Phylon is one of the newest additions to our Game List, and Managing Editor Jon Wood caught up with DJ Cassel (Creative Director) and Tracy Spaight (Chief Operating Officer) to get an introduction to the game.
MMORPG.com:
What genre of MMORPG is Phylon?DJ Cassel:Phylon is a 3rd person Sci-Fi RPG shooter, with a first person targeting option. The game blends together elements from multiple genres.
Phylon is somewhat akin to Quake with its arenas, which are instanced death match zones. The winners of arenas are tallied and displayed on the website for all the bragging rights owed. If a player tops the leader board and is a member of one of the eight factions, then everyone in his or her faction will gain special ability perks for as long as one their own can hold on to the top slot.
Outside the Arenas, on the surface of the planet Anura, Phylon is closer to a traditional role-playing game. The player's character can gain in level and experience through questing and hunting the creatures on the planet's surface. As a player quests, the character will not only become more powerful but the selection of available weapons, armor and equipment will increase. These newly obtained items can then in turn be used to compete for the top slot in future arenas.

EDIT
"We invite readers to check out our new website, download the Phylon beta client, and make up their own minds."
Well, I did have a look. I saw some new things, on their company site [http://www.rapidrealitystudios.com/products.html] at least. But the Phylon website is stuck with a COMING SOON sticker. [http://www.phylon-online.com/] Where, I inquire, would one go to download this beta? Not impressive...
Something to me just seems so awesome about playing an armed frog, or an obese blog with multiple eyes. I am sensing the dev team has a ton of humor, and I think I will give this a shot if my computer can run it.
Edit: IN response to the poster above me, I think they are just updating their website. I was on the Phylon website just fine the other day. I beleive the beta is available through Fileplanet if you are a subscriber.
Yes:
It was that same time I got fired.
The original Design of Phylon would've actually been lots of fun to play. The design was being changed behind the designer's backs to fit the art being produced without creative direction or instruction, during that time the Lead Designer quit. Then one of the 2 Designers (me) were fired by the Art-Leads gone Producer, gone Designers.
Sure enough, you won't find my name on the Credits, nor the Lead Designer who quit...
Yet, even through all this, I recomend everybody try Phylon anyways. The worst thing that can happen is that you don't like it and are out a little bit of time.

"When people tell me designing a game is easy, I try to get them to design a board game. Most people don't last 5 minutes, the rest rarely last more then a day. The final few realize it's neither fun nor easy."
"Earlier this spring, we emailed everyone in the preorder database to explain the change in management and creative direction. We offered our customers a full refund or access to the Phylon beta, a free copy of the game, and two months of free game play post-launch.'
Funny, I never got any e-mails.
Had to create a beta account when it became available. No free time offered to me, and I'm betting there are others who "slipped through the grand canyon- sized cracks" of RR's customer relations. The game is a joke. If I want to read dialogue from old movies, I'll watch the movies. The graphics are nowhere near acceptable for a new game, but that's my personal opinion. Don't know how the PvP is, because I didn't bother getting past the plagiarization involved in the npc dialog, the lackluster atmoshere, and clumsy controls.
The company itself is a joke for trying to make believe they made everything okay concerning the lies and deception concerning all things involving The Chronicle. Tracy is as full of it now as he was then.
My last word: try it for yourself, but don't expect anything past mediocre in all aspects of this game.
Anyways the graphics are fine its a small company give them a break they arent blizzard and they aren't charging 15 a month as blizzard does.
dj is a prick though if its still the same loser

Newest addition?
This game came out @#$&ing seven years ago!
They just slapped on a new name and rehashed the same damn game. Why do we continually reward underhanded behavior with praise?
All the MMO News Worth Caring About
Your website's FAQ states that in relation to PvP, "any player has the ability to fight just as well as a veteran at any time based on their reflexes and skill." This would seem to imply a twitch combat system. Can you tell us how combat works in Phylon?
Phylon is a fast-paced shooter. Players of level 5 or higher can engage in PvP. In a fire-fight, skill and character level determine the outcome. Of course the more experienced character will be armed with better equipment and have more hit points, but in the end it still comes down the better player.
No, it doesn’t. Not even in the slightest. This is no FPS, and no, skill will have nothing to do with it if there are to hit rolls, and increased health, armor, and BETTER guns.

Back in June 2005 I had entered into an agreement with Rapid Reality for the MMOCenter subscription service, the first two games would be The Chronicle and Machines. That pre-order $ 20 carried many benefits that would have applied to the MMOCenter subscription service and a unique in-game item for The Chronicle.
I opted not for the refund out of principle. And applying it to "Pylon" with two free months was not appealing either. Neither would equate to the benefits that $ 20 would have brought (and $ 20 now is less than $ 20 of 2 years ago).
I replied to that e-mail asking for a third option . . . . still waiting. Certainly a company with a name of "Rapid Reality" will create another game, especially since they boasted about 1 gig of artwork for The Chronicle (there has to be a significant amount of transferrable work to their Aura Engine).

Probably shouldnt have taken me 10 seconds to figure that out, but hey, to each there own.
I'm Awesome, Deal With It.
