Hey everybody. I wanted to start this topic because most of the good gfx games comming out now suck horribly. Not saying everquest 2 will be bad, but its a possibility. I personally think that old gfx give a game its originality (everquest gfx). Yeah the gfx suck, but its fun.
Games that sucked.
Horizons
Lineage 2
Final Fantasy XI (i like it, most people hate it)
Star wars galaxies.
Saga of Ryzom (uhhh GROSS)
Games that have good gfx that are fun.
City of Heros
Dark age of camelot
Anarachy Online
Planetside?

Well seems to me reason a lot of games come out shiny and pretty but have horrible gameplay is simply that too much focus is made on the graphics part.
However hopefully with EQ2 the team is very large so they can focus on all aspects.
It is possible that EQ2 will be nothing more then a pretty game with boring gameplay. But maybe it would also be a game with the best graphics and gameplay. Now would that not be a killer game.
Such a game might cost me my job
Graphics most certainly do not make the game, but I don't believe there is a causal connection between graphics quality and gameplay that makes them inversely proportional. There are some games with fantastic graphics that have done very well. EVE Online has some incredible graphics and is a very fun game (that looks to get better with the Shiva expansion)
Although many people put a premium on high quality GFX as a "must have" for a game, I see it merely as a feature, just like surround sound or character customization. These are nice things, but gameplay is king, and if it's not there, eye-candy means diddly.

There is a fine balance to be struck between gameplay and gfx its up to developers and artists to find that balance
Thats what makes a great game

It's just that it's very harsh to casual gamers.
Every other details in this game is reduced to serve something that many usually try to drift away from.
Perhaps that Asians are more polite to each other in general and then wants something different in their games, ie to kick each others arse.
Wereas we westerners tend to be narrowminded and treat each other bad, if at all, meaning that we dont want the same crap in our games..
Just a thought but that is one huge difference between our cultures and could account for this difference in our games. And if anyone ever seen a asian TV gameshow, much of our other entertainment as well.

I see where you are trying to get at but I have to disagree.
Maybe I have to rephrase it.
Hmmm...
I still play L2. I don't think the game sucks at all, nor do I think its harsh towards the casual gamer. With a wife, four kids, a full time job, and working on another Masters degree I definitely fall into this category.
Yes, the graphics rule. The biggest complaint I've heard about L2 is that it is a huge level grind. Maybe this is true, but if you are a casual gamer like myself, leveling isn't why you play. Admittedly, when I first began, the mouse driven interface drove me bonkers. Mostly because I was an old EQ and DAOC player. For that demographic, any mouse driven game can be irritating. I gave it a chance tho, and soon got used to it. Hell, I even found I liked the speed in which I could change weapons.
Yes. There are many many Asian players in the game (most Chinese). This doesn't bother me in the least either. I've only had one griefer try to give me trouble and he soon learned his lesson (I made a ton of adena selling the armor and bow he dropped).
Keep in mind, the game is still new in North America. Most clans on the servers aren't really powerful enough to engage in the high end game (Clan Wars). I have a feeling L2 is going to be around for a long long time.

uhhh, since when do people hate FFXI? just imagine just the Time configuration is more complex than RO and is meant to be that way , complex..as for L2 it does suck is just another lame, stupid game..

Good graphics = eye candy. It doesn't replace gameplay. They are not related, but they are complimentary.
I agree good graphic (+geometry, lvl design...) seem easly to be able to suck up all the time/money a game project.
As with over markets e.g. Films good GFX (effects) sell and this has nothing to do the the rating it will get in the end.

