How will this work anyway?

I just figured out what this game was all about and I have a question.

How will the combat system actually work? I'm thinking of all the players who will have a 300+ ping, how do you defend against something that already happened 0.3 seconds ago? It'll take about 0.15 seconds to react so almost half a second has already passed before you've raised your shield/dodged/whatever you do. WIll low connection speed and distance to servers make this unplayable for some? If it delievers what it promises then the servers will be packed and the ping will be high regardless of distance or connections speed, though thats a paradox because if that makes the game unplayable then the server population would be low.

And now I think only of PvE, imagine the disadvantages in PvP.

The only solution I can imagine at this late hour if the day is to have an auto-defend ability. But then it would probably be level/skill based and destroy some of the major selling points of this game.

Maybe thats why it has taken such long time to develop the game... trying to solve it.

well, lots of games have pvp and deal with it somehow...lets assume they'll work something out...

Get a better computer and better connection speed if you gonna play DF......we live in 2007 you know

Thats what all modern devs do today, they dont lower the standards of MMO..they force players to get better gear.

That doesn't really help EU players if they place all the servers in USA or vice versa. Doesn't help either if all the EU servers will be located in say... the UK and you live in Italy, greece or russia. In other (boring) click and autofight mmo's thats not much of an issue. Neither is mmofps like planetside since you can't against other players attacks other than to hide.

maybe it wont be a problem alot of people have broadband now, and server technolagy is improving, it will obveously still lag, its never avoidable, they might make it so that its not as noticeable as it has been in the past. It remains to be seen, at least we know that beta might be in the summer now, so we can see if it works or not.

Ever played CS, or any other online shooter for that matter?  Sure ping matters, but you can usually get away with a slightly higher ping and still win if your good enough.

Plus, FPS are a lot faster.  Its not like people are going to be one shotting you everytime.

MMO's are slower by nature.  I dont think ping/lag will have a huge effect, and make it "unplayable to some".

Peoples connection speeds have gone up dramatically, and are still rising. Plus they started the games with these problems in mind and have been working from the ground up, working with these problems and trying to find solutions. In other words doing what other game producers should be doing, making massive content and epic battles, large worlds, massive scale. But no that would mean they have to put an ass ton of work into developing which someone without passion for the game would loose interest in. That is why i believe they can pull it off because if anything those group of guys care more about the detail and complexity of the game than us the players.   Maybe in some cases im sure some people will have terrible lag problems because of factors like wi-fi, slowish connection, greedy isp. Seems like even though it will be twitch gaming, CS was a good example, PS, etc. We have such good tech now,  people only need to put there heads together to work around a problem. I say "no problem". this game will RAWK!

--edit-- Since heavy influence is from UO, the block system my be similar, although i agree it would take away from immersion. although even if only half of this games content was delivered it would be a hell of a better pvp game than many out already hehe.

If I remember correctly you will be blocking manually so ping will matter as far as that is concerned. The developers have already stated that one of the main focuses they have is making it as lag free as possible. I think they have posted on it in the past and have said that the PLAYERS connection / hardware will be what defines how good or bad their ping is. Lets face it, not everyone has a computer that will handle 300+ person battles for a castle.

Seeing how this game is being developed in Europe, I doubt those players will really have to worry about server location. Myself being in the US on the other hand does concern me a bit.

Maybe if the game does well enough they will add a new server state-side. I hope so for the sake of US players they do, i don't want to be carving my way through all the US players in my path because of their low ping. No sense of satisfaction there
