Is it worth Playing?

FaithfulLokiFaithfulLoki Member Posts: 6
I was actually looking at trying out City of Heroes but I'm not really sure because I don't know anyone that actually plays it.  Is it worth the money?  Am I going to be able to jump right in and start moving up in the ranks? I generally like playing in groups but solo is fun too.  Is this game for me?

Well I played back a long time ago but never fully focused as I was too much into WoW and EQ2 at the time.  Recently I left WoW for LOTRO and then left LOTRO to go back to EQ2.  As good of game as both LOTRO and EQ2 are I am just sick and tired of elves, dwarves and such.  So I decided to try COH/COV again and really starting to enjoy it.

I have played each class type to between 5 and 7, so I can't speak of anything but very early game experience but from what I have seen so far returning to the game is that at least on Freedom server there are a ton of low level characters to group with.   I grouped last night for a while doing the Hollow's Troll quest.   Today I have been playing with my Defender and been soloing pretty well.   At least at low levels I have noticed that even controllers and defenders solo pretty well.

The game runs very smoothly with no lag that I can see even when in areas with a few dozen players around me.

Everyone seems very friendly as well.

If you are a dedicated player that achieve like a madman, you will get to max level before a month passes (no cheating or PLing required) and add a few more weeks to max accolades, IO sets and everything there is to earn in game...so a new player can definitely join and even catch up if they care about it, no matter if you are hardcore or casual.  I play 12 characters myself...

What you see, is what you get.  Don't expect a mystical change in gameplay at any point, it will just complexify itself and refined itself, but you won't have to suddenly start playing another game because you reach level X, Y or Z.  That's been said, there is a raiding option, a endgame grouping option, PvP options and much more.  You just pick what is appealing to you, and you are free to ignore everything else.

Finally, but not the least.  Let's say that for any reason you like CoX a lot and eventually convince some of your friend to join...you can group day 1 with him as a sidekick, or he can examplar you down to level 1, whichever appeal the most the you both.  You can play your main toon with your friend!

I can't emphasize enough what a great approach this is. I actually think you should play each one to 10 before falling in love with a character.

At the early levels they're all "brawl, use my one attack, repeat until safe, rest." But before long the powers differentiate and characters can really feel different.

The only thing I want to warn you neuronomad is that enemies have extra-low hp before level 10. So a 50 enemy is as tough to a lvl 50 player as a 10 enemy is to a 10 player, but a 4 enemy is especially easy to a lvl 4 player. If that makes sense. So you may stars to feel the controllers and defenders not soloing quite so well anymore after 10. But they pick up later a bit when their attack powers fill in, and they're always great on teams.

Thanks about the tid-bits on the HP of the lower characters.

I have fallen in love with the game.  Had I actually invested some time with it in the past instead of just installing it, and doing the tutorial (never try a second MMO when you are majorly hooked on another one because you will not give it a fair shake).

I didn't play my Defender or Controller tonight, pretty much played my Scrapper and Blaster.  The one thing that I have noticed is that there are a zillion ways you can configure your charcters stat wise.   I love the whole enhancement deal.   I just discovered about combining enhancments too.  That made a world of difference.

I think my favorite thing about the game is other than managing enhancments and those short term buffs (argh what are they called again?) is that you don't have to juggle bag space.   That is the one major part of LOTRO that I loved, from the begininng you have plenty of bag space.   And for this game it is even better because other than the invention compoents you don't there isn't loot.

I am a very action-oriented person.   This game fits that mode so well.   Some people used to LOTRO, EQ2 and WOW Lore most likley would not like the fact that for the most part the quest (er mission logs) are very short and to the point.   Personally I have ADHD when it comes to my gaming and I love this.    I play for the action not for the Lore of a game and this game fits that mold very well.

Oh yeah you may noticed some mobs have "down arrows"... it means they are easier than their level indicates (For example a level 10 with 3 down arrows means they're as difficult as a lvl 7 mob) and is meant for soloing. You can also change your mission difficulty now and it gives you mobs with "up arrows".. these on the other hands means the mob is harder than it's level indicates. A minion that is level 10 with 1 up arrow means it's as difficult as a level 11 mob while a lieutenant with 1 up arrow actually means its as tough as a level 12 mob.

