Hello all,
I am trying to decide if I want to buy and play LOTRO. I played the beta or rather I played the first instanced character creation adventure during my beta trial, unfortunately my system couldn't handle the real game (I have a new computer now). The instanced little adventure was fun, I played the elf and human beginnings.
But here is the problem, I have played several different games/demos over the years (WOW, COH/COV, DAoC9[d], EQ2, Puzzle Pirates, Rose Online) and after the initial excitement wore off I became bored with the repetition (fedex quests and kill X quests) and it became very difficult to solo.
That is the other thing, I like to solo. It fits my personality and schedule. I like having the option to join a group to complete a quest but I don't want to be told I must join a group to advance beyond level 20.
So do you think I should buy LOTRO?
Comments
I imagine you could solo enough to progress, through various repetitive go kill x wolves quests and grinding, but you'll be missing out on alot. The whole fellowship thing seems to be important.
Then again, I say yes.
Its the only way to know for sure
I might even have a keycode you can use for 30 free days if i can talk my fella into parting with it. We both bought the game and he never activated his... prob never will. I'll have to see tomorrow, bed time now :P
Just answering you straight
Bite me, Turbine.
If you play the mechanics, the gameplay, I suppose it is like others. If you play the GAME instead, it's unique. If you visit the main site and look at the screenshots and features, you still won't get much of a feel for the overall attention to detail and general excellence. And most importantly, it's fun!
It's like a great chef's dish; same ingredients, but something superb. But if you order by the ingredients rather than the end result, you might miss something.
If the fit, finish, and feel of a car were superb, would you not buy it just because the steering wheel and pedals were in the same old locations?

Playing: Final Fantasy Online: ARR, Destiny
Most memorable games for me: UO, GW1, LoTRO
I think I got bored because there was nothing for me to do during the "down" time between quests in WOW. That and I was sick of the juvenile behavior of a few players who kept going on and on about inane topics (a certain american martial artist for example). It got so bad on my server that I had to turn off the general chat, which effectively cut me off.
I am not a very social person, however I enjoy "hearing" the general chatter of my fellow gamers and I do contribute to the conversation every once in awhile. I know alot of people would say that there is no point in playing a mmorpg if you don't take part in any group activities. And I understand that argument, the reason I play a mmorpg is to relax after work and take part in an experience. Perhaps I am not a vocal member of the community (in game) but I like to be able to go online (however briefly) and feel connected to other people who are taking part in a game/event.
I have joined guilds and gone on raids, played pvp, etc. But I usually end up not playing enough to satisfy the guilds and get kicked out. I have a busy life in the "real world" and can't devote the time that everyone seems to think I should to the games.
All that being said I will probably still give the game a try, I like what I have read of the minigames and socialization. Perhaps I will be wasting my money <shrug>, I will let you know.

I have a similar playing style to you (OP). I'm not on that long, maybe a hour or two a night (if that), and I am having a blast!
From the chat I have seen on my server (windfola) for the most part it is pretty mature. They even have an advice channel that has been nice.
Heck get a buddy key and give it a try.
I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.
I like the game because it has a lot of stuff in it but none of it feels like a grind like you get in other games. The reason I think it has a better community is generally Fanboy's are young and impressionable. They've been told WoW is so great for so long they know it for fact and wont try the game. Therefore you get the more mature crowd (generally) who is willing to try other games and know that WoW isn't the only kid on the block.
EVE - Sharvala
FFXI - Shazamalicious
Guild Wars - Xavier Lucifer & Charlize the Necro

i woldnt play that game.
i dont wana play it
i think that lord of the rings shold not be in an online world.
Lets work.
I bought the game about 2 weeks ago. Played for 5-6 days and got bored. The graphics are alright, though graphics dont make a game. I am sorry i bought this game, very dissapointed with it to be honest. I find myself leveling to 10 then getting bored. I blamed the class and area, so started a new class in a different area, still got bored. Maybe it is just me, but i have read alot of posts similar. I would get a trial, deffinatly wouldnt fork out the cash for the game.
"Should i play?"
Ask yourself that question. If you think you should, buy it. If you think you shouldnt, dont buy it. If you are not sure, i wouldnt bother.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
I have had to many problems with teaming. People who leech, people who haven't learned how to play the class or profession they have chosen (especially healers), it is always something. It has gotten to the point in Online gaming that if Solo'ing isn't an option for 90% of the game, I am probably not going to like it.
Well...
I joined up and so far I am having fun. Yeah I am sure I can burn out on this game but there is one thing this game has over WOW, DDO, Guild Wars, etc. And that is a history beyond the game, meaning -that since this is based on novels that have been around for over 50 years- there is a familiarity with the setting and characters that none of the other games can have.
And the novels weren't fluff, they were well researched and detailed books which allows the designers to delve fully into writing a background history.
Anyway, I am on the Gladden server. I am not very far in, just over 5th level so if someone wants to recommend a server to me feel free.
My characters are:
Riordan of Gondor (Man Guardian)
Serigil (Female elf Champion)
Thinking of playing a Hobbit character or Elf Hunter....Who knows

