All MMORPGs Suck?

im looking to get into a mmorpg but it seems that everybody thinks they all suck........

iv played SWG and FFXI, i thought SWG was really fun until they started to nerf things i used as for FFXI i didnt even get past the free trial membership and the game that people agree is good is UO and im not paying for a game that out of date

i was looking at a few games, leniage2 looks good but people say its very boring unless ur in a good clan, DAoC looks good too but i dont want to go around looking for all the mods and expansions, ashertons call2 doesnt give me a lot of info when i go to the site

im waiting for WoW but until them im looking for a fantasy mmorpg thats easy to play like SWG, and i would be really thankful if somebody could help me...........

Yeah, a big problem of MMORPGs is that their website makes it sound all good and sooooo interesting and fun, but the playerbase is really important. A game isn't always played in the same manner the devs intended. Just because it sounds like the game of your dreams, it might actually be a nightmare.

In your case I would go with L2. A clan is a great factor to have but you can play without one or even just stumble across one. Overall L2 is fairly quick and easy to jump into headfirst, especially if your just waiting for something bigger and better. I am guessing you could get a good one or three months out of this game if you haven't played before. I also am willing to bet that you won't feel to bad upon leaving it either when your time comes.

Another option you could consider that is not fantasy is CoH.

You should definitely stay away from EQ and UO, if you don't have the time to nurture your characters there it would be a waste in the long run if you are only planing on staying so short.

I am in the same boat as you are, I am thinking picking up the retail version of L2, or maybe I can find some more books to read and beta applications to fill out till Doom 3 is unleashed.

*** Yes the WoW beta is fun but don't feel the need to continue with it since I'm not finding any critical bugs and don't want to get get burned out on a game before it becomes released.

DAoC is an extremely fun MMORPG.  And there's currently only 2 expansions out that you would need to purchase, the others are all free downloads.  Plus if you just want it to tide you over till WOW comes out, you probably won't even need to buy the expansions and can keep yourself busy on the basic game itself.

Actually now that I think about it I will not be playing Lineage II.

I was connected to the site via some link and saw one of the costume contest winners. For some strange reason now when I think of Lineage II all I can picture is a 300lb blonde in an elven two piece with matching gloves and clogs.

... And thank the gods she wasn't sporting the dark elven costume.

L2 is the most boring, tedious, uneventful game. The only thing good about the game is the graphics, lack of bugs and overall performance. Besides that, it lacks everything some of the older MMO's have. DAoC is nice, but if your new to it, it will probably take you awhile to reach 50.

i expected to see people calling me stupid for saying they all suck but nomatter which game u look at on these forums theres always tons of people complaining prolly because the ones who like it are playing and the people who have played a lot of them usually quit and go back to the old favorites,

tomorrow im going to see which game i buy, and ill keep waitin for WoW and GW

  • OrillionOrillion Member Posts: 24

different mmorpgs appeal to different people, and the majority of complaints have come from the comparisons of EQ2 and WoW and have spilled over into other RPG's. Both games look promising, and both will have different aspects which people will enjoy or not enjoy. That's like saying all console games suck, they have different features -- just categorized in the same genre.

  • ianubisiianubisi Member Posts: 4,201

People on forums tend to complain. It's best you come to realize that that is how it is. Gaming experiences are almost never as bad as forum posts suggest.

  • DustyBallzDustyBallz Member Posts: 152

No, they don't ALL suck, but a lot of them have the same basic things wrong with them. There are aspects of MMOs that are literally game-killing to some people. All I can recommend is to read up, get some trusted opinions, and jump in feet first. You won't know if you will like anything until you try it.

If I was you I would go for FFXI. period. best mmorpg out there right now that actually HAS a point of playing it. and I would nto go for L2...never.. there you won't have fun. you will just get pked by stupid morons, so it's pointless to pay-to-play a game that whenever you log in you have to watch you're back and it should not be like that.. some stupid morons just like to pk n00bs just because they are n00bs.. I tell ya. people are more and more stupid these days...

so basically, you are saying that YOU HAVE TO act the way they tell you to or you get pked? is that what you are saying? if so...that is really fucked up..

The industry seems to be in some kind of a low-point at the moment. Most people seem to be waiting for either WoW or EQ2.

Personally I'm bending towards WoW since I've always liked Blizzard's games. But I'm not counting anything out either.

I've been playing for a while now, I'm level 24 or so, and I've never once been PKed, and not because I act how someone tells me or whatever, never even been in a "go somewhere else or be PKed" situation or anything like that...

And when both of those games show up, people will still be waiting. Malcontents will never be satisfied.

Incidentally, I would submit that the industry is not at a low point at all. It's in a growth phase, and there are plenty of exceptional games to play...and many, many more very good ones coming.

Bah.. very, VERY, few people PK past level 4 in that game.  Either you never got past level 10 or you never even played the game.  When people PK they go red, which means they'll drop their equipment when they die.  Nobody wants that, so nobody PKs.

L2 is a great game.. getting to level 20 can be a little boring but aftre level 20 the game is really great.. and c1 comes out this month! yay image

DAoC is coming out with a Platinum Box which include all the expansion on June 22nd. It's only about $30. You should try it out. It's a good mmorpg. As for Lineage2, stay away from it as far as possible.

Malcontents? You're not implying anything now, are you?

First of all, well "low-point" may be a bit rough statement. What I was aiming at was that the scene is evolving since less players are playing the "old" MMORPGs and either waiting for the new ones or playing the ones that have been released inside 6 months. Now of course this isn't anything strange, people tend to get bored, especially online players and I think it's their god-given right to do so. Why pay for a service that doesn't please you like you want it to?

But you have to remember that MMORPGs aren't "normal" games. They're designed (our atleast should be) to get a solid playerbase and keep them interested not necessarily lure loads of new players, while old ones leave, to keep that playerbase. Unfortunately this seems to be the case with most MMORPGs today since the latter method tends to be "better" in financial terms. A recycling playerbase is mostly a good thing but not for the wrong reasons.

I guess I'm trying to state that the scene is more in the hands of the gaming companies than the players. Of course we can vote with our wallets, which seems to be the only good way to get your voice out these days, but in reality most people play what can be played rather than playing what they'd really like to play.