for the OP, i myself have just come back to COH. I must say its majorly improved from sept 2004. as people here have stated the game is quick to pick up but fun to master. enhancements are a fun aspect in the game to make your characters stats truly unique. to the other poster its called "INSPIRATIONS" which are temporary buffs, for accuracy , defense, rage(dmg increase), perpception, renew your power, heal yourself, also a self rez (with a temp stun effect). the xp debt is fairly balanced so you wont bebusting your butt tro get back into xp. the grouping is really fun

i have already went to areas such as faultline, talos island and done missions for those areas and they fun as hell.Soloing is also well balanced too. PVP i havent tried it as of yet cause im only lvl 22 blaster. This game is a good departure if your tired of elves, and dwarves. the game has good story based missions, also has a good raid option for end game events. As far as lowbies, there areplenty on Freedom and Virtue as they ted to be the 2 servers I see that has 2 dots for their population (2 dots i believe is medium pop) supergroups are fun (they are guilds) you can have your own superhero base :P the invention system is really unique so you can make your own specialized custom enhancements and sell them to other players. The list goes on but the game also really handles well performance wise, ive had upwards of a couple dozen people around me and didnt lag the framerate stayed pretty steady. in short, you cant go wrong with this game. its fun, community is good, you can group, u can solo, you can pvp, you can follow story arcs all you need to enjoy yaself and then some. oh yeah, the costume making is like a game unto itself as it allows you to make a truly unique character

This game is totaly worth your time since I'm homeschooled I'm constantly on it, and never gotten tired of it, since been playing for over a year now, and usually like WoW and GW, I end up getting bored of a game within a couple months, but I'm glued to CoH/CoV, I even got a ton of my friends to join it just by playing my account took me some time to get it back haha....but like I tell eveyrone tr the trial don't like it well all games arn't ment for everyone, but I always seem to make them change there minds cause I always make the game seem more fun to play....So if ya do and for anyone else, ya can find me by putting @Mystic Gear I'm always on most the time if nto leave a message I'll definatly responed when I get on, always there to backj ya up when you need help or in a tight spot ^^.

Well for me CoX was my first MMo experience... so I had to come throw in my few cents worth.  It's fun... period! There's usually something to do from running missions, managing your character, PVP, or even standing around Atlas City gambling or entering costume contests.

I have to admit though, the mission grinding can get repetitive and around level 28 of my first character I started to get bored... but while on a team we got an invite to fight Lusca. For those who don't know Lusca is a Giant Octopus that is classified as a Giant Monster and it usually takes around at least 20 people to kill. But the experience alone was enough to hook me for good.

Also the missions are only short for the lower level characters... once you really start getting into the higher levels you can find yourself on one mission map for upwards to 2 hours... then there's Task Forces... these are a series of missions that have to be run as a team... in the end you always get a cool new badge and some other reward of your choice.

Overall I'd recommend the game to anyone... there's all types of powers to choose from and you probably won't have a problem finding a build that suits you. For melee specialists there's Scrappers/Tanks... if you like ranged attacks there's Blasters/Defenders... if you like support there's Controllers/Blasters... I could go on and on listing the different combinations for different specialties without even getting into the specific power pools, that's just how cool it is. Then You can't forget about the Epic Archetypes that you unlock after getting a character to level 50... and I haven't even started talking about Villians yet! So yeah... give it a try.

That’s not completely true. While you’re correct it does lower there effectiveness, each arrow doesn’t reflect a level decrease. Some “debuffs” are stronger then others and reduce the enemies effectiveness more.

But, if you are see nearly constant ‘down arrows’ (red = resistance, purple = defense) it could mean that another player on your team is using his own ‘debuff’ power, and the combined ‘debuffs’ are stacking.

    To the OP:

If you get the trail, to test the game, making one of each type is going to limit you to only seeing the early zones.

What I’d suggest is going to the official forums and stating “hey, I’m new. I’d like to get a short tour of the city (heroes) isles (villains). Would anyone be willing to show me?”

I’ll guarantee a response nearly instantly. If you’re on the Justice server, I can or will have someone show you a lot of really memorizing things. I/we wouldn’t ruin anything for you, but just give you taste of what’s to come.

Also, some of the real highlights for me on my first character:

Capes @ lvl 20 - Really makes you feel like a hero

Auras @30 – completes that perfect costume you’ve dreamed about. When you made that Ice shield/Ice melee tanker, did you want a glowing mist of blue surrounding him b/c he’s cold? DO IT!

And with the addition of Inventions, you’ll be able to really customize your character like never before.

This game is not a typical fantasy dwarf/elf/hobbit/whatever game and shouldn’t be viewed as such. While it –can- be a hardcore gamer’s game, it typically is not. If number crunching and insane PvP is what you want, this game doesn’t really fit that mold. Casual and constant fun is it’s niche. … and superheroes/supervillains.

