*sighs heavily*
So I really got into playing LOTRO in April. For the past couple of weeks, I havent been playing much. Just yesterday, I log in and look at my quest log. Got to kill 13 more spiders in the Old Forest. I am staring at the quest log thinking... "why?". The battle is going to consist of me going into the forest, clicking "1, 2, 3, CTRL-1", about 4 times per mob. Times 13 mobs. Times 2670 more quests to max level. I though bleh, and logged out.
I am not knocking the game at all. It is very well done, wonderfully polished in the LOTR lore. But, I think I am just bored with this iteration of the genre. I WANT to like LOTRO, WANT to enjoy playing it and leveling, but that above reality of the game just being a series of clicks makes me not want to play.
I like MMOs, but tried just about every one of the ones listed here. WoW and SWG held me the longest. With SWG, I loved it until the Jedi Revamp. After the hologrind nightmare, the thought of going through the "village" was the last straw. It was timed in such a manner that I couldnt help but think it was only to ensure monthly payments from me. WoW was released. I came and went a few times, but stuck with it for the most part until TBC. I just didnt see the point to playing any longer.
I even went back to MUDs. I just tried one, but thought something was "off". Then I found you had to "buy" items in order to advance. Now, for me, there is just something about "paying" for a MUD. Wont do it. Maybe I will donate, but I wont be forced to pay to advance in the game.
I also bought a Wii, Nintendo DS, played the games, but missed the MMO feel. I found myself thinking "If only I could make some better armor" when playing zelda.
So now what? Will the new upcoming MMOs be that different? Will one of them make me want to log in each night after work and the youngens are in bed? Or is it that I am just getting older and getting more discriminating in my wants of a game?
Come on MMO Devs.... Impress us already! We are offering you some good monthly residuals, now it is your job to create something to earn them from us!
Maybe I will give LOTRO another shot next week after I break from it for a while. <shrugs>

Wait for the next big thing...
Personally I'm waiting for games like Aion, Tabula Rasa, Huxley, Gods and Heroes, Ragnarok Online 2 to come out...
Again it is not a bad paradigm; it's just been done to death. It's time for someone to break the mold in a good way.

@Greslore: I feel exact the same, i think i'am really getting tired of the 1,2,3 clicking and go killing 10 mobs and return to the quest giver, but i don't want to realize it, because i love playing mmo's.
The past year i've been jumping from one mmo to another, trying so many that i almost don't remember them all, wasted to much money too(but thats another story).
So for me, i hope either Age of conan or darkfall will do something about this, but of course i have no idea before i get my hands on the games.
I find that old task (not Quest) system in terms of killing ten boars at level 10 and then 26 boars at level 20 to be mindless. I need a more sophisticated game with more spice of travel, exploration, challenge, and an unpredictable environment.
Believe it or not, Vanguard has a fairly sophisticated Quest system. The game also distinguishes between "tasks" such as killing ten boars and Quests. I like that. I understand only a few games do that.
I think a lot of people feel the same way as you, mmorpg now a days always seem to lock you in place and auto attack has ruined all the interactivity so its not even much of a game than a movie..
Granados espada had it sooo close, you aim spells, you control 3 guys at once so its fast paced, it looks great, however the lack of enemies and challenge sort of ruins it. But yes it is possible to have something fast paced that actually makes your heart race like diablo 2 did, however theres nothing out now with those qualities. I actually doubt age of conan will fix this as well, its got a good combat system and all that however it seems so slow paced your gonna need to be playing tetris in the background just to give you something to do in between sword strikes.
I think im currently waiting on mythos hoping it fullfills my need for speed, and some of those run and gun mmorpg look exciting hopefully i wont mind killing 500 boars, hopefully you find something you can enjoy though.
To the OP:
I feel your pain unfortunately =(
Not much to do personally until a new good sandbox mmo comes out. Cant say any are on the horizon though at the moment
Till then ill enjoy Saga of Ryzom.
I need a game that lets me level solely by meaningful and competitive pvp and at the same rate I could if I was doing pure pve. That will be the game that earns my money and attention.
it used to be "you cant kill other people playing games like zelda but in our mmorpg you can make clans and teams and kill as many people as you want" thats why the mmorpg market went so big and there was barely ever any complaints at all
There are some interesting upcoming MMO games with different ideas, but as of now it's just hard to say too much without experiencing them at all.
There are the casual games you find online as well, if you have tried any of them. If not, stick to your consoles for now: innovation is definitely happening in games there.
Yeap... a pleasant surprise would be good.
That made me smile.
I was one of the people that pre-ordered the Collecto's Edition for 75 Dollars, then on the last day of Beta I thought it would be best I didn't get it. Now I absolutely hate the game. Saved myself 75 Dollars.
Welcome to the Club Greslore !
I have the sad news to tell you that our membership is growing faster day after day. Or should I say click after click. The varied pretty eye candy no longer hides the fact that basically this is the exact same thing we did in the last handfull of games we played. We dive into the newest game and fly through character creation because customization is not there. Then into the fray we jump. Ready to go out and slay rats and snakes that magically carry for us the new weapons so we may expand our territory. But in the back of the mind we feel such a sense of Deja Vu. Some members complain that they suddenly think they loaded the wrong game it is so familiar. The hopes and dreams of this club is that some new company or some new team combo will come along and destroy us by giving us something different. But we fear that they are too afraid to try something new and will continue to cater to the new breed of "I don't want towork for it I want it givin to me" players. There are no dues for membership. We hold no meetings. We even gave up keeping track of the numbers so you do not get a special membership card. Yes thats right! We have learned from the game companies , we don't care about your status. More will come to replace you.
Sorry I had to do something farcical or silently weep. I sit down at the computer and making the desicion on what game to play now is like when I go out and have to decide if it is my Orange County Choppers or my West Coast Choppers cap I am going to wear. For me I have a release valve. The weather is nice the snow is gone and I have the mountain bike and the beaches softly calling me.
Best of luck finding something , anything, to fill your entertainment needs.
Heres to hoping the next iteration of MMO's brings back that old feelin' again
cheers!

The solution would be a storyline that accounts for the disconnectes. I am not saying that's an easy solution, but it would keep the game a little more interesting. Additionally, the rise of the boar killing has gone hand in hand with the reduced popularity (or availabiliy, mainstream appeal, poor implementation, etc) of sandbox games. A sandbox style game doesn't seem to suffer as badly (in my experience) however, it has some limitations it seems. I think a sandbox game with compelling content would be the way to go.
just my opinions though.

Do what I do, while we are waiting new games to come out (which in my case is: Overlord, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Quake wars, Age of Conan, Left 4 Dead, Hellgate London, Tabula Rasa, Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising,Warhammer Online).
First preseason shooter have come a long way in the last view years, I recommend Battlefield 2142.
Single Player RPG: Jade Empire is very good.
So is LEGO Star Wars II. But it plays very weird on the PC. Its great on the game boy.
Beta Test: Try to get in as a tester, I’m testing Tabula Rasa at the moment.
