Geez, it's people like you that get me pissed off waveslayer, he asked a question, don't give some stupid answer like that. Keep your mouth shut at times like this if you don't want to offer anything constructive.
Anyway, I would suggest you go look up some info or what not, not really sure what you could do though.

Severs are just computers. So yeah you can get them however you please, rent buy steal what ever... Although you have to rent the bandwidth... that's if you expect to serve alot of people.. Dawg with only 3 people working on this project I sugest you tone it down for now.. Just make a Multi User Dungeon... Graphical if you want to whatever... But after you make the MUD then if you think you're up for it... go for a MMORPG...
just a side note.. A team of 50-100 people work for years to bring out a Game.. (And they are most probably paid) You are a team of three.... so scale your work so that it's atleast feasable... Get it? GOod

All three are options, actually. In the long run, making your own servers, or having someone make them for you, might be a really good idea because then you can easily expand them.
Your biggest problem is bandwith. Renting them will be really expensive if you use too much bandwith, because bandwith usage charges are usually exponential, not flat rate.
Buying an already made server is good, but then you don't know what's in it, it becomes harder to maintain, and you have to rely on someone else when the server goes down.

In a recent interview with the Head Designer of City of Heroes, it was said that you need about 10 million to seriously break into the MMORPG market.

LOL 10 million! What salary are they paying themselves to need 10 million which is 20 times the number EQlive got.
Last numbers i saw was when shadowbane was in make and it said 50,000 to be able to break even.
Now as many have said you can basically run the world from your PC but need bandwitdth. However if your game is small and has very few people you don't need much at all.
Good luck with your project.
nullI say to start with use some kind of cheap companie like server beach or something like that if u just want to test the online part of ur game
Good Luck on ur game i hope i will be playing it soon
Hello Pommi,
I advise you to check the www.gamedev.net forums, maybe post a question there or simply do a search on the forums.
To take a wild guess, you'd probably need atleast a 100mbps connection with a 1TB monthly bandwidth limit. With that setup you'd be able to do some alpha/beta testing since it could run properly with atleast 150-200 users constantly.
Unfortunately nothing is free in this world. Even that kind of a 'basic' setup can be costly. If you are financially challenged like most 'normal' people I suggest you start developing your game and when you start to get it into shape, find sponsors/investors, some may well be interested in sponsoring you a server.
Good luck.

Make a side scroller MMORPG... that would be the shit.
As far as a server, my suggestion would be you run your own, atleast til your out of development stage. Your going to need to update it constantly and your going to want full access to it so you can do security survey's on it and such, along with configuration issues that would be a complete hassle. To make an effective MMORG its going to need to have most of the application stored locally. The server and the client should transfer as LITTLE of data as possible. The server storing character stats, world stats, texture arrangements to a degree, etc.
As for a server itself, you can make it anything, windows or unix based, whatever your preference is. It can just be some raggedy old last years computer laying in the corner most the time.
If you are seriously trying to accomplish this an excellent example of this being done would be RunUO for ultima online, its a private Ultima Online server software using the .Net framework and its open source. You could install the game and run the server software and see example of client server and then look at the code making it happen. The server software runs on any windows box, so you should be able to handle the hardware needs. You can even run it on the same computer as the client if you want.

for the person who said you need alot of people to make a good MMORPG just look at endless ages. www.endlessages.com while its not the best graphics out there it is a realy good game (if you like MMORPG/FPS) i think it was made by like 5 people. the game has been live for about 2 years now.
keep up the hard work, and keep me in mind when it comes time for beta

if EA was still the way it was at the end of beta 10, i would still be playing however the devs destroyed the game sadly, so i left so did many many many others