CoX is the best MMO in genre for Character Creation.  Designing your look is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game.  Just this system alone is enough fun to give the game a shot.

It is very action oriented.  After you get to your mid 20's, you'll keep your fingers quite busy during combat firing off different powers or inspirations (temp buffs).

Grouping is easy.  For the most part, finding a group is easy at lower levels.  Finding a group at higher levels can be easy or difficult depending on your class / build.

The new invention system gave the game a sort of crafting and trading side, that to me was non-existent before.

The game is very alt-friendly, since characters advance quickly.

Travel powers are awesome.  You've got to try fly, super jump, and super speed.  It's just FUN since it's so super human to do any of these things.

Cons:  The scenery gets very repetative in missions.  The insides of office buildings don't change enough to keep it visually interesting.

This is just a quick reply to the topic name itself, this thread may have close to nothing to do with the subject line but i'm going to assume it does. Hopefully being right.

City of Heroes, in my opinion is worth playing. I have payed for TWO games in my past years of MMORPG addictions. This has just become my third. Keep in mind, I only paid for one non-recurring month. I enjoy the character customization, the grinding doesn't bug me, and the combat is pretty fun (not super slow like alot of free games). The community is a great thing with this game though. If you search the forums you will see 89% of them are just players that truly love their game for what it is, and they love helping one another. Most people in-game are joking around and just wanting to group to grind. I really only considered playing it because my WoW has been taken from me for good, so it was a good way to waste time until War Hammer. Still, it is worth playing in my eyes.

One test it there are trials for it and people can send out 4 buddy keys at a time.

I like the game and it has a ton of class choices, that being said it get old and fast. Maybe finding a  good super team to be in will help the game.. but just starting out solo and playing solo get very repetitive after level 20 if not before that.

Still the game is 1000000% fun to play around with so try out a trial or two or three :).

Is the game solely based on your skills,or is it a loot game where gear matters? and are there good areas you can pvp in,other than arenas?

The game is fun for about a month.....The its down hill boring! No gear really nothing that affects your abilities like in other games (mainly cause there is no ability scores of any kind) theres no real reward. You do a quest get influence (money), sometimes an enhancement (power augmentation). Rinse repeat. Everyone sings the praises of the invetion system but it really doesnt help the game it's still boring. Combat is boring no spectacular animations common to other games. everybody does the same base damage with powers unless modified with enhancements but after you learn the system its still predictable.

Really though I wouldn't waste your money on this one its not worth it. Honestly it's not worth it.

hm, this is a tough one. hamidons make a big difference in PvP but not quite as bad as super-loot grinds for compariso sake. someone does have to at least use skill to kill you. there are FFA and some other zones. havent played in awhile so I dunno bout how much IOs have changed the game. it might be a little more gear dependant now but i cant ever seeing it becoming absolutely necessary to wi a fight, jsut carry more inspirations then ev1 else and you're guaranteed a kill lol

I am totally in love love with this game have been for two years. I have only dabbled in other MMO's becasue nothing can compare. Costume design uniqueness, gameplay, roleplay, and even PvP is really fun. Though the game was not orignally designed with PvP so it has its flaws.

Well its not so much that loot and gear that matters but there is some imbalance in the the powersets themselves. In CoH/V you don't need the cool new invetion stuff to be competitive but it helps. The real PvP in CoH is team PvP, its awesome. Since the powersets are designed to be played together (But they are all able to run solo if need be) team PvP in COH/V is truely awesome. Super fast paced tons of action. I like it because you don't have to keep your gear up, so you can still be competitive even if you don't have much time to play.

yeah this game is onfire with balance issues in regards to PvP. some say villains are balanced but heroes are not. some SGs like FoL now advocate villain vs villain pvp but not sure if they got other Villian groups to participate much (PvP Arena boards)

good vids from an FoL member. will give u a feel for the action. u can get balanced pvp to happen if u do hero vs hero or villain vs villain.

bottomline make sure u enjoy the PvE in this game. dont sub just for the PvP cause u gotta farm PvE for the best loot. so if u cant stomach the PvE this is not your game it caters to their PvE fan base overall

Hoping WAR will put an end to this discrimination pvpers get

I played CoH/CoV for about a year and a half.  Here are the big things I'll point of for anyone thinking of trying it out.

    1) If you're into loot / gear, then this game will be a shock for you.  There is no gear in the typical sense.  And the only loot that drops are Inspirations (1 time use items, similar to potions), Enhancements (items used to increase the effectiveness of your powers), Recipes (new to I9, and used to make different kinds of enhancements, and Salvage (used for various things, but mostly to create base items and enhancements).  So, as I said, if you're into loot this game may not be for you.  If you're looking for a change from the usual loot / gear grinds then this may be just for you.