First, the server isn't full of hardcore roleplayers, so you don't have to worry about that; there are as many non-rpers as rpers. The difference is that the roleplay that does exist draws you into the game more. Whether it is just chatter amongst folks, or a player-run event... it brings more life to the game. Landroval has a great, active community... one of the best I've ever been apart of in all of the MMOs I've played. The people are friendly, mature and fun... and there are plenty of kinships to choose from, if you're into that sort of thing.
Finally, if all you do is run quests and grind away, yeah, you probably will get bored. But if you take the time to get to know some folks, go explore the world, stop at the various Inns and cities known to have roleplay... you'll find many more things to do to make the game more enjoyable for you.
i thought that this game was ok when i was lucky enough to have gotten into the beta part.
However, i did find the game to get very boring at times, and even found myself thinking, should i play it or shouldnt i. This and only 2/3 weeks into the game. However, i did feel i would have purchased and paid for this game, untill they released the monthly price, which completly put me off £9.49 a mth, just too much for a game that has a naff crafting system, no PvP and an above average quest system. Those are the 3 things i look for in a game, though not in that order.
If the monthly price ever came down, i may consider goign for it, but that will never happen, so i doubt i will be hitting this game.
I know some people will say £2-£2-50 a month more isnt a big deal, but when you have other bills to pay one does have to be careful and put what one thinks is worth paying for, and £9.49 a month was certainly a tad bit too much for me. (and i know several others too). £7 maybe.
Just my 2 pence worth there and my opinion.
if you like Tolkein stuff you'll probably love this game. Otherwise its too similar to others on the market and you'll probably feel the burn out quickly. A lot say its like WoW, i quit that shortly after the honor system though, so I'm not much help there. but to me it feels a lot like EQ2, just not as fleshed out (that game has come a long ways).
Give it a try though because maybe its the next mmo you're looking for. For me at level 43 the game just felt way too easy (yes, even the upper level fellowship dungeons). Also the leveling is too quick. I'm not a power leveler but gaining levels in this game is extremely easy, even as a captain. I see people say to take your time and enjoy the journey. I tryed that, when you give me 20% of my level for one quest its too much. I dont know how many quests i simply just abandoned because they turned grey on me. I think this comes down to the fact that i was never really that into LOTR. i like the books dont get me wrong; just not a die hard fan. Where as that die hard fan probably did those grey quests and loved every minute of how that quest tied into the lore. Another plus for the game is Turbine seems very intent (more so than any company as of late) on making regular updates for the game. Housing is coming along with a lot of other neat things that the players will love. Infact the first free expansion comes out this weekand. I myself am going to give the game some more of my time.. at least until this months sub is up.. to try and grab me. Otherwise it looks like I'm going to be MMO'less again for a while
I see know reason why they won't add quite a few quests for 45-50 in a bit.

I'm well aware of the quests being added by Evendim. However, I just feel that these are more to fill the hole that exists for those trying to level their character through the 30's than to support actual solo play. After you leave Archet (Man side) the amount of the storyline you can progress through drops dramatically (excluding those parts where you go find the person you need to continue on with a particular Book or Chapter).
To the OP the answer is :-
If you have time to waste then you can have an enjoyable mindless ramble (no real challenge in this game at all) then YES
If you have a life then don't bother NO

Sorcery must persist, the future is the Citadel
I've had the same question as you when i first bought the game and people were telling me that the game isnt solo friendly. This is true pretty much after lv 10, (its hard not to see on the lff channel "lff Lalia or bone man" in Bree or sumthing like that) but after i joined a couple of fellowships, I made a lot of friends. Everytime i log in, theyd always ask if i needed help with a a quest or sumthing.. this also became evident after a joined a guild. And usually if u had a quest that needs party, i'd usually just go to the area that i need to go to and find a handful of people who are trying to do the same quest..... group play is never really a problem on my server... (i play on Elendilmir by the way..... lv 20 captain atm).. so, even if i only have like an hour or so, group quests are finished in 20-30 mins and much faster with more members. And about the questing, its the same kill x and take to y, but what drives me to do the quests are the lore behind it. As wolfpack said, the game is based on books that have been around for 50 years or so. I, having read the books, was compelled to see how turbine has created the world, and i think theyve done a great job, (and to think its just Eriador as of now ).
I say Yes- if you like the books and you wanna give the game a chance and see if you wanna give group play a shot
No- if you are'ent convinced with what is said (these are just my opinions :P)
BTW free content update coming soon and I havent even tried monster play yet :P (pvp ftw!)
