What exactly is there to do?

I have been debating on wether or not to buy this game.  I have been playing City of Heroes for the past year and I am in need of a new game.  I have read a lot about LOTRO but i am still a little confused.  When you first start out do you have to just sit and kill everything you see to level up before you can do anything or right away can you start crafting and all that other stuff?  Also is there a permanent place for you person like a house or maybe a castle like place where all players can stay and keep his/her items?

All info is appreciated

Lotro has no player housing at present.  You can store itesm in a bank if u wish.

Broken? Well maybe. But pointless? Heck no.

Try thinking ahead. When they fix it you will most likley need to craft MORE then you do know to reach max level. So crafting as it is, and getting to max level before they fix it is pretty smart IMO.

I'd say the crafting system is better than COH's as but the housing system is about the same.

    How do you mean "broken"?

I took up woodworking. I want to create a bow.. I gather the resources (not at all difficult to find - an d there are a couple sweet-spots I found where they're more than abundant), go to the proper station, create whatever components I need... and I make the bow.

I don't understand what's broken or "sparse" about it...?

broken in the sense that it does not work. it cost much much more to rise it than to profit from it. Certain crafting professions are not broken, but they are the excpetion not the rule.

take metalworking for example. the only thing you can do at the very start is heavy armour... that nobody can use until level 15... so until then what you do with all that bronze?

it is not broken in the sense it does not work. mechanically it works fine.

as for what to do, questing questing and questing. but damn it is fun. no killing things , ie, grinding, is not gonna work here :D
