That is one of the many things the Devs at EQII are leaveing in the dark, but for SOE's last 2 games they have not had an open beta(Planetside,SWG). Hope that helps.

yeah that helps a bit but did EQ1 have open beta? i started playing it like right after ruins of kunark came out so i don't know of anything before hand. ho well if i get into beta great if not oh well i will just have to buy the game :)

I highly doubt that EQ2 will have an open beta. Most of SOE's games dont go into open beta, so you have to try to catch the beta right when it comes out.

I don't know if everuqest 2 will have an open beta but I don't get why everyone says planeyside didn't have an open beta. If you signed up for planetside beta you got in the beta in the last phase of the beta, so that means it had an open beta. EQ2 might have an open beta because its last 2 PC games had an open beta.

i will post it here when i find it again. (stay tuned :p)

Yes, all those that applied for Planetside beta did get in.  But, that does not mean that it was an open beta.  You had to fill out the application. You still had to get the beta invite.  You couldnt just go to the SOE website and download the client and go directly into the beta of Planetside.  Being able to do that constitutes an "open beta".  It could be that they did not get a huge Planetside beta request and they were just approving all that met computer specs.

So Planetside did not have and open beta and neither did SWG.  I am assuming that EQ2 will not have an open beta either, based upon prior games.

Really PSO was kinda "open," as you could download it from Fileplanet with a subscription. If EQ2 had something like that, I'd probably get a one month subscription just to download it, as I bet many others would as well. As for open betas, sometimes it is a "must" to have one to see how the servers will work with more people playing on them, and I think its a great idea (plus I really want EQ2 beta...). image

They say they have tens of thousands of applicants plus they are giving away 10k free beta spots from the july pc gamer.  So knowing all that I would think they have more than enough people to choose from without having to run an open phase.

As one of the most anticipated MMORPGs to date, I'm pessimistic on an open beta. We'll be lucky to get into a closed beta, even with SOE saying the beta will be the biggest things since EQ1.

If they don't have an open beta for EQ2 then it will have the same stability problems as SWG did early on... ie. servers crashing all over the place for the first month, I was so pissed off I nearly cancelled my SWG account right away, I wanted to play the game! Not look at the server loading screen!  SOE is just cheap, and it shows in the crappy quality of their games.

you dont really need an open beta with 100k+ beta applicants and 10k from pc gamer.  Thats a ton of tester potential and they should be able to load test a server setup.  The problem for release though is registration servers I would think because you have so many trying to go through that process all at once.

I may be pessimistic about open beta, but I'm optimistic and hoping SOE is smart enough from the SWG launch to make it a good show with servers capable of handling the onslaught of registrations likely to happen within the first weeks of launch.

I've not seen an official subscription price yet; however, it will probably be higher than other MMORPGS so I'm expecting RELIABILITY.image

Yeah, I agree 100%. SOE needs to wise up and get their games right before release. I have big expectations and I hope I'm not too disappointed. ::=^*::
