Poll: Which do you prefer, Sci Fi or Fantasy MMORPG?

gillvane1gillvane1 Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,503
I'm sure there's a few of these already, but I wanted to see the current results. It's a pretty easy, black and white poll, but of course there's the none of the above answer thrown in, in case you want a Pirate MMORPG< or a maybe horror, wild west, Hello Kitty fantasy Island, or who knows what.

Fantasy = EQ, DAoC, VAnguard, WoW, etc.

Sci Fi = Auto Assualt, EVE, SWG, AO, etc.

Answering the poll doesn't mean you like one of these particular games, just that you prefer one category over another.

I don't mind if the game is fantasy or Sci-fi as or something else, as long it's well done and it's fun.

Yeah, I'm pretty well fantasied out after 3 years of WoW.  I can't wait for the Stargate MMO.  Though I'd like to see at least one decent history based MMO.

Your vote is only relevant if you have a preference. Not that many votes so far, yet the results are surprising. Maybe players have finally satisfied their thirst for fantasy games, OR the players that like fantasy are all in WoW instead of on this forum, while the sci fi fans are still looking around for something good to play.

In terms of RPGs I prefer fantasy over sci-fi in general.

However, fantasy has been done to death, whereas sci-fi, and I mean really good, solid sci-fi, has not been done well at all, and certainly not as frequently. I would give my eye teeth for a really good, high-quality sci-fi game. NOT because I like SF better than fantasy, but because it' d be different for a change.

You answered the question by You self.

    1. More Fantasy games in market. Because people like them, but after having too much, they do want more choises, something different.

    2. Those who are happy with games, they are there and playing, not here writing stuff.

I voted other. Actually I like both genres but I would like to see both fantasy and sci-fi combined into a single MMO. FF3 for SNES was a good combination of sci-fi and fantasy as it combined fantasy with its variety of magical spells and abilities with lots of sci-fi features such as robot factories and genetic like engineering. Chrono Trigger was a good mixture of sci-fi and fantasy as it had time travel, tech gadgets, and magic. Other than mixing sci fi and fantasy a good historical MMO would be fun I think. Something like POTBS which might be good.

Sitheus, I like the way you think!  Both the mixing of the two and a historical MMO would be great to see!  Include Ryzom as a mixing of the two...

I think I'd label that as Cyberpunk possibly, but not necessarily, something like the Shadowrun universe.

Good games are so hard to find.......that setting is far down my list of things that would eliminate a game from consideration.

Sci-Fi. The possibilities are infinite. Imagine something like Ender's Game, 2001 Space Odyssey or Fifth Element with a Quentin Tarrentino (think Kill Bill) edge. OK that's just my personal dream, but it's sci-fi so anything you can imagine. This market is wide open and the first big company that gets it right (or even close to right) is going to get a large, loyal and more mature-than-average fan base. I am watching closely and if TR, Huxley, Stargate or Star Trek turn out to be well-designed games with responsive development teams I'm there for the life of the game.

QFT.  I love both genres.  It all depends on the context.

MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan

This doesn't look like a typical shae post....What have you done with shae?!

Well, at any rate, we're in luck 'shae'. Funcom's "The Secret World" is widely rumored to be based on H.P.Lovecraft's "Cthulhu Mythos"!

Fantasy intrigues me more than sci fi.
  • ScriarScriar Member Posts: 772
I don't really mind either. the problem i have at the moment is the way the games are/feel.

for instance fantasy is always elfs with big boobs, and men that need to stay off the steriods. and isnt really original, just very mainsteam type fantasy. I like the fantasy that aventurine are going for with darkfall, really gritty, not over the top, its believable.

As for sci fi, its always ship to ship battles ;/ or some rip off of star trek/star wars. If it was the kind of sci fi that Half life or akin the the alien movies, so a mix of sci fi horror id be more interested in it.

Think i just prefer dark gritty worlds, where everything isnt perfect, where things are believable.

Hmm i sound like an emo

I love fantasy games but if a decent sci-fi game comes along I might change my mind.

Something that hasn't alot of bugs at launch and is actually fun to play.

But I will probably prefer Age of Conan over Tabula Rasa.

  • AshGUTZAshGUTZ Member Posts: 339

I would probably like Sci-Fi games more if most of them weren't bad.

Since almost every MMORPG i've played that I had any liking towards was fantasy [thus far], I guess i'll have to throw in a vote for Fantasy.

A Call of Cthulhu MMO would be a great idea.

Get to work and we will see what you come up with five years from now.

Fantasy is overdone. Since most games are fantasy this means theres alot of crap fantasy mmo's. But admit; all the best mmo's are fantasy, its the best genre. It would be nice to have some more sci-fi, for a change and more original fantasy ie AoC (ie no wow/tolkien stuff). I think we will be seeing less [high fantasy/ genric fantasy] mmorpg clones ie WAR, WoW etc. in the future especially after the success of AoC and tabula rasa (yes i'm a seer). I really wanna see a sw:kotor mmo, that would rock the sci fi genre IMO.

I would actually like to see a time travel type of MMO that has both types. Although i bet making something like that would be real difficult.
