One of the classics. So you'll get the classic answer - Take the class that appeals to you most, every class is fun in its own way. And for the most DPS. Champion and Hunter are the only two dps classes, ranged and melee, with obvious roles.

Make a random char, get it to level 10, and play a monster.

I play a hunter in game and i can tell you this. Hunters are your nukers in the game. We deal alot of dps and i find them fun to play. If you want melee dps then go with a champion. For range stick with a hunter.

I'm a Champion ingame, and I still think it's lots of fun. I don't understand why you say or or, because doing DPS doesn't reduce the ingame fun.

You probably don't care, but champs and hunters are so unbelievably overpopulated it hurts. The worlds are full of wanna-be Legolas and wanna-be Aragorns. I get tells from 4 or 5 man "champ-only" or "hunter-only" groups pretty often looking desperatly for core classes (I'm playing a minstrel)... This would drive me away from playing those classes any day... Burglar is a fun class to, or captain... Lore-Masters tend to be hard in soloplay but are great group characters and guardians are classic tanks with very fun abilities...

Well that's a bit overly harsh, don't you think?

Hunter and Champion are two of the available classes in the game and there are certainly going to be people who enjoy that style of play - regardless of how powerful they are. I, for one, play a Hunter, but that's because I've always enjoyed ranged classes... being able to draw a mob away from other aggro so you can fight it in a safer spot is just one of many reasons. In FFXI, I always look forward to being puller in a party as such.  I, by no means, model myself after Legolas. I had no idea which classes are "over-powered" when I chose it, I just chose the one I traditionally enjoy playing.

I'm sure your comments are justified in some cases - but don't generalize an entire cross-section of players over it.

Sure there are people who like to play these classes out of their own simple liking...

But, the massive overpopulation of hunters and champs, and I'm talking about two or three times more players, speaks volumes. I don't believe that there are so many genuine non-magic-ranged damage players out there.

It's like the amount of Elves in the game. There are a rough 40 to 50% elves when I wander through the lands. It correlates directly, so the largest fraction would be Elven hunters.

Why is that? Out of liking for ranged classes and Elven mythology? No, it's because "OMG I'm LEGGOLASZ LOLZ SO COOOL; DUUUUDE". Its the reason why movie spin-off games sell so well even if they are complete crap, like the Harry Potter franchise games, or the Lord of the Rings actionesque adventure games.

While I can tolerate (though I will probably never understand or accept) this, I'm also very sure a small minority of players actually chooses the Elven Hunter out of the urge to create a fitting character - and I play on an RP realm.

I myself spent a fair time of thinking about what character I wanted to make, so I created a minstrel from dale, gave him a small little backround story (not much actually) and let him be something like "your next best travelling bard".

If you ask elven hunters/champions, they either 1) have not clue about why they are actually there and where they came from or 2)are all born in the first age, have fought in numerous battles (of which they cannot remember one), travelled all lands (of which they cannot tell you the location if you ask for a specific one) and are stemming from a major hub of Elven culture. Strange things arise from this, like a 8000 year old Moriquendi Elven Hunter who was born in Imladris (?) and travelled through Gondor in his youth (?)...

So NO, I'm not requesting everyone to know Tolkien Lore perfectly. But if I go on an RP realm and I KNOW; that I have no clue about Tolkien lore, AND I have the burning urge to create an elven hunter, for manwes sake, why can't he be a young elf? Many elves had short lives, even famous ones like Maeglin or Luthien - but no, everyone has to be Glorfindel or Galadriel, Feanor or Elrond. *sigh* That's why I stopped to expect anything remotely related to believable roleplaying from Elven hunters, and I've barely met one who didn't fit in my  sooooo made-up cliches...

Fair enough - and a very well presented post. You're certainly passionate about it - without being condescending, or full of it - and that's very cool, in my book.

Like I said.. I don't deny that there are players out there who want to be Legolas or whatever.. I'm grateful that Turbine apparently put name filters in place to prevent the 10,001 mutations on the common movie names from cropping up (one thing I was expecting when I started, but have yet to see).. but I'm sure they'd be out there if there weren't. I'm sure those folks wouldn't be difficult to spot. I'm just speaking up for those of us who chose the class because we enjoy the play style. Representin', yo'...

