Trying to get a feel for the "average" video card

TalinguardTalinguard Member UncommonPosts: 676
PLEASE just take a sec to answer the poll, THANK YOU!!!

I'm really just trying to get a feel for the average MMO'ers video card, assuming that most of you that come here are gammers that play MMO's

If you click on either of the "not listed here" options please post with what kind of card you have and what you choose in the poll.....

Feel free to give me a couple of bumps...I would like to get at least 50 responses

Thanks!!

I want to get a new HD2900, but I heard the drivers need some more development, its noisy fan, and creates alot of heat.

    I was about to upgrade from my current system Ath3500+, 6800gt, 1ram to a C2D 2.4ghz  ($226) and 8800gts, but.......

I just saw an anouncement  that the Quad core 2.4ghz would be taking a price drop from ~$530 to $266 on July 22.  I will wait till then and upgrade

I just picked up a pair of MSI NX7600GT Diamond video cards that are running in an SLI configuration. It's a beautiful thing.

I know this is going to come across as insulting, but why would you do that?  If you had a 7600 and added on later it might make a little sense....but Newegg lists that card at $178.  Even if you scored both for $300 you could have bought a single 8800gts, had DX10 compatibility and your video would be 2-10 times faster depending on the situation.

    Agreed!

SLI and Crossfire really are not worth it for 99% of the consumers.  More often than not you are better off ebaying your old card and putting the money towards a single new card.

The only exception is if you have more money than god and can afford to get two of the highest performing cards.

BTW he could have got an 8800 GTS 640 for $309 after mir (shipped free).

Maybe it is not too late to return them. =)

There is no truly average card, as each month the average goes up one more step.
For a good indications of what the current options are, take a look a the guides on the Toms Hardware website.

According to that chart submitted from Valve, the average computer user playing their games uses technology that is 2 or sometimes 3 generations back. I'd say that's a clear indication that most people are not using higher end or even recent GPUs.

People also sometimes don't even know what they are getting. A friend of mine had a card die on him that was an nVidia 6800. He switched to a 7600, thinking that "because it is a higher number" it's a better card. When he found out he had actually sort of downgraded (because the 7600 is a "moderate" card and the 6800 is a "performance" card) he felt ripped off... but if he hadn't been told, he'd never have known.

NewEgg says my order shipped today, so this weekend I'll be replacing my 7800GT with a new 8800GTS.

I couldn't justify the more expensive 8800GTX, especially when my 7800GT still runs most of my games beautifully.
