Is it worth trying?

I am trying to find me a good break away game from fantasy, but unfortunately there are very slim pickins out there. I have been watching this game for a little bit now but like most games that are a few years old the population and games seem to be lacking quit a bit.

However this is a totally different type of game then most so I was wondering if its worth it to give it a shot? Is there still a lot of interest in this game? Is it worth the $15 a month subscription? Is there still a good population to actually have fun?

From what I have been reading and hearing is the Alliance is in pretty bad shape at the moment, though I would of went Alliance anyway it just gives me that extra boost to want to play because I like being the underdog. Just because the Axis has control now of a lot of things doesnt mean its over, it just means they have more to worry about.

Anyway looking forward to some input.

Thanks!

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.

and he will bring the others home.

I certainly find the game to be enjoyable. My one complaint is I wish that RDP would move a little faster but oh well. :p

It is worth it to me to pay the monthly subscription fee. You'll have to try it out and see if it is worth it to you. I play it for the ground combat and the anti-tank work. Other people play it for the naval game (which isn't very big at all). Then you have the aerial game which has an allure all of its own, but don't expect anything ground breaking at all in that regard either.

All told, find a good squad and you'll have a good time most of the time. Another trick is to avoid the official forums other than dev related posts just because there is a fair amount of hate mongering there by both sides, and that can tend to kill the mood to want to play the game.

I bought this game when it first came out - hated it despite playing horrible amounts of time on FPS'ers...  It's far in a way dated... Grab you a copy of BF2142, the same fill but with constant action.

Thanks JMP much appreciated, I was gonna try the free trial but not a big fan of giving a CC # for a free trial, kinda why I was asking about it.  Hell if it is only $10 to buy and I get 30 days to play then I might just give it a shot, hopefully see a few more opinions first though.

You can't compare WWIIOL to BF2142. They are two very different styles of games. If you've played both, you would understand this.

Isnt that a console game? I am looking for more interaction then a console game, more of a PC gamer then I am console.

I have played both but I do admit to having only played WW2 online when it first came out and it was laggy, LONG time waiting or going to fights, and by long I mean seriously long like hours and hours....  but I played the game total for about 30ish hours.

It doesn't take hours upon hours to join a fight now. You can hop into the game and be a part of a major offensive or defensive action in a matter of minutes if that. I haven't played the game for that long, only a year now, but to my understanding it is totally different compared to what it used to be.

Well for the sake of complete ignorance or making a bogus claim, i'll retract my statement but I can attest that the game was disasterous at launch and this is coming from a WW2 history buff and long time fps fan and mmo fan... lol

It was the worse launch in online history, but the rats have patched, fixed, upgraded, change about every 6 weeks for the last 6 years. It is a completely differnect game since the launch and is the only game to have been on my comps since June of 00 for the first iteration of beta. The rats support this to no end. Every 6 weeks we get new stuff, fix any old stuff. A new graphix engine is due soon. They built the ordance server..for STO..objects that persist. Mortars are next release due soon. CRS is a very small independent company and they work constantly. I figure I am playing for free and paying for the updates. It is well worth the time to play.

Good to know, I might try it again when the new graphics come out.

Interesting, I have heard this is a small company but hopefully it has grown in 5 years. Is it hard to get going if you have never played it before? Are the key maps changable? Really getting an interest in the game just trying to get a good idea of how things are or going to be.

    You can change keymappings.

It is easy to get into as far as being able to join people to do stuff. It takes some getting used to though when it comes to using the infantry weapons since you have to sight in on your target using the actual sights on the weapon itself, but that is also what makes the game fun.

If you're truly trying to get away from 'fantasy', WWIIOL probably isn't the game for you. With teleporters, magical pixie dust weapons and lack of historical accuracy it's almost as much a fantasy game as any other fantasy game on the market.

when he said "soon"  keep in mind its not the normal definition of "soon"

The new graphics engine has been in the "works "now for like 2 years along with TOE's and other stuff that was promised as "soon"

Staff has decreased in the 5 years not increased. All forum access is blocked unless you have a sub so no chance in reading up on the games progress or regress.  Air war............well it sucks now and I was a pilot.  Both sides need heavy bombers but instead they are getting re-skinned fighter vartiants of the same stuff.   Lots of pilots left and are playing Aces High especially the squad I am in.

