I prefer Fantasy. Science Fiction MMORPG are too confusing for me to remember. All the new controls, where to go, etc.

Would Rakion be considered a fantasy game? o.o

However, fantasy has been done to death, whereas sci-fi, and I mean really good, solid sci-fi, has not been done well at all, and certainly not as frequently. I would give my eye teeth for a really good, high-quality sci-fi game. NOT because I like SF better than fantasy, but because it' d be different for a change.

I hope kotor are the first to make an amaxzing sci fi mmo, since it was the best sci fi rpg in my and many others opinions.

EDIT: maybe kotor is good because it is both a fanatasy and sci fi game really. There is robots and space travel, but also magic and swords.

I haven't heard any of the Sci Fi MMORPGs you've named.

    Sci Fi!!!

    As long as its not:

_____ have invaded Earth. A brave ___ soldier from _____ has to save the world. He sloughters 100000k Hi Tech aliens who can even travel in space with his pistol or knife. All aliens die because their High Tech was stupid enough not to check viruses are lethal to them. THE END.

It would be plot/lore/tech easier to have: scientsts discover a world where laws of physics no onger work. they open a gate and soldiers (PC's) can go through when they reach 1/2 the game time. so first people play sci fi and after a bit of play time they go through to the gate and play fantasy.

I like fantasy more, however, im getting sick of it would rather play a sci-fi mmorpg... to bad their are none coming out  .. Don't even say Tb thats like a  2nd or 3rd rate mmo.

Best way [IMO]:  GURPS!  Create 1 character and send her/him anywhere, anytime!  I'd start with 9 possible worlds to be transported to - naked, like in Terminator, so you'd need to gear up there.  The area you'd TP to would have your locker [can view all, but only add/remove from that planet] and an apartment [which you can set to let others enter, but not take stuff].  Totally skill-based [and to some extent, gear-based] - basic skills taught all over, some skills only learnable from a specific trainer on a specific world.  Crafted gear always better than vendored gear.  Realistic loot drops - can use almost all drops in some type of crafting.  Kill a humanoid, take his stuff [may be better or worse - either way, the MOB uses what he drops]

    The basic 9 worlds:

High Magic/Midieval Tech                     High Magic/Modern Tech [magic is better!]                     High Magic/Future Tech [AC Clarke*]

    Medium Magic/Midieval Tech               Medium Magic/Modern Tech [Shadowrun-ish]               Medium Magic/Future Tech [Star Wars-ish]

No Magic/Midieval Tech                        No Magic/Modern Tech                                                        No Magic/Future Tech

Use the same ruleset for each world with the only exception being how well magic works - some skills/spells may be greyed out on some worlds.

I don't know why their are more votes for sci-fi than fantasy.  Fantasy games have been way more popular than sci-fi, and right now it still is.  Look at WoW, that's easily the most populated game, EVE doesn't even come close to comparing to WoW in population.  my guess for the pole having more sci-fi votes is mostly sci-fi players are in this forum, or, like a lot of people already said, theyre getting tired of fantasy games and want sci fi, but as of now, fantasy games are much more popular

WOW's popularity is not based on it being fantasy. If Blizzard had chosen to make "World of Starcraft" instead, but otherwise made the game fundamentally the same, it' d be just as popular as WOW is now. It is not the fantasy elements that make people like WOW but everything else.

The reason everyone plays fantasy is because that is all there is being realistically offered right now. If people made viable, good non-fantasy games, lots of us would play them. But, the problem is that when they make non-fantasy games, the developers don't make sure to make the whole game... instead they take D&D/fantasy game mechanics and "skin" them for sci-fi. This is doomed to failure. A tech/sci-fi based world is NOT going to work in a manner consistent with fantasy game mechanics.

Until developers realize this, their sci-fi offerings will just keep failing or being "niche" because they're just attracting people who like the SKIN, rather than people who want an SF oriented game.

    What mechanics do you mean?

Do you mean classes vs skills?  Do you mean using mechanical aids instead of spells to boost abilities?  Do you mean using FPS type aiming instead of auto-attacks?  Do you mean different species for players?

What mechanic does a sci-fi game have that isn't done in a fantasy game?

Of course, like many other people, I enjoy playing both genres. However, the fantasy devision, in my opinion, just has much better games. The real question is, what type of graphics do you prefer?

I've played many games, and the ones that I play change weekly. Currently I am very interested in Gunbound, Poker, and Kwon Ho once more. I am thinking of returning to Maple Story and Ghost Online.

yeah i would have to say that sci-fi games arnt really all that good yet. the fantasy ones you tend to be able to do more with because you can go more out on a limb with it

I am kind of sick of the fantasy setting mmmorpg's. I would love to see another sci fi game that would capture my heart like SWG pre cu did (bugs and all). I have high hopes for tabula rasa. But I will be trying warhammer also which of course is another fantasy game.

I voted sci fi as i would like to play a good one but none exist yet.

'Fantasy' (as in anything with men+elfs+goblins+dnd/middleearth alike) is really tired now. I think the problem with a good scifi game though would be having a decent setting for it. IMO without the right setup it will be bland. With 'Fantasy' you already have your lore, your tree hugging elves, war-loving orcs, goodygood humans etc etc. Its just lazyness. Some other fantasy setting would be nice tho, one that actually has some creativity beyond just giving the races new names but new races entirely. I cant see it happening anytime soon... i'm sure WAR will keep my gaming needs satisfied for the next couple years.
