One thing ive noticed now im in my mid 20s im seeing less and less loremasters, wheras earlier on in the game there seemed quite a few. Hunter is probably the most popular but there arent many dwarven hunters around for some reason. Beginning to see more burglars being rolled in the noob areas.
unfortinutely the high areas are populated mostly by hunters, champs, because those are your dps classes. Guardians/minstrels, which must group together to survive, are not as common because of the low dps, it takes a lot longer to kill things. However, give me group full of guardians/minstrels/burglars/captians over a champ/hunter group anyday
DPS classes like the previous poster said are the most popular by far however as a 31 minstrel I solo yellows and oranges easily, same for my friend who is a 37 guardian. I play pretty much a 60% solo 40% group style. I only group for group quests and can solo any mob a similar level hunter/champ can solo. Reminds me of my smite cleric in early DAOC, sort of a battle mage in a way. Try different classes and find the one you like the best. If you like to group mostly go minstrel or guardian and you can get groups more easily because there are not a s many.
Burglar is an excellent choice and is also popular in groups and they are fun as heck to play and quite different from any other class in other MMORPGs. I won't even try to describe their play style but they can be a surprisingly good tank in a pinch. I think LMs are underated, I love having one in a group for debuffing/ crowd control. As I said though try different ones, I even enjoy guardian and I have always hated playing a tank.
What server are you guys playing on? On Brandywine, the newbie areas are overflowing with captains, and talking with some higher levels, they say captains have a hard time finding groups because there are so many. Its rather disheartening for an up-and-coming captain, but none of the other classes appeal to me like captain does.

My main is a lvl 32 Minstrel as well and as stated earlier is easy to solo 4 lvls higher as long as u can pull 1 at a time. It's also very easy for me to find a fellowship when i need one. My first toon was a Loremaster but they just cant take DPS. I stopped playing him at lvl 15 because it was costing too much in armor repairs On Landroval I don't see too many Captains in the Fellowships I've joined. Mostly Champions and Hunters.
I am playing a lore-master and just hit lvl 20 this morning. The leveling is slow, I am hoping that this toon will become powerful at high levels. Still having fun anyway. Have not tryed a captain or burgler yet.
Well, to break the trend so far: Loremaster is the most fun class so far for me, with burglar a close second. Both chars are in thier 30s, both are fantastic in teams and pretty decent solo.
Best way forward though is just to play what you like, the game is still young and theres plenty of time to test what you like.

Proving that Brandywine is full of Noobs (Gladden Rulez!)
No, but seriously, on my server it seems to be Champs on top ( by far), then Hunters....
After that sort of a toss up between Guardians, Captains and Minstrels...
Burglers next and Loremasters so far back I can't recall the last time I've grouped with one..(only has happened 2 times so far)

I origionally started as LM, loved it but cost to much in armor like the other poster said, they're not welcome in groups because with the current game mechanics a LM draws an insance amount of argo once they start debuffing and crowd control so people don't like to play with them. I tried out minstrel and like it to solo, but hate group play b/c your relegated to a healer only status. Right now i'm a guardian and loving it, I can solo when I choose and once you put in <X lvl guardian for X group quest> you'll be over saturated with pm's beging for you to join.
Once I hit 30 with the guardian I will try out burglar because its an interesting class from what I've seen. The main benefit with burglar is that they can activate the fellowship abilities which cna utterly destory an enemy in no time at all. They are also a tank as well because of thier uber dodge. Yet at higher levles you don't see them, and I don't really understand that.

Come over to Silverlode, we have a massive shortage of Captains (that can play at any rate) and even fewer Loremasters it seems. Both are excellent in a group and I would love to gorup with them more often. As a minstrel both make my life easier in different ways.

There are few dwarven hunters because the primary trait for a hunter is "agility', and dwarves have the poorest agility of any race in LOTRO.

I decided to re try Lore Master this afternoon, it is definitely a challenging class to play but after adjusting my tactics a bit I am really starting to like him.

This could be because captains are going to get buffed up in the next update.
My feelings and what I have noticed is...
Most popular ----------------->Least popular
Hunter/Champion
Guardian
Captain
Minstrel
Burgler
Loremaster
But this is an observation on Brandywine, and obviously can be flawed.
or a better way to put it
Hunter/Champion
and all the other classes.

I have two characters right now. I have a loremaster that gets killed all the time because I cannot find any beginning groups to complete one of the intro quest at Thorin's gate. The loremaster is fun to play but hard. I also have a burglar on another server and that class is really fun and I can do any quest solo so far. It is still hard when attacked by more than one mob but I survive most of the time. I want to try a champion and I would also like to try a Captain sometime.
