Just started playing again a few days ago and.....

A friend has continued to play since the game has come out. I quite 2-3 years ago. A few days ago I puchased the game again, told my friend I was coming back and stated the game up. I have to say I am somewhat Disappointed.

There was no bad blood when I left the game, I just got to busy and was ready for something new after playing for 2 years or so. The thing I noticed right off the bat was that no one was running around Windy. I walked through 3 zones and saw one person. I quickly ran to the AH to see 3 people afk selling and 2 people shopping. I took a quick look on the AH and saw that there might be a total of all the swords in the game 3 for sale. Same with armor.

This can't be I thought. It must just be this city, so a made an alt in another city to find much the same thing. I was a little put off to say the least. This meant I would not be able to buy any weapons or armor, and that there was pretty much no way to make money since so few people were buying.

I desided to wait till my friend logged in, so I ran outside and lvl'ed alittle. I then did a global search of all lvl 3-20. I got 3 names, including my own. This was on a weekend. Which is obviously very sad, since it means there is no one to lvl with. Since FFxi is a group based game this pretty much ensured I would not be playing anymore.

My friend finally logged on. I asked him about it, he said most people were lvl 75 and doing high lvl missions. I knew he had been lvling a DRK and asked him how he was doing it with no parties and how he was getting equipment. He said he was soloing, and had created many characters so he could craft basic equipment. This really put me off, I did not want to grind to 60 and onward to find people to party with, and I did not want to have to farm for hours upon hours just to get the material I need to make basic gear, since no one would be buying anything I am selling.

I found all of this hard to believe. Has FF really dropped that much in population? Even with WoW getting older and many, many people having capped chars the world is populated with people's alts and new people of every lvl. I was just very sad. I was looking foward to coming back, but not like this.

Has anyone else had this problem? Or anything to say pro or con? Or maybe a server that has a high low lvl population. Though I hate to abandon my friend.

Oh man that's horrible. I was thinking of starting up FFXI for the first time, but I don't want to start playing a game ONLINE in which I'm one of the only people playing. How borring is that. If there are servers with lots of people playing then maybe it'll get me to start playing, but hearing this kind of news makes me not want to just yet. I do hope I can start playing it sometime soon and have a good experience within the game. Well, good luck to you and your friend on finding a server that actually has people in it, and tell me if you do.

I've played many games, and the ones that I play change weekly. Currently I am very interested in Gunbound, Poker, and Kwon Ho once more. I am thinking of returning to Maple Story and Ghost Online.

The game doesn't have an incredibly small population like that. There are many servers and you probably just chose one that hardly anybody is on. Actually, I read a while ago that they are adding a thing that will let you choose your server and transfer characters from one server to another. You should just wait until then and you and your friend can transfer your characters to a populated server. I forget which server I played on a few months ago but it was almost all low level players. Everything was populated until I started to get into the level 30+ areas and then it became empty pretty quick. Your friend could just change to a different job for the moment and level that up with you.

agreed, this is one of the few games you can play with a PS2, a PC and a 360.... and there's always people running around when i play. Some people stop me in my tracks... and ask for help, or where to go, or if i want to team up with them as they fetch their friends.

Unfortunetly you don't get into the storyline until well into the game, but on the plus side once you get addicted again... getting there will be a lot of fun.

just find a server that's good, and you're all set to go.

Damn I don't know what server you're on, but that's horrible. Unicorn has no such problems. There's plenty of low level players/jobs on at all times.

Problem is that you are in the starting city, most players are in Jeuno or Aht Urhgan and selling stuff there. You only come to starting cities if you need a quest or for crafting purposes.

I m on Shiva , Asura , and Phoenix .. I d said Asura has the best the community and probly the lowest prices of 3. On Phoenix , Sandy about a month again had pretty empty AHs (crystals were 300 gil for a stack after the account bans). Generally speaking Phoenix has the worst community I ve been to.

10-50 is very slow on Phoenix, you can go days without seeing whm , and the rdms got sticks up there collective butts about main healing. The saving grace for Phoenix is the Japanese community while most wont party with you if you roll a dark or drg , you can often get into a party that last 9 hours or more.

Phoenix also has aton of PL / RTM groups running, normally 3 pl , 3 ninjas and whatever job they Pling ,they often perfer DD types but they work like a machine. While its dancing with the devil , its often times 1 lvl per hour , they could with endless resources.

Asura has a really good community , most of the people I ve met have gone out there way to help. The problem is 5pm US time is dead air time , not much people on. But around lunch time there is a strong German/French/ European community which are often times newer players who dont mind helping you.

