Well, the way it works is that SOE sets a number.. say 5000 for say Starsider that has to be hit before is says Full or Heavy. So, if SOE wants they can change that number to say 1500 it still says Heavy or full.
So, since we cant check the numbers like we used to(til they fixed that method in the launchpad) seeing it say "heavy" means nothing. We have no clue if Heavy is 1000 or 6000.
Until they release their numbers we are free to think the worst of them; that's the cost of secrecy.
But for a moment let's assume heavy means heavy.
The last two publishes are the first time they are doing what players actually want; they are also doing mostly what I have told them to do for the past year and a half; plus it is the start of the summer which is a good time for all MMOs.
It's nice to see however, when they finally do the right thing, the positive results are dramatic. Imagine how good things might have been had they never chosen to screw thier customers?
I always wanted the game to succeed. SOE is the one who has acted as if they want to fail. For the first time since the NGE, with the last two Chapters, they are beginning to behave as they should. That's a good thing.
I'll be the first to admit that this is impressive for post-NGE. But SoE has made a disposable game out of SWG. It's too generic now, which means people can and will simply leave when the next best kill, rinse, repeat style of game comes along. Just imagine what a Starcraft MMO would do to the population of SWG right now. I'd bet it would be decimated far worse then just after the release of the NGE.
You do notice it's the medium servers that are "recommended". Pre-CU it would be the lightest and nearest. I call BS in the numbers game.
Yeah, back in the day, medium populated servers would not show up as recommended, as they would likely hit "heavy" during their prime time. Also keep in mind that many players have been migrating from the empty servers to the more populated ones. SOE is even considering offering free transfers in the future to accelerate the process, to gear up for a reduction in the number of open servers. I remember when they were offering free transfers from Bria to reduce the stress caused by the number of people playing on it. Now it is news when Bria hits heavy.
But hey, everything looks like an improvement when you have lower standards.
Can you say: 'Light"? most are still light... besides that, Bria, Bloodfin and Chilastra have always been one of the more crowded servers. (especially Bria) so.. its not really that impressive..
and like the others already mentioned you still don't know how many people are on a 'Heavy' for real
Indeed -- far from impressive, in an absolute sense, but relative to the past year it is an improvement., if it is accurate. As I said before, in that they choose to hide thier numbers under the rug I think everyone is entitled to think the worst of them.
I really hate to burst bubbles. But the nge is still the same, true they may be putting CH's in there in some form but its not the same. Its too little too late. The only way i could see them redeeming themselves is if they turned it all the way back to pre-cu. Which I don't see happening.

It should be noted that Ahazi, Bria, and from what I hear Chilastra (or maybe it's Corbantis) are the unofficial reroll/transfer servers, meaning those three or four are we're other server players go to die.
Population (according to friends) on Ahazi is up, but other servers continue to drop.
Edit: Recommended server listings were done on purpose to steer new players towards the most populated servers, which for a game entering it's fourth year online (regardless of changes), is probably a wise idea.
I don't see whats special? Can somebody clue me in here? Is 20 light servers a good thing? What am I missing here? Do people have work or school on sundays? Anybody? Plz help me.
Yeah, they changed the numbers a long time ago, I currently play on Bria, and it will say Heavy, but in no way is there the same amount of people on now.
Back in the day before NGE, Bria was the only server offering free charachter transfers to go to another server. every day the Server was on HEAVY traffic. You' go to theed or dantoine mining outpost and there would have to be about 150-200 people there. You could not go any where withou running into some one, now, you can actually go hours without ever seeing a single person.
Now yes at times you see about half that much in Restus during busy hour. But there is no way in hell that there is the same amount of traffic on the server.
Another game's doing great Thread... Come play it... Blue skies are going to clear up. Put on a happy face thread in the veteran area.
How many times does this community continue to have to remind posters we left over the CU and NGE. That we don't particularly care for the games mechanics and combat system?
These types of posts serve absolutely no purpose and are meant for nothing but annoying this area.
I wouldn't support our side hopping to the other board and posting screen shots of how great Pre-CU was and I'd really appreciate it if the NGE folks would do the same.
As other people said, define heavy otherwise this is just blatant flaming.
Dear god. This is perhaps (and i say perhaps because if you can say something as stupid and misinformed and downright insensitive a thing like this) the worst comparison you could make.
Grow up for christ sake. Comparing people who simply don't like the game to a hate group shows a staggering level of stupidity and immaturity.
Attack of The Street Pimps! Can you dig it? Can you count sucka's?
I have seen the servers busier than that in the last few weeks.
Secondly :
I am not concerned about how many players are playing, i am in a nice guild that has events on all week that keep me quite entertained and busy.
Besides the free server transfers are coming up soon and alot of people from the light servers will move over and this will solve alot of the "population" problems for some. so in reality it is not a huge problem.
Infact with each publish i see more and more people online, the population is not increasing dramaticly, but compared to a few months ago i am sure it must have more than doubled already.
The game is in far better shape than it has been in for a long while, and for a change there are less bugs than even in pre cu, if SOE keeps things up at this rate and release a good expansion next year i am sure the rest will come running back at light speed.
everyday there are more and more topics apearing of vets returning, and some of these vets were also the worse flamers around at one point.

Proof please, thanks.
Why? You have been around long enough that you know these back and forth server population discussions go NOWHERE!
There's a tremendous problem with going by the screen shot. SOE had made many changes to reflect what they felt was Light, Medium and Heavy over the last few years. Heavy now is *NOT* Heavy like it was in 2005.
What are the actuall numbers...?
I recall something that identified SWG's servers having a maximum concurent user limit of 3500, with Bria being 5000. Is this true? I cannot confirm it. (I believe World of Warcraft's servers are capped at 2500 concurent users per server)
I've logged into the game thrice over the last 2 weeks at varrying times. Once on an early saturday morning (6am), once on a Friday evening and again right after downtime. On all occasions the server status showed Bria as "Heavy" even though when I had logged in right after dt I saw a few posts in guild chat "how long has the server been up?"
People are playing it, but in NO WAY should a lable give any reason to dictate a belief of success nor the actuall population.
p.s. Back in the day the server's showed many other statistics beside "light, medium, heavy".

Hey, my old server is still around...
Umm, topic, right.
Umm, what does 'heavy' actually mean in terms of numbers?
It could just be the load on the servers, which could just mean the heamster committed suicide out of boredom.
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.
So, since we cant check the numbers like we used to(til they fixed that method in the launchpad) seeing it say "heavy" means nothing. We have no clue if Heavy is 1000 or 6000.
Waste of posts..../sigh

I was just going to say I guess 3 heavy servers don't help out the people on the 17 light servers

Wow. 3 Heavy servers. I hereby renounce all my loathing for the NGE.
Wait, 17 light ones. Back to hating the NGE
Still, nice try.

Nice argument, comparing a legitimate group of everyday people to the KKK. I mean wow, I totally see the similarities now!