Of course gfx and gameplay are directly connected, both cost time and money and the developer may not spend enough on gameplay.
But games are usually sold by the graphics in first place!! you may have the best game ever, I will guarantee it will not perfotm when the gfx are too bad (what is too bad is to be defined but people ARE looking for the best one!)
Most people wont even look on bad looking games (or old style ones) as lineage1. Just follow the discussions here. most people are deciding and telling about games without even played them. they have just seen the gfx.
So first thing is to have best graphics, if not you can stop alright there! Then the gameplay comes to terms and what we see now is that this is not as good as it could be.
I think its the way coustomers want to have it done! Everybody is cying for new game concepts and innovation and when a developer dares to do this he will be completly ignored and the people buy the old other things they have ever bought and WILL do....
Only sad thing is, by my opinion, that there seems to now more room left for the special interest titles. They are all dying.
I dont think so, i think when somebody finally does get brave and break with the convension of good graphics but basically the same game that game will do well.
The problem is that this game will have to have a large budget and people do not like to take risks with money. meaning that us the consumer is left with little choice.
When we dont get choice we convince ourselves that what we have is good enough and that is why people are satisfied with some of the crap out at the moment. one day something will come along and you will all think 'why was i playing that?'
Or maybe such a game will never get made, *sigh*

Like it's been said many many times.....
Graphics is what attracts people, and gameplay is what keeps them.
I don't really agree with the posters list on what games "suck" and which are "good" but that is really here nor their as game taste is certainly person dependant.
But, the actually premise of the post "Good GFX = bad game?", is a pretty interesting. I think many gaming companies are missing the boat when it comes to graphics over gameplay.
Just like some others have said, the "eye candy" can get people interested in a game with looks alone, but without gameplay, no game is going to do well long-term and with MMORPG's in particular the whole idea is for companies to keep their players long-term which helps create an online community and thus helps advance the game. How some MMORPG creators miss this concept is quite boggling to me.
I will state a few issue with games I have that other people may or may not see as issues for them.
I am playing CoH but am quite dissappionted in a bunch of aspects of the game. The communication with the "supergroup" size limitation is rediculous and to not have a /who all "SOME SUPERGROUP" command means for me that I have to log in 3 different characters across 3 supergroups to find people I want to play with and each of the people in these supergroups are all the same people with the same isse, a boat load of alts spread across 3 supergroups. The friends list doesn't help since that is more limited then the supergroups size. I just don't see how companies can make such large mistakes (in my eyes).
Lineage 2 was another "eye candy" game that looked pretty darn nice. It was pretty stable, pretty and fairly polished. Content really made me dislike the game though. It seemed ever class and race did the same silly quests without any varation and the lack of differring mobs from one area to another was quite strange. I think these are major areas for a MMORPG and again couldn't understand how a game could be released with such limited content.
SWG was great looking and I was in aww after having only played EQ. The game was fun for the 3 months that I played, but again content drove me away. I felt, like many, that after 3 months and maxing out numerous classes and seeing darn near everything in the SWG world that I had already hit end game. From a company that put out EQ, I was sure dissappointed with the leveling speed and lack of content. If they had slowed the leveling down, maybe they would have had a chance to add more content before many of the gamers maxed out and quit the game so early after release.
These are few examples of things that bothered me in games that I felt went after graphics first and missed on gameplay. I am sure not everyone had the same concerns with the games I cited and that many other issues exist for other people in many other games.
Will EQ2, WoW, and others have similiar issues? I bet each new game will have something a little off, but I have to think the big budget guys will get more right in the next wave of release then these past releases have. Why? The past releases have had more press, forum coverage and write-ups in general about their shortcomings then MMORPGs of the past and now that the market is getting flooded they are really taking notice in my opinion. I have listened/read/watched all the online IRC/radio dev chat that I could lately and I am hearing the devs really trying to make sure they don't go wrong with the upcoming relaeses.
Anyway, that is my 2cp! (more like 1000cp)

Well, I wouldn't say particularly that Good GFX = bad game, but whenever you have games that have good graphics, there is a significant amount of games that fail. Probably because the developers of the game fail to truly harness their idea well, and they mainly try to make the game as visually appealing as possible, instead of thinking about content and what not. Which is why 2d and text based MMO's are cool, I mean they add a lot of unique content and what not, and just forget about graphics, because graphics aren't the main focus of an MMORPG in my opinion, it's all about content and gameplay.
Of course, games like Everquest2 and what not will have good graphics obviously, but that doesn't mean that they will be bad. We will wait and see, but from how it's shaping up, EQ2 looks to be a great game. Only time will tell.
