It's LOTR... yeah but still close to the rest of fantasy mmorpg out there. And with over 7 million people playing WoW, will this game make it? Maybe Gandalf and his friends can help it stay alive a little. I dunno.
We also have Vanguard and soon Warhammer... fantasy, fantasy, fantasy... same shit different name...
I think it's a bad time.

Based on reviews I've read about LoTR it also is quite diffrent from WoW. I have yet to see two fantasy MMO's that I would say are the same IMHO. I haven't tried LoTR yet but I'll start this weekend, however of all the MMO's Ive played thus far WoW and EQ2 are the best. Again IMHO
As for Warhammer I know about the tabletop version, and don't see how the MMO version could be anything other than one big grief killing PvP fest.
Nah I don't wanna piss off people. I just don't understand why they even use time and money on a game like this. At this time.
Why not wait and make it even more special, with some own ideas, better design etc. Make a NEW fantasy game that will rule them all.
This and Warhammer are very close to WoW. Good or bad? I think it's bad. Why copy and old game that so many have been or playing right now. People whant something new. Not enter a game that is close to the ones they have been playing for some years.
I just don't understand it. Thats all. ^^,
there's one sad thing here.... that's you....
Not everyone likes WoW, for various reasons. Me, I don't like the grafics. I think it's dead ugly and I wont touch it with a 10 foot pole. The gameplay isn't for me either.
Just because it's fantasy, doesn't mean it's WoW...
Oh and like WoW is so freakin' original? it's just a polished copy/paste of games before it.

Different story line, varied mechanics, change of scenery, etc. I guarantee that most players have similar games sitting on their shelves, but will continue to buy games.
According to sales reports, LoTR is doing fine.
Also, just because it's a fantasy MMO doesn't put make LoTR the same game as others. For example, VSoH is more of a sandbox and will attract that type of player. AoC may be too violent for some, and who knows people may have just gotten burned-out on WoW.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
Well for one, there's a pretty good chance that the game will succeed, e.g. create profit for Turbine. WoW has exxploded the player base of MMOs to above 9 million and not all of them continue to play the game. When people stop playing WoW, and they do this all the time, many of those will go look for another game. In a way the market for MMOs is better then it ever were, because you got a lot more people interested in the genre, then say 3 years ago. I know WoW has a lot of players, but imagine how many "homless" players WoW has created as well, players who want some new content to see some new characters to level. A lot of these players will go shopping around the other games out there. In this situation LOTRO actually has a very good chance to attract some of this crowd. It has enough new content to keep players interested, but it also put's itself quite close to the WoW formula, making the game a familar place to inhabit.
And no a game does not need 7-9million players to succeed. I'd say 200k would be enough to make the economy go around and 300k subscribers a clear success. Before WoW it would be near impossible to have these subscription numbers. I think only EQ1 got above (around 400k), SWG 250k subs and offcause lineage with 2mil subs back then (in asia). If you can release a well polished and content rich game these days its much easier to get these numbers, because of the WoW nomads. The market has never been better...

That's not what I was saying at all. If you cant keep up or understand the conversation, stay quiet. I'm perfectly fine with someone saying LOTR:O is not a good game as long as they have a reason. I'm not like this just about this game. I'm like that about everything. I'm also against someone who's not played the game coming in and posting "Why even make this game? WoW came first so that's what we should all play" threads. If you don't like the game, then why come onto a message board about it? For people who dislike this game so very much, a lot of people troll these boards on a regular basis just to bash it. It means A.) You need something more constructive to do in life or B.) You didn't play the game but you want to bash it because you read the bad reviews and skipped the good ones and you want to give your "2 cents" about a game you know nothing about.
I'll not post after this though as the troll is getting what he wants and I refuse to continue feeding trolls.

LOTR is just too good a brand name to not make money out of it, be glad they made a decent game of it and not just used the brand name as a front end for a graphical chatbox..
If you want a fresh breeze through the MMO world keep your eyes open for Hellgate: London coming out this summer.

Let's see
If everyone just throws there hands up and says "Oh well WOW is fantastic, no need to make MMORPG's anymore" it would be really sad. The people who bought WOW when it came out finished quickly and needed something else to play while waiting forever for the Burning Crusade. There are customers out there not subscibed to WOW. Sadly, games like SWG and Auto Assault have not been as successful as Fantasy games so few publishers want to take a chance with another genre.
Why make it? If there is money to be made they will build it. Even 100,0000 people at 10 a month is real money.
Seriously the game industry makes more repeats than originals... because its safer, quicker, and easier.
All you need to do is change 1 thing and you just made a new game that someone may like when they didnt like the original.
Lotr is a fine pve game, personally i want something more, but I hope lotr does well since it helps all mmos when one succeeds.
Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7
And for all of you fanboys of WOW out there that just keep going on about how everything is just like WOW there is nothing new well guess what it is your precious little game that has done this to the genre so dont go flaming the rest of the games out there for having a go, It is amazing how WOW fans can say all the games that are supposedly just like WOW suck .. Well if they suck then so must WOW because that is just what they are like am i right?
In a perfect world a company could take four years and a few million dollars and create a fantastic game that appealed to the PVPers, the casual gamers, the hardcore raiders, the crafters and the socialites. Unfortunately most companies have proven that they can't do that before the publisher is kicking the game out the door. You either make the questing really good, the PvP really good or the crafting really good but most companies have to focus on a key area to get right or you end up with something that is lacking in all areas. Word of mouth is that LoTRs is polished and playable and fun. Everyone might not agree but that polish came from the focusing on the storyline instead of being able to PVP. Even still the Monster PvP section looks like it could be fun and I am sure it will get attention down the line.
Chances are the guys who did DAOC that are working on WAR will bring the PvP so I think it was a smart move for Turbine to focus on the story and the quests part. Especially with an IP as rich in lore as LoTRs.
Totally agree with this guy.
Also, anything that is called a WoW like game is actually getting one hell of an endorsement these days. The benchmark for new games was set by WoW and it takes hell of a lot to hit that mark.
What if I said your new car was just like a Porche with a few extra neat tricks?
I'm thinking you've never read LoTR. : )
C'mon now even in the heretical movies heads were catapulted!

It would have at least been smart if they had some kind of viable PvP in the game to build on at a later stage. Thats why WoW is such a strong game, but its also a massive potential weakness. WoW can cater to all types of player, but never to a hardcore degree (except raiding). The problem for WoW is there is little depth to the crafting, PvP, things like that, but they still have them there.
LotR was an epic book and film, which was about fullscale warfare and how a few people, and ultimately one person with a bit of help managed to change everything. There is no better setting for a PvP storyline and game, where an army, a group, some friends, or even one person can make a difference.
Im not saying the game is bad, or anything like that. Its just a shame they didn't see the potential in the market.