    2) Take what you know about group combat and place it hold.  While yes the typical Tank - Healer - DPS combos do hold true to CoH, this game allows for more expansion and versatility of the usual stand-by teams.  It is entirely possible to clear difficult missions without having a dedicated healer.  It all depends on what archetypes (ATs) you bring.   As someone suggested, it is a very good idea to play all the classes to around level 10 to get a feel for them.  Oh and one last thing, do not (I can't emphasize this enough) pigeon hole ATs to one role.  You'll be sorry if you do.

    3) Advancement is not difficult and is pretty straight forward.  Though the devs have been trying to add in more unique missions types, they are still all pretty much the same.  There are 4 main types of mission, defeat everyone in the building (instance), defeat a certain someone and his personal minions, free certain people from a certain someone (and sometimes escort them out), or find and retrieve a certain item.  So yeah the missions can be repetitive, which sucks.  That combined with the fact that; at least in CoH, this has been corrected for the most part in CoV; the contacts send you to opposite ends of the city all the friggin time, means you'll usually be spending more time traveling than fighting in the instance.  Which brings up the next point.

    4) Costumes and Travel powers alone are worth checking this game out.  The entire "superhero" and "villain" premise is played out nicely with the costumes and travel powers.  The costume creator is amazing, and unless you do it intentionally, finding someone identical to you will be nigh impossible.  Travel powers are a blast.  You can fly like Superman, Superjump like the Hulk, ran at Superspeed like the Flash, and Teleport like Nightcrawler.  I can't say it enough, I sooooooo missed travel powers when I started playing other MMOs.

    5) End game content is iffy currently.  I haven't played since I9 hit, so I can't speak for that.  But before I left there was only 1 end game raid, PvP, and some rather lame repeatable missions available once you completed all your usual missions.  So basically when you hit 50, that was it, your character gets shelved, and you make a new one.  Your new character then starts the whole process over.  It's possible to most all the content with 3-4 characters (only things you'll miss out on is some of the starter origin stuff).  This kinda bothered me.  I didn't like the fact that my level 50 Blaster didn't get play much after I hit 50.

Well that's about all of my opinion on this game.  All and all CoH and CoV are worth checking out.  They're fun games that have a lot of offer.   Hope it helps.

I tried the 14 day free trial a couple of weeks ago and i really enjoyed it. TBH i'd written the game off just because with all the super hero movies etc and it being a super hero game i figured it was just trying to get a slice of the comic book comeback...

I loved being able to customise my char and you can pretty much make it look however you want as far as costumes go and then it extends to the skills you have. I liked walking around and saving oap's from thugs to grind xp... it's a feel good game :)

The instances and mobs were pretty repetitive but i didn't seem to mind as much because i enjoyed the way i killed them as i'd chosen the method. Finding groups was ok, i was surprised how busy it was, although they aren't necessarily needed as you can set the difficulty in instances.

A couple of things i didn't like was that i found it hard to locate quests i could do besides the main ones... constantly picking up new enhancements became a chore to organise them... and i think thats it.

Not a hardcore game in my opinion, just something thats fun to play a couple of hours of when you're short of things to do.

Certainly one to try though ;)

So far I almost like the game.  It is very simplistic.

    What I Like:

Areas designed for particular levels.  Hard to get in over your head as long as you are in the right area.

    Public Badges

Victor Recognition for Day, Yesterday, Month, and Last Month.  (I'm vain)

Being able to completely revamp the look of your toon (costume and physical features)

Mission progression suited to your level.

No heavy duty twinking needed.  Easy to have a toon that can easily take on things in the level field without having to have an ultra rare item or spending tons of "credits" buying things.

    The Global market system

    What I don't Like:

Almost too Team oriented...  I like to solo

    Not enough levels...   50????

Mindless killing of mobs who are basically all the same from level to level.

getting rooted... I HATE THAT...  <lol>

I am a veteran on MMPOG's.  Started with Ulitma Online in 1998.  I have played a lot of them.  Asherons Call, Anarchy Online (which I also beta'd and still play now), Motor City Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Earth & Beyond (beta'd and played on release).

City Of Heroes/Villains has people of all ages playing it.  But is way too Disneyfied.  I am not a person to use profane language, but I think it is complete crap to type "Wow, This Crap sucks".. and have it transmitted as "Wow, This <!bleep> sucks".  Especially considering some of the female costumes you can (and I have) design are quite "sexy".
