So today I bought the box version of Everquest II: Echoes of Faydwer. I get home and open it up to find there's no CD key inside. I read on the support boards and find that CD keys can be located on the back of the manual, or on the inside of the CD Case. Mine was in neither place, so naturally I'm pretty pissed off. I tell my friend, who had bought same game from the same Gamestop a day earlier, what happened. He says something along the lines of "That sucks..." and then a minute later "Wait, I have a CD key in my case AND on the back of the manual." His game (which he some how got for $10 instead of $40) had come with 2 CD keys. He got an $80 value for $10.
Anyways, he gives me his extra key and I activate my account. I installed the client and waited the two hours for it to update, and then I closed it to relaunch it and actually get in to the game. I look for the Shortcut on my desktop, and I was surprised to find a AVI file short cut right under the EQ2 one. The Shortcut was named "Transformers - The Movie DVD Trailer". I clicked on it, and it opened a trailer for the "20th Anniversary Transformers Movie Edition".
SOE actually installed a random trailer for an old, dated cartoon movie that I recall seeing when I was 10 years old. It definitely didn't mention this anywhere in the installation process; it simply installed the clip in the Sony folder without any prompting. They packaged a movie trailer for little kids with a game that had a Teen rating.
EQ2 is a great game, and I highly recommend it to anyone. Sony, however, has got to be the worst game publisher in MMOG history. It's gotten to the point where they're not even trying to hide the extra crap they install on your PC.

What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...
Wow, you are really reaching for something to use as trash talk against SoE if this is what you come up with.
I know amongst the forum people around that it's the cool thing to do (bash SoE) but, eh, you're kinda streaching it here.
Plus I thought the Transformers Movie Trailer looked sweet. ( I saw it when I saw Shrek 3 ). It was my favorite cartoon when I was a kid. That and Thundercats. haha
are you sure that trailer wasnt for the Transformers movie coming out July 4th?
if not..and it was that old ass movie..thats pretty craptastic
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
As for the cd-key, you should have just returned it, or contacted SOE rather than just complain and not actually do anything about it.
I had a similar problem and it was addressed and fixed very quickly.
Oh my god, they installed an .avi file on my computer it's the end of the world... oh wait... *delete*
Now you're just fishing for reasons to hate SOE. Come on, you can admit it, I won't tell!
Also you got a copy of the game without a CD key and you don't return it or contact SOE to do something about it? It happens all the time.
-Currently looking forward to FFXIV
-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda
About the key, I couldn't find mine at first either. Turns out that it was on a small sticker in the inside corner of the box, above the DVDs. It was not in the book, not on a separate piece of paper, or anything like that.
As for the movie, I love The Transformers so for me finding the trailer / ad for the enhanced anniversary movie was a bonus. I'd love to see it, personally. If I weren't such a fan of Transformers, though, I suppose that I would think that it was a bit silly.
I can't remember which one it was, but another EQ / EQ2 release had an additional movie as well. It wasn't an advertisement though, it was actually an incredibly cool music video from NASA. The music stage was designed VERY Roman-esque, and all of the musicians in the choir were dressed in togas and such.
The video had a nice animation of Mars eventually being terra-formed and becoming an Earth-like planet, and I think that it ended with a child holding the new livable planet in their hands.
I'll have to look for it, but it was an incredible find. Browsing the CDs sometimes pays off nicely. :-)
EDIT: Found it. That didn't take long. The NASA music video is in the Shadows of Luclin expansion for the original EverQest. It's located on the first disc and is called "Vangelis_Mythodea.wvx".
There are also trailers for the anime Metroplis (which I didn't like, FYI), Knight's Tale (which rocked), and Final Fantas: The Spirits Within.
Good'ol YouTube. Here's the vide on The SoL CD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_U4k_lc3pE
Anyway, it's not the first time SOE has put trailers or other stuff in their EQ games.

*Picture of a kid sitting at his computer, in his hand he holds his new video game's manual. His mouth is agape, his face, a picture of frustration and fury. In large bold print across the middle of the picture you read the words "WTF!!! NO CD KEYZ!!!" Near the bottom of the photo, promptly printed... Own3d.*
Sorry.
You know... Most of us just contact support instead of messing around.
Also, $40 for the box? You kinda messed up there... Alot..
So, good going, I blame You for the whole situation as it's too stupid to be serious.

Thats just life. Its sad lots of people would lose jobs, but if they keep making games which everybody hates them for. then they will go out of buisness, so the people will have to get new jobs. If this happened alot of gamers would think it was a bright day, since they hate them so much.
my opinion is neutral, i wish them the best of luck. but if they keep screwing gamers and making crap games then its inevitable.