As for the lore and history.. I'll be honest.. I'm not that well steeped in it. It's been forever since I last read any of the books and, well, the movies don't really delve into the lore *that* much... So I'd have some catching up to do before I'd attempt to RP a genuine Middle Earth character. All that can come in time - especially if there's a lot of good RP'ing to be found.

As for being famous Elves... I've always wanted to be a Keebler Elf, myself... >.>

    Well , I play a guardian , currently lvl 31 and I m having lots of fun.

Being the character that leads the battle, jumping into groups of 3-4 elites , drawing their aggro , while u hope minstrel and other support classes do their job is pretty exciting for me.

Its also funny to watch all those Legolas wannabes thinking they are demi - gods run like lil girls cause they cant handle the aggro they get when they just nuke nuke nuke , its always a good laugh watching them shout "taunt , taunt !!" while I type /smoke

I guess I am one of the few, I play a Burglar and love every minute of playtime. Like every MMO I have played its been my character; the roguish, scrapper archetype. I understand the game defines the burglar as a debuffer class but we can DPS too. We can help swing the tide of a battle...at least in the realm of elites. Other classes can as well but burgs have that greater chance.

We may not be the best DPS class but we hold our own. There are many areas of the world we can access while others have to fight through just to see. We can stealthy walk amongst elites, pick a pocket here, and one of my favorite powers of all time....the heal, Mischievous Gleel! When I first discovered that I had a self heal I was in love. Its not a huge heal buff but its enough to help me sustain longer fights and increases my survivability. Burgs I find....like in most other MMOs have the best chance of surviving fights, due to all the outs we have. Evading, vanishing, and the varying stun capabilities we have. I enjoy this class and recommend it. And like posted above.....not as many of us as there are hunters and champs.

Play what you most have fun with.  Champion = good melee AOE/single target DPS; hunter = great ranged single target damage;  burglars = good single target DPS with alot of extra valuable tricks

Hunters are a popular class and there alot.  I see from my view as many guardians as I do champions on my server.  I have an elf hunter and champion and a dwarf minstrel.  Been playing elves since way before I knew who Legolas was.  Dont worry about the RPers.  I play what I want to play and have the utmost respect for other players to do that same.

There is always going to be inbalance in the population of classes, especially in healers, until developers make healers more fun.  That usually equates to more dps in these types of games and/or a better blend of the support role.  Vanguard was on the right track with their healer classes.  They were above norm and one could actually go out and dps and not have to press heal heal heal.    LOTR did a good thing in giving the non healer classes a means to heal.  I think it is underpowered.  A little more power to those heals then the healer classes could throw out some DPS for a few more seconds instead of having to heal heal heal.

Triston Master Carbine/Master Swords (SWG Eclipse)
    Triston 29 Warden (EQ2 Permafrost)
    Weland 70 Hunter (WoW Hellscream)
    Suidan 36 Cleric (Vanguard Flamehammer)
    Suidan 50 Champion (LOTR Gladden)

All the characters are fun for someone. I play a hunter cause i like the class not cause i am a legolas wannabee. I also enjoyed playing a guardian in closed beta. Just for me hunter is more exciting. Any hunter who just nukes nukes nukes isn't playing his class right. As a hunter i pull the monster to the trap i lay, trap snares the mob for the guardian to take aggro. I then poor on dps to kill it. I also do not run from a fight. I stand with my fellowship. The only times i have ran in a fellowhip is when everyone else has been defeated.

In most causes i am the first to be defeated. But i stand my ground. Yes hunters are popular as are champs. But i do not believe that everyone who plays a hunter is a legolas wannabee. Or all who play champs are a aragorn wannabee. Well not on my server. I play on elendilmir. Of course every server has it's asshats who want to play the uber character so they can be the greatest. I do not believe that any character in the game is uber. I know for a fact the hunter is not one. If you play it right in a good fellowship and do your job the way it is ment to be done then your playing it right. If you think you can sit back and oneshot or DPS a mob to death before it touches you then your not playing it right. Just my opinion.