The parties 10-40 are generally slow , average wait for a non mage is 5 hour in the dunes , quifm varies but longest my thief waited for 3 hours.  Garbage and Crawlers/Desert is bit slower , Rdm and whm get instant invites post 30.

Shiva I only static with friends from the old days , damn people went and had families , wives and such. So they only allowed out of certain weekends or certain days. We normally do 2 hours of lvling , and I mine zinic so they dont fall behind money wise. Shiva was hit pretty hard by RTM so AH are fubar,  but its one of the most exciting shopping servers I ve been to.

Several known RTM there will pawn off astral rings for 150k , and you can find amazing deals on armor and food. I got +1 squid sushi stack for 7k and got a lvl 18 Flame sword for 8.6k on  bazzar.

As far as the community , I havent really interacted with many people, just the people farming zinic and soot for ninja quest. So far most of the high lvls give you advise but dont go "ZOMG newbie why are you using XX"

I'm on Remora, and any time I log in, there's people in the cities, people levelling even in the Dunes...no lack of people I've seen. I levelled WAR and NIN with pickup parties in the Dunes last weekend and gained a total of eight levels, no trouble getting parties at all.

Thank you for replying. It is good to know that not all of the servers are going down. The last thing I want to do is run around on a server with 1k people at peak times. I will check out the servers you guys mentioned, thanks agian.

    True, it doesn't

Actually, I read a while ago that they are adding a thing that will let you choose your server and transfer characters from one server to another.

Choosing server when making chars was added with the March 8 update. SE said a year or two ago that they had no plans on letting players transfer between servers. Don't know if they changed that, but I haven't heard anything about it.

    ------

    OP:

You say: "I took a quick look on the AH and saw that there might be a total of all the swords in the game 3 for sale. Same with armor"

I just checked ffxiah.com's statistics for swords. You can check sale, who sold/bough, how many in stock (AH) etc. I checked EVERY SINGLE ONE of the 32 servers. There's plenty of swords below lvl 20, and since there are 3 starting cities/nations, roughly 33% should (in theory) be found in Windy (no reason to count in Jeuno/Whitegate for low lvl equips). All servers has a fair amount of swords below lvl 20.

Before the March 8 update, population was very balanced between servers. I find it very hard to believe that any of the servers suddenly are deserted, even if we're just talking about below lvl 20.

So, which server are you talking about?

Btw, as I've said several times before in other threads: I play on Fenrir, and I would never transfer if I ever got the chance. Of course some jobs has problems with parties there too, mostly at middle to higher lvls, but that's not a population problem.

same i find it hard to belive how i was from differnt servers and neither of them were near the way the op is claiming. i bet the op is just trying to keep people from playing it just because he didnt like it. Just because someone doesnt like a game doesnt mean they should try to force people to beleave that the game is also not good when in fact they might actually like it once they try it lol.

Well, anybody who buys under-20 equipment at the AH (unless they're rich and looking for HQ) is a damn fool anyways. It's all for sale in the NPC shops (or for a few items, fairly easily quested) for much cheaper.

I always am amazed on any forum how someone asking for help is eventually accused of being a troll, disliking the game, being a hater, working for x company etc. I love FFxi very much, I was trying to come back but being alittle put off by the lack of gear and weapons, as well as lack of people logged on at the time between 2-20. I appreciate the positive replies that most of you have given. I have since decided on a server and begun a new journey with a new character. I am not attempting to keep people away, if I was I would not come back .

OP, if what you claim is true, why will you still not tell which server you are talking about?

There are several issues with your post which at best are questionable. For example, talking about soloing as a DRK shows you don't know much about this game.

Until you tell us which server this was, I choose to consider this as a creative way of flaming.

I thought FF AH only tracked Jueno and Whitegate.  I dont think I ve ever seen my Windy mule on there or my bask mule , I put bolts and arrows almost daily.

Also if you havent been reading the BBS and Wikii sites , you d see how much of shortage there is for newbie gear. If a tank starts in Windy (for example) there are no axes or heavy armor. If you start a mage , and are in Bask , you have to goto a niknak shop hidden away to for light armor.

Then sandy has medium armor. Also if youre nation sucks (or is controlled by gilsellers) then you might not have access to most stand equipment. And dont even get me started on basic spells selection.

I play on Garuda and there is plenty of ppl....farmers etc around Ah is kinda hit or miss but find a friend or make a friend that has access to jueno and you will be fine. It's not gona be as busy as wow tho.. so if your thinking it's gona be full of ppl then I would stop playing ffxi
