Just a thought.
