Need more Sci-Fi

aleosaleos Member UncommonPosts: 1,943
Tabula rasa and huxley seem to be the only sci-fi MMORPG's coming out at any time in the next 2 years or whatever Anarchy Online to me still dominates the sci fi MMO world. I am getting tired of playing all these midevil MMO's. Sci fi fans speak up. Am i missing something?

Unfortunately, no, you don't seem to be missing anything.  And with STO turning in the direction of multi-crew EVE, looks like you've just about covered the Sci-Fi.  The two best Sci-Fi MMOs (other than AO and EVE and AA) have gone down:  first EnB and then SWG.  Of course, if you look at single-player games too, and even movies and TV, it seems the Powers that Be (read people with money to develop and create) have decided that Sci-Fi died with Roddenberry.  We just don't want Sci Fi.  We'd much prefer more elves and orcs with swords and pointy hats.  Or even pirates with swords and pointy hats (and parrots).

Now, I do know there are a couple of other sci-fi MMOs that are in VERY early stages.  Conflict Omega is one that comes to mind immediately.  Post Apoc stuf.  Could be REAL interesting, that one.  Some great ideas being tossed around in their forum.  They even plan to have some complex crafting/gathering.  But that's still YEARS away, if it ever comes to fruition.

I keep searching the games lists for upcoming Sci Fi but it looks like Lord British will be the only light on the galactic horizon.  Yes, AO is still the King of Sci Fi currently, but when you get into it, you find that even they've put most of their marbles into beefing up the swords and necromantic critters of Shadowlands more than I think is fitting for good Sci Fi.  Ah, Lord British, save us!

Fallen Earth will be the one to watch.

Oh, there are also some folks just starting on a Shadowrun MMO, open source.  Find them at Awakened.

Some IPs that I'd love to see:  Hammer's Slammers, Falkenburg's Legion, Honor Harrington and (incredibly not done yet) Battletech.  Battletech and Shadowrun seem to be tailor-made for MMOs.  Oh, wait...Microsoft's got both of those now, yes?  (heavy sigh)

Yes, I agree - the sci-fi segment is a bust at the moment, mostly.

I'll tell ya, you think people got mad at SOE for the mess they made of SWG, you should have been around for when EA crushed Westwood Studios and then killed Earth & Beyond.  People were furious, and personally, I haven't bought a single EA game since.  That was a great game, and was getting better all the time.  But EA squashed it, completely without regard to it's future possibilities. I know, I know - the almighty dollar. ::sigh::

Me, I am waiting for Tabula Rasa. But even that isn't as "sci-fi" as I would like.  Here's hoping STO isn't completely diluted, as the fears around here seem to indicate.

I really hope BioWare is doing a KoTR-like MMO.  SWG could have been much much better if they didn't confine it to the period during the first movies.

I just really hope we see some good releases of these types of games in the next 5 years or so...

Theres a few sci fi mmos coming out I think tabula rasa is the first we will see released followed by huxley and then sto. It seems with mmos they either make a sci fi game or a fantasy game, someone should do something original like flying labs are with pirates of the burning sea. maybe combine the two genres, game thats set in the future in a world thats had magic all along.

Or make a horror game although i hear ccp are doing something to do with horror, or a decent tactics game; tactics orge is the best game imo ever made im sure if they could implement a turn based strategy game that isnt aimed at kids if they tried, pox nora and dofus are both aimed at kids, but they  show turn based games can be implemented in an online world.

I'm still waiting for someone to realize there isn't a mature version of the pokemon games, I'm sure theres a market for games that have you raise monsters, and have them fight each other but with blood and guts flying everywhere  or better than that a grand theft auto type game online where we can beat old grannies with sticks

I understand most choose sci fi, or fantasy since it leaves more room for your own types of worlds, but theres no reason you cant do the same in a game based on history, but with a twist or something. seems the mmo market is very stagnant when it comes to orginality.

Nobody mentioned Stargate Worlds. Is that too far off, or just not regarded as something worth keeping track of?

No, SGW is actually looking quite interesting, but will be around about the same time as STO. But that could be mid- to late-2008, or even later.  We are missing sci-fi NOW.

Don't forget Infinity: Quest For Earth.

Other nice Sci-Fi mmo's are PlanetSide and Starport: Galactic Empires. But they both don't deliver what you ask.

    I don't like planet"y" Sci-Fi games. I have yet to find a good Sci-Fi game.

Force of Arms is also on the list here. Currently in Alpha but doing well and updating daily, recent adds to the main site for new biological mechs from the Genoman faction were added. It's the "Mech' MMORPG which uses the Hero Games system for combat and roleplay. Currently being developed on Multiverse (Beta). We are active on the forums and have plenty of media, and pdf's to download. Come visit us at www.forceofarms.com.
