Brand spanking new to SWG..and enjoying it!!

LonewolfLonewolf Member UncommonPosts: 252

I am a veteran of the MMORPG world, you could say thats a cliche, but it is the best way to describe myself, I was originally in the beta for SWG, thought it was utter tripe and threw it in the bin never to be opened

Well here I am yeaaaaaars later and the game has dramatically improved! Just wanted to say first MMORPG in a long time that actually had me wanting to push further and further

One question I have, I am currently playing a Jedi and enjoying it, but worried the entire server is full of them, was wondering what classes were in a minority or what would be a good class to enjoy?

I am currently playing on Europe - Farstar as I am from England, called Cursed ingame, so send me a tell if you want to help me out or send me lots of cash!!

Thanks!!

If you enjoy Jedi, stick with it :)  I'm not sure what it's like on your server, but Jedi aren't the most common profession around on Chilastra.

Yeah good idea think I will stick with it then

How does grouping and such work in SWG anyway all the professions are so new to me, I am quite excited at how unknowledgeable I am of it all
  • TorakTorak Member Posts: 4,905

    Yeah, Jedi are a nuisence.

One thing I don't like and never liked about SWG in any form, was the fact that a player could become a Jedi. Even before NGE, the game was infested with them. They really have no place in the timeline. I play a smuggler now, he works out pretty well. Personally I don't know what the rarer classes are as I just returned myself. I see a lot of Commandos and Bounty Hunters. Spy's were popular also for awhile. Everyone seems to have an Entertainer or Trader alt also now days. I don't think any of the classes are a really bad choice, not like the old days when half the professions were jacked up.

Active pilots are not very common if you are looking for something really different. JTL has been pretty neglected over the years and nothing new has been introduced to space since its launch so its not very active, hopefully Chap 8 changes that as space is really almost a game onto itself. You will need a joystick though, I wouldn't try with the keyboard / mouse setup but space is awesome and I'm not to crazy about the "ground wars" portion. (in any of its forms especially when it was grind based and all everyone did was kill Bols 24/7)

I'm on Farstar also, drop me a PM if you are looking for a PA.

Thanks Torak, I will drop you a PM if I need any pointers ingame thanks alot

Maybe when I am a little higher in lvls I will start looking for a guild to join

Did the player cities idea ever make it into the real game on SWG?

Yes, player cities came into the game a few months after launch.  At the moment though until the housing purge, all servers are capped on cities so no new ones can be made.

LoL, well don't ask for pointers....I'm just as clueless as you. I just returned myself. It doesn't help that SOE does major revisions on a regular basis.

There's always something about Galaxies. Today, I logged in in my lunch hour, to see that at least 10 of my friends have returned. You leave the game, but itching to come back, as most seem to do.

Beast Master has injected some new life and with the house purge soon, I am sure our fantastic communities will expand even further. The future is bright

Talk about coming late to the party.

OP, you're just coming in now to SWG? And according to you, you didn't like pre-nge but you love it now? Mind boggling, simply, mind boggling. Go figure.

Oh, btw, you don't have to worry about the servers being full of Jedis, this is the least of your problems.  Not only aren't there many Jedi's runing around, there's NO ONE running around, period!  This game's servers are ghost towns. The npc's themselves have hightailed it out too.

For a guy who is a self described MMO Vet, you sure don't know much about the current games or at least on this game anyway.  Gamers and vets all know servers in Galaxies are mostly empty and only a tiny amount of players actually enjoy this PS, X-Box game. All 100 of them.

But like they say, "you live and learn."

Glad you are enjoying the game. Don't listen to the trolls who tell you that there is no reason to like it. I played from day 1 and quit after the NGE was introduced but have just recently come back. I approached it as a new game in a familiar setting and I am have fun with it as well.

You really should find a good guild because that makes the game all the more enjoyable.

As for "the itch", you are absolutely right. I have been wanting to try the game again even though the last time I tried it (April 2006 for 1 month) I didn't like it. I finally broke down and resubbed and I think I am going to stick around for awhile.

Is the game as full as it once was? No. Is it empty and dying? No.

I think Nancy McIntre was correct when she commented on "too much reading".  :P

This person "sololololococo" is a fool.  There are plenty of people running around on a few servers.  Not all servers are full yet you can easily create a character on one of the good ones and have no issue finding someone to play with.

The Storyline event perks was the last act of desperation to get players back in this game.  I think it will do more good in the long run the BM will.

Too bad the game play in the "nge" version of SWG is terrible and much worse then any "official" live version.  If you like the current SWG you would have loved the "CU" version.  Pre-cu was even better with amazing dynamics.  Problem is, which the stroyline events should fix, that SWG has always suffered from very poor content development.

p.s. keep in mind, BETA is *NEVER* supposed to be the finished product.  I see kiddies bragging and totting around all the games they've "beta'd" on a regular basis then using a bug or single pre-launch experiance as if it accurately portrays the game.

Is it really that important?  Maybe he (or anyone else that's just starting fresh) might have liked the CU, but it's rather irrelivent now since it's been gone for nearly 2 years.

I'm still really trying to understand why it's such an issue when people say that they enjoy the game, especially when the people usually had nothing to do with the game pre-nge.  It's apparantly so much an issue to some that they'll cross the bridge from the Vet vent forum to put their 2c in.