I started playing in 2003 and it was great back then.  ver 1.18 iirc was the best ever.........lag was at a minimum and stutters almost non existant...........ever since then it went down hill.

Now.........the concept is great and at its peak it was a real fun game to play......but it just cant keep up and has just gone downhill.  If they dont keep the subs they have there in trouble.....BIG trouble.

No one should have to have a rig comparable the Jet propulsion Lab at NASA to play this game because bacially thats what it takes.

This guy is full of it. Don't listen to a guy with a female elf name when it comes to WW II combat sims. That for better or worse is what WWIIOL is, a MMO combat sim, not an rpg.

While I have other complaints, I can't understand why people complain about graphics with WWIIOL / BE.   You CAN"T have a massive 2+ KM sized visable battlefield and super graphics at the same time.  If you want good graphics you have to make it much smaller and/or do the fog thing.  Red Orchestra tries to do it and probably does the best job out there (UT2004 engine), but it's big tank maps always have sparce cover due to FPS reasons.  Or you stick to the other games with it's tanks fighting at 200-500m ranges or the lame fog effects.  The size was one of the things that attracted me to WWIIOL.

As for finding fights, much easier now due to game changes, but for me that actually took away some of the uniqueness that brought me to WWIIOL in the first place.  Certainly broke up lots of the squads.

But hey, give it a shot.  It's a legit company so I wouldn't worry about  a CC #, never had a problem with them.  Rather give it to them then EA or Sony :P

One thing though, you must have at least 1GB of system ram or it's not going run well.  Thing is a RAM pig.

1 Gig..............LOL..........try at least 2 gigs.  1 Gig was barely playable 1 year ago.   I got to be honest here I played from Oct of 2003 to June of 2006. In that time I went from a lowly Axis Gechwader group peon to the Axis  Country commander before I said I had enough.  Haulyou2 and ZZ were my superiors......I came thru the ranks with Badger and all the rest of the "good Ole boys". I I was privy to the "inside info" and signed a NDA.

    I LOVED THE GAME

But the game got lost........I quit before becoming DCOS due to the direction if the game.  Version 1.18 was the best ever and when para came in even better. ............after that is was down hill.

I admire the concept and vision of the game but I fear it wont make it as the staff is not there and the subs will slowly diminish as the die hards ...................well.................die off so to speak.

The vision is like no other but when only......"est" 500 people play its not good for business.

I wish the game was like it was 2003 again cause thats when the game had people.........thats when the game was fun.........thats when people wanted to play and get involved. The HC's now are nothing but a joke. Back then it was a job.....a satisfaction to be doing good for your side.  Now its the good of the few over the good of the many

I played retail a little bit, and 2 years ago i gave it another shot.

after getting shot from who knows where 20 times while getting used to the game, i was finally getting my 1st kill when the SOB logged out instantly to avoid the death. I flipped out over that & never went back..but it's nice to see people making posts about the game, still.

More promises of "soon"  that never arrive as expected.  So lets say that pigs fly and the "new" stuff  IS ready by Xmas of 07........that just means the engine is done........it dosent mean the game will take on a whole new look and performance by then.

The instant despawn was removed, there was a despawn timer last I played.

BMW66, dunno 1 GB ram worked for me no problem, I didn't have any HD thrashing.  But then I do keep my comp nice and clean so I mostly have that whole 1GB of ram to work with.  Not like some who have every piece of crap software they can download, running in the background and then complain about game (and any game in this case) performance.

No argument on the direction of the gameplay though.  Less and less of the huge battlefield got used and more and more it turned into a poor graphics with lag quake game.  Stuff that was acceptable/reasonable in a 2+KM battlefield doesn't cut it in 400m one.
