SWG and FFXI Won't load, I need help!

I have just recently built a new system for myself, and neither Star Wars Galaxies nor Final Fantasy XI will load, I can download the patches and stuff but as soon as the client tries to "boot" or whatever the system freezes. I know I meet all the system requirements, here's my specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2500+

Asus A7V8X-X

256mb PC-2700

80GB HDD

Radeon 9200SE 128Mb DDR

54X CD-ROM

I use wireless a wireless router to share my DSL connection, that is the only thing I can think of that could be throwing things off, but I set my router firewall ports and stuff and no results. I have a Zonet router and a Zonet wirless card.

If anyone has any advice or has expiercened similar problems please post it here, thanks for your help.

Do you have any anti-virus software on your computer? Like Norton? I have to disable Norton internet protection on my compy whenever I wanna play City of Heroes... maybe this could be the source of your problem?

No I don't have anything like that, thanks though.

Do you have any other internet games that you can load up without your system freezing?  If you can't get any internet games to work you might potentially have a registry problem on your computer...  And if you're using Windows XP maybe try turning off the built in firewall if it isn't off already.

ATI cards suck and have alot of problems with FFXI.  Not sure about ATI and SWG but might check driver versions and updating or rolling back.

Well since the problem starts as soon as you finish the client download it most likely is not the card. However, always keep your card up to date with drivers be it ATI,nvidia or whatever.

Also SWG and FFXI ran smoothly for me with a ATI card.

If you are running a firewall i suggest you turn it off and see if the game loads up.A firewall on high setting will often cause trouble until you confirgurate it.

Also good idea to try running other games and see if they have a problem

He said as soon as he tries to execute the exe file it freezes so it probably IS the vid card/drivers.  Try other games that use HT&L and see if they work, if they dont then its likely your drivers or card.

wonder if SWG can actually run with 256RAM?though i think its inside the company's minimum .

  • ramadinramadin Member Posts: 1,304

I think you should still load up the patching screen and server select with low RAM.

I'm sure it's not my video card or RAM because i took both of those components out my old computer that would run both games. I am running 2000 professional, so I'll check to see what kind of firewalls I have. thanks alot for your help guys.

By the way...how do I check my firewall settings?

  • sidebustersidebuster Member UncommonPosts: 1,712
Usually if you have a router it is 192.168.1.1 in your I.E browser.

Win 2k doesnt have its own firewall I dont think.  Did you try to run some other HT&L games?

No...I don't have any lol, but I'm sure its not my video card because SWG would give me a message before it even attemped to load the client if it was my Video card, It tries to load the client (both games) than the screen goes blank and it locks up.

Try putting your Ram in another slot.  Also try to download a demo or 2 off the net and playing them.

Will putting the RAM in diffrent slot really help?

  • ramadinramadin Member Posts: 1,304

LOL its helped similar problems before.  But mainly just if your current slot is bad, or your ram isnt seated correctly.  If youre positive its not your card or your drivers, well that leaves RAM and motherboard basically.

Well, I'm sure it's not my MB, I just bought it like 2 days ago. I put my RAM in another slot...nothing. I'm about to go down to Best Buy and get a another stick and see if that helps...the guy at the computer store did say my RAM sucked, but I didn't think much of it. Well, thanks for the help, I'll post if the new RAM works or not.

Win2k does not have a native firewall. Most 'game won't run' problems are related to one or a combination of the following items. Inadequate hardware, video drivers, audio drivers (yes, audio drivers), the DirectX install, and/or running an Anti-virus application /while/ installing it. It often helps to just re-install DirectX /after/ you have installed the video and audio drivers.

And with Win2k and XP there are occasions when those operating systems will not permit the game to run in anything other than an Administrator's account. But you would receive an error message about that. And even that has a couple of workarounds. Microsoft has Knowledgebase articles about that.

Ramadin's suggestion to try a different slot for RAM can also apply to option cards and PCI Slots. If you have enough PCI slots, don't use the slot right next to the AGP slot. Particularly if you want to use a second video card or a network card in that slot.

Since it appears you haven't even gotten to the 'connect to the internet' stage it is more than likely not your firewall or router. But if you have issues with that go the Sony's station.com and research their resolutions first.

Pretty sure hes not using a router.  And in any case Ive never seen a router firewall cause blank screen freeze ups.  Usually you just get a continuous loading type message or something like its trying endlessly to connect, not a blank screen.

So I went out and bought a new stick of PC-3200 256MB of RAM, I installed it and same result I still get the friggin black screen and the computer locks up, Also when I try to Run Maya 5 (3D Editing Software) it freezes too

  • herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

    Running latest diect x?

Since you build a new system do u have the old graphics card?if so try it out and see if it works.

I also assume since you build a new system you had no previous drivers on it.Because if its the same HDD and you had ndvidia driver on it you have to erase them all before using ATI.

  • jimkmhsjimkmhs Member Posts: 25

I have directx 9, and the harddrive is from the previous computer, but it just used the on board video on the old motherboard.

  • herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

Right ok .Now head to run.type dxdiag .wait for it to load and see if it recognises the ATI card.

Onboard Gcard MUST be disabled from BIOS before the new card is recognised.Otherwise they will either be a conflict or the new card will simply not work.

Problem is while the motherboard is changed the software for the onboard might still be on the HDD thus a conflict.

So post back what the dxdiag says about the card.
