Thinking about playing

privatep37privatep37 Member Posts: 111

I'm an SWG vet looking for a game like SWG used to be. Still none. I never game across Ryzom until today and was wondering about its gameplay. How do you progress, skill or level? Are there classes, professions? IS it fun? PLayer housing? Mounts/vehicles? in general does it come close to being like SWG used to be before it got messed up?

thanks, any help is appreciated.

Favourite Game

We have quite a few SVG vets in our ranks.

You progress freely, lvling whatyou want. There are no classes. You can be as multiclass as you like.

Forage and craft are more complex and interesting than in any othergame so quite naturally almost all players practice it at least to some extent.

It is tons of fun. Players can have apartments which differ in design depending on race.  There are mecktoub (like a lean elephant) mounts and packers.

I never played SWG myself but those SWG refugees i met say that it does.

Here's a nice guild that can guide you through and make your playtime a real  treat: forums.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php

it's a skill based game, and yes it is actually fun . the only housing there is instanced, there are mounts, and it's not quite how swg once was, but it's a good game on it's own.

this is my second time in ryzom, the first was right after the CU in swg, and quite frankly i expected too much out of ryzom, i WANTED it to fill the void that swg left, and it was just a little too different for me.. skip one year later... playing it again, and not WANTING it to be swg anymore i've been enjoying it MUCH more. i've never really been all that into harvesting and crafting in any mmo, i've been more of a melee dps player, but i've been leveling up desert foraging for about 3 weeks now solid, and still enjoying digging.

this game has an awesome community, and it is HIGHLY advisable to find yourself a guild with like minded people and let them help you trek and give you the in game advice that you will so greatly need

the trial is free, and it's certainly worth trying, but keep in mind it is NOT swg and leave the expectations of it being so out before you play.

if there's anything i can do for you please give me a hoot ingame.

Hey I was a 34 month vet of SWG that left last August for Ryzom! There are plenty of old SWG players here. The game play is skill based and you can even build your own skills in this game. The player housing is instanced and only you can be in your Apartment and they are not furnishable. There are mounts and also packers. If you are looking for  a sandbox game, then this game is for you. Well there are different professions in the game, it starts out with only 4 to begin with and branches out at intervals I.E. you start out as Combat and branch out to ranged, two handed, and one handed melee. The end of the branches for melee you break down into the different weapons as in one handed sword master or two handed sword master and so on. I hope this helps also DL the trail and see for yourself.

3 weeks ago, I had done the 10 days WOW trial. It kind left me on a neutral appreciation.

1 week ago, I had started playing the Ryzom trial. I liked it.

5 days ago, I had started the Everquest-II 7 days trial (the Fae one). I am amazed at how high you can go on graphics (specular, reflection, dynamic shadows, ...). In 2 days, I was blocked because the trial didn't allow past level-10. I tried with another character but then, started geting boring because its the same thing all over I have to go through. Also, because I had almost no choices at all to pick a character. Overall, hummm, I don't know. Kinda got bored.

So that's why now, I am thinking about going back on the Ryzom trial. I realy liked it. I love having freedom of choice. To me its closer to real life then being restricted to a specific class where I have to go with specific skills. Having freedom of choice, I could develop my character toward one way but then later, decide to go otherwise and still keep my character and everything I gathered so far.  Ok, the graphic isn't as far as what I have seen in Everquest 2 (tried the extream settings to see but I was lagging like hell. It was fun to see. I had to play with Best Performance). But there is something in Ryzom which even in graphics, I cannot find in EQ2.

Anyway, I am going back to Ryzom to start new characters to experiment on skills and maybe going to full subscriptions after.

By the way, Ryzom has no retail box ANYWHERE ? Its only via downloads ? I like keeping the original box of my games for when I have to re-install everything (either that or do another image).

So I would have to say, go with the trial first. Unlimited time for the trial is prety good.
    welcome aboard.

there's something very alive about atys that's near impossible to put your finger on. whether it's the ai, the weather, seasons, or the people playing, all of the above or none of the above i don't know, but atys just the same is a world.

and no there's no box, as far as i know, it's only available via download, if you want to have it to reinstall later you just have to redownload it, OR.. i'm not sure of the size of the game directory but i know i relocated my game directory and it still plays for me so maybe you can just copy the directory onto a dvd or throw it on a spare slave drive.

    Hello homin,

i agree, Atys is a true living world, no matter how much sophisticated is the graphics. Anyway, considering the age of the game, the graphic is really awesome.

Take a look at some screenies (some are very old but many are almost new), considering i shooted them with an ATI 9800, so not so new, using only 64MB textures with everything else at max settings:

    s157.photobucket.com/albums/t56/Gilgameesh/Ryzom/

About the box, there were one at release (i have it) but, due to so many changes, it should not work anymore... A friend of mine found it on Internet but i suggest to ignore it and use the downloader from the main site.

Finally, i can confirm that you can simply backup the directory in any place you want. You can also split it to store in different places, just make sure you restore the whole directory before relogging. It will work with no problems.

You can also save the registry if you want, but it's totally unnecessary. Anyway, if you want to do, execute regedit.exe and go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Nevrax  right click on the folder and choose 'export' then save the file with a reasonable name

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Nevrax  right click on the folder and choose 'export' then save the file with a reasonable name

Backup the two .REG files in the same way you backup your main Ryzom installation.

To restore the registry settings, simply double click the .REG files and apply the modifications.

I have no knowledge of Vista, so consider this only valid on XP/2000 systems.

NB: If you don't want to backup the whole game, make sure to backup regularly at least the 'save' folder, that contains all your UI preferences, your keybindings and, most important, your ingame landmarks.
