The playerbase is fairly small compared to most MMo's. But its been small for the longest of times.

As far as the game closeing down.  Doubtfull.    The playerbase is small, but its also a fairly loyal and mature fanbase of the game.   Not to mention that they draw a 2nd source of revenue for the game from in game ads from free players.    I wouldn't see anything drawing the player base away  from the game anytime soon.  Unless another Sci-Fi comes out that has a similar playstyle, character management, and community that seems to florish in AO.

The lower level playerbase is a lot higher than it was when I used to play. Opening up the first 100 levels (?) as a free game was really smart. When I came back to try it, the place was so much more crowded (and alive) because of it.

    200 free lvls

have to run around a bit to get help at around 4-8 am gmt, but otherwise there's plenty of people playing.

lvl 60 is fairly easy to get to and it'll give you an idea of the proffessions (classes) and of the skills system and well things.

Playing for free does limit your options for things to do, but I liked it when I started guess I've just gotten used to having the expansions for variety along the way.

Try and live in the city Borealis for a while, nice helpfull people there :)

Its a very good game, if you can get past the inital learning curve.  When I first bought the game, I played it for 30 mintues, put it down for 8 months and tried it again when I was dead bored.  Got past the learning curve and could not put it down.  Very good game design, and you wont find a more mature player base anywhere on the internet.

Has player housing improved much? It was very minimal when I was in the game.

Im glad they have finally made an APF for under 150 toons on this next patch- oh and multiple hotbars ftw, tho they are making life for agents so much easier, hopefully they will get a nerf in the next patch :)
