How to get a crew?

Hi there, I was wondering how i am able to get a crew? I mean are crews npc's or are they real players? Also do i need a crew to level my sailing to get a better ship. Thnx for any help (I hope I didn't break anything posting here, was just a little confused on these subjects)

    A ships crew are real players which can be invited by clicking on the tab button to release the mouse and then selecting the player you wish to invite by clicking the crew button. hope this helps

    you know.. i can kind of understand the reason why ships are crewed by all live players. for one it would prevent  over 1000 pirate ships from floating around on each server. and it creates interdependency that is part of the overall lifeblood of an MMO. But........ there is a thing as too much interdependency. especially in this games setting. say your part of a crew on a ship who's captain hasn't logged in for a week or so. or say your captain or another couple members of your crew want to log off for a while, but you want to continue playing. i'm sure these are going to be minor problems if you land a spot on a dedicated crew. but it's enough to keep me away from the game. personally i don't like only being able to play a game when another player dictates when and where i shall be able to.

    In this game a crew is a group or party. You aren't stuck with the one.
