you guys should try shadowbane....one of the best pvp mmorpgs still around and free. It is besides anarchy online probably one of the best free game out there, but i didnt like the pvp system in anarchy online that much so shadowbane is the way to go i think.
Definetely shadowbane has the best an deepest pvp ever and theres hardly any grind at all.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Anarchy Online here yet! Sure, it's kinda dated, and the graphics aren't first-rate, but for a free game it is far from horrid.
True... AO has some of the deepest character twinking and development in most any game. the first expansion is also free with basic download. (add's a nice pvp element)
Someone else mentioned Grenado Espada another interesting game with great graphics and some new twists to mmo play. Not a typical Asian MMO.

I played AO for a couple of weeks and found it pretty entertaining. It ended up that a big MMO release came out that I wanted to try shortly after I started so it kind of faded into the background. However it was decently fun and it is a full totally free MMO that you can play for free for nearly a year.
This dude gets bored quite quick. WTF. I mean I can understand tiring of WoW after playing for a long time. but he's like yeah I played Guild Wars for a day and got bored.. Crazy.
Still, this thread is very useful for people who are looking for free (quality) MMOs.
Granado Espada (http://ge.iahgames.net - another English version of Sword of the New World but without it's watered down gameplay and crippled costume system)probably is the best one right now. It is, however, still officially Beta and the business model has yet to be announced. Whether it will be f2p, b2p or p2p is not certain, but some kind of hybrid model (probably similar to Cabal Online) has been implied by the Devs.
GE has some refreshing features, like controlling 3 characters at the same time, leveling a whole family (up to 36 characters) with family level giving advantages to every single character - paradise for Alt-O-Holics. Gameplay is a bit repetitive and grind-only, customizing is non-existent and the world is split into several really (really) small maps. Furthermore, every map has a specific level range (e.g. 64-68). So the gameworld is linear sequence of small maps.
Still, with it's sweet eye candy, perfectly realistic and fluid animations, original scenario (a bit like the good old Arcanum, a mixture of fantasy, baroque and pop culture; but controlling a chick with dreadlocks, a shining plate armor, cowboy boots and a musketeer-rifle can be quite cool) and the ability to "play" the game while being afk, it's probably the best f2p game currently available.
Anarchy Online has been mentioned here, but I wouldn't really call it one of the best f2p games out there. Thing is: The "full" Anarchy Online, despite it's severely outdated graphics engine, is one of the best and most elaborated MMOGs ever made. No doubt. The f2p-version, however, lacks most of the content (most of all Shadowlands, an expansion which is more like a whole new game than just an expansion). All you can do is doing the random indoor-missions over and over again. Not being able to ever be competitive, missing out most content and fun and, and, and...
Tantra is another nice one. Haven't played it for too-long, since I got hooked up by GE. Some issues: It's officially played on Filippino servers, so most players speak Tagalog only (or a weird mix of Tagalog and English). Also, the Item Mall contains some very game-breaking stuff. If you would like to *really* get into the game and be competitive, you would have to spend some real life cash on the overpriced stuff. I am generally not very fond of cash shops that lead to a the-one-with-more-rl-money-owns-you server-societey.
Guild Wars is not really f2p but b2p. Still, it beats all the titles here. It does, however, lack the feel of persistent world and a real MMORPG. Hopefully, GW2 will fix that.
1. Guildwars - only flaw is instancing, so if you like to pk, ignore this game. nice graph, good balance, good support and its the only mmo with storyline
2. Shadowbane - the greatest gameplay and PvP but poor graphics. lots of customisation, lots of proffesions and races, no grind at all
3. Rappelz - pretty looking and interesting PvP ideas. biggest problem is SERIOUS lag
4. Knight Online - lots of grind and almost nonplayable if you dont buy premium account. but wars between nations are sweet
5. Last Chaos - beautiful and the best community there is. the game will be nice if you dont PvP, cuz u get stat penalties for PK
6. Kalonline - game is neverending grind. only 3 proffesions. No PvP.
Playing: Rohan Played (from best to worst): Shadowbane, Guild Wars, Shayia, Age of Conan, Warhammer, Runes of Magic, Rappelz, Archlord, Knight online, King of Kings, Kal online, Last chaos

Sword of the New World, the watered down K2-version for the NA/EU market is out and p2p + Item Mall.
Granado Espada by IAHgames is still in Open Beta and there's still no official word on the Business Model. Although recently it has been announced that the business model will be published in the next weeks, with an implication for a rather complex model that seems to mix up f2p and p2p. Probably f2p with special premium services, Item Mall being a given in any case.
While you can pay for it, you can play it for free (Although limited to certain ships and the starting rank.)
Darkspace is a Space based MMORTS. There isnt a grind (except for prestige, which helps with rank). It's purely PvP. Theres a Beta version out aside from the current live version, and it's completley free..
And yes, Darkspace does have a good bit of problems going with it.. Having one coder does give abit of problems there.

Premium services is called the f2p model. If they are talking about a mixed p2p model I wouldnt be surprised if it was the same thing as the watered down NA version as you call it.
It's Shin Megami Tensei as an MMORPG, and it's quite fun if you've played any of the SMT games. You can recruit the enemies you encounter to become your minions, and fuse them together in the Jakyou Manor to obtain even stronger ones. Battles use a timing system divided between you and your minion. You have to time attacks, blocks, counterattacks, and spells/skills well to maximize your killing efficiency, while exploiting weaknesses in the enemy's defense patterns. Both you and your minion are included in this system; if you get locked in an enemy's combo attack, you can break it by having your minion attack. Casting a spell the enemy is weak against will cause massive damage, and most spells also stun the enemy for a short period of time.
While it's hard to get the hang of as it's a Jap game, there IS an English-speaking community, albeit somewhat sparse. Some members of the infamous nerd humor site SomethingAwful, also known as Goons, play sometimes. Prior knowledge of Shin Megami Tensei games will also help tremendously.