Obraik, you do not make any sense. Your spin reminds of someone trying to defend Scientology.

I have upmost confidence that you are completely out of touch with "it".  Too bad.

And apparently it's NOT irrelevant of liking so many of the features which were removed for the "nge" since the current developers of SWG are attempting to bring as many of those said features back.  Come on, get with it.

Trying to ignore the hijack of the thread about whose opinion is more valid, I'll try to get back to the OP's thoughts.

Welcome back...  I played since launch, quit for 12 months post NGE (a overwhelming game revamp) and rejoined in January.  I am enjoying the game immensely.

I don't know how populated the Europe severs are, but I can tell you Starsider has a very good sized population, an active GCW, some good player event organizers, a big RP population (if that floats your boat) and one of the more active JTL Pilot populations also.

If you ever feel up to making an alt, give Starsider a shot.  (We also get a LOT, especially recently, of people switching servers and coming over to SS.)

    Aaden Monserrat - Elder Jedi
    Starsider - <DFC> - Dark Force Clan

I'm a "veteran" player that dabbled in Galaxies on/off. I always liked the game but was disappointed for the same reasons as everyone else. I recently noticed the two week trial and decided to break my "never again mandate" and give it another try.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the game in it's current state and I'm actually having fun again. I would imagine any new player to the game will be interested right off, however us veteran players have to take things at face value. It simply is not the same game it was, however it still has many of the nice features like housing, etc. I rolled a brand new Smuggler on Bria to get a fresh start even though I have one on Corbantis who is wealthy. I see quite a few players on Bria, so contrary to popular commentary, the game is not dead.

This is a fun game again, so I hope it continues to get some traction.

Same as the OP I too played this game in Beta and thought it was total crap so I never even played to the end of the Beta. I'm currently patching the game for the 14 day trial to give it another shot. I've decided to NOT listen to all the SoE hate mongers and give the new SWG a shot mainly due to positive threads like this one that seem to be more frequent these days. I'll maybe post again after playing a few days to let you all know what I think. All my hopes........

I think I am willing to give SWG another try and take my own advice. Go into a game not expecting what you enjoyed from another game...but, take it as a new experience and see what happens.

I still have my character on Naritus but am probably going to do what the above poster did...roll another character and start over.

Any Naritus people here? Is that server empty? Should I just go Bria?

    Welcome back to the game!

I have to say this, SOE has got it down to make you come back. I myself recently got access to the 14 day trial with my Original Account. Alot has changed since I left at the time of the Combat Upgrade and not the NGE system. I was a very disappointed camper when CU was released and decide to bail the SWG Universe and jump on the WoW Bandwagon in Nov 2004.

When I left the SWG I was a Pre-Publish 9 Jedi and unlocked it with 29 Professions and played when most every veteran loved the game. I found myself coming back to the game with alot of awards and a new SWG gameplay (I assume this is the NGE system). As the old saying goes (You must unlearn what you have learned, or something like that).

Anyways to get to the point, I didnt think I was going to even last 2 days playing the 14 Day Trial and now I am hooked back into SWG. I dont know if its because of nostalgia or the SWG itself. I am going to ride this new SWG out and see where it goes from here. I am enjoying myself and found out a few of my old buddies from the hay days are back as well. Being a CL64 Elder is new to me and gimped (LOL) compared to most players out there now, but I have been grinding quests which seem to give alot of XP to get closer to CL90.

I played since launch then stopped for about 2 years now around when the NGE hit (though I did lessen somewhat after the CU).  I miss the whole crafting experience which I still don't know if there's any MMO that has gotten something close.  I think the beast mastery thing got me to trying it again too since I had 2 MCH and 1 MBE and I miss my pets.  It's definitely a different game except for space which I sometimes will keep doing just to get back to something familiar again.  It's a little challenge to refigure out what everything means (buffs wise), but I think I might extend my 1 month resubscription.  I think having my main on Starsider which still seems populated helps.

I do see alot of Jedi, but then again I saw alot when they moved it to the village quest instead of the holo grind (well even with holo grind after they gave everyone a holo there was quite a bit).  I'm not sure how to tell what profession other people are so not sure about how many of the others there are.  I have a medic and not seeing too many of those I don't think since the healing is alot more limited than it was.  I'm also gonna try out a trader, spy, officer, and commando.  I get a lot of looks at my cu pa mount for some reason and will some day reincarnate the rest of my non-mount animals I hope.  I'm glad they allow 2 characters per server since that was my only reason for even wanting to try to get a jedi.

I'm currently subscribed to 3 MMOs and eventually something is gonna have to give.

    SWG - Starsider (retired?)
    EQ2 - Oasis
    LotRO - Vilya

I just started playing a couple of days ago myself. When the game first game out, I was heavily invested into DAoC. I tried SWG for a couple hours and left lol.  Anyway, fast forward to today. I've been in mmo limbo for a bit; tried most that have come out but nothing really grabbed me.  I started a Jedi the other day, and I AM HAVING A BLAST.  I've stayed up till 4 am on work noghts for 2 nights straight, and I haven't done that since my DAoC days.  The CU and NGE mean nothing to me because I wasn't around when thye happened, therefore they have no bearing on my gameplay or experience.  I've got a couple buddies I'm in the process of recruiting over; this feels like a nice, polished game, good quests, etc.  I just may have found a new mmo to play!
