LEGO Universe has been announced as the official title for the upcoming LEGO MMOG from NetDevil. The game will be marketed toward a younger audience and is set for release in the fourth quarter of 2008.

BILLUND, DENMARK - June 7, 2007 - The LEGO(R) Group today announced LEGO
Universe as the official title for the upcoming MMOG being developed by
NetDevil(R) to further engage the company's dedicated and active community.
LEGO Universe, currently planned for launch in the fourth quarter of 2008,
is designed as the first MMOG professionally developed for LEGO fans and
supported by community members from around the world.

"LEGO Universe ties together all aspects of our community and line of
products in an online environment that can be enjoyed by LEGO fans of all
ages," said Mark William Hansen, Director of Business Development, LEGO
Universe. "By merging the online world of social interaction with the LEGO
concept of play, LEGO Universe will provide our community with an entirely
new way to experience LEGO and connect with other players in a fun and
imaginative setting."

The full-featured MMOG will be complete with character advancement,
expansive social and community features, and will provide a child-safe
alternative to other MMOGs on the market. As a player, you'll be able to
customize your mini-figs and interact in the universe as any character you
choose, providing unique opportunities for players to expand and explore
with their creations.

"LEGO Universe is being built as a place where fans and community members
can discover nearly unlimited play possibilities," said Ryan Seabury,
NetDevil Lead Producer on LEGO Universe. "Given the strength of the LEGO
community, a large part of bringing the game to life will be working hand in
hand with them to ensure that the core values of creativity, connectivity,
and imagination are reflected in the end product."

For LEGO Universe to truly become a 'child-safe alternative,' it will have to become the most heavily moderated game in history. It will need a small army of people trained how to tell a child why their painstaking but unfortunately phallic construction had to be deleted overnight. And it will need an installation and registration process so rigorous that potential griefers will take one look and walk away. In short, it's going to be quite the balancing act to pull off a successful roll-out of this game.

I loved Lego when I was a kid. But a Lego MMO??? The mind boggles. I picture leveling up a Lego man after having to kill Lego rats. And for the crafters you can gain xp from building Lego houses. Though thats only once your level 20+. To start with you have to grind Lego daggers! It will be interesting to see what they are going to do with it. As for worrying about paedophiles, well I suggest to those kind of sick people that they simply play WoW. There are far to many kids in that game!

If I was a kid, I would rather play this than Toon Town.

I wonder if they will let us build cities and vehicles? That could be cool. I also think the way they will keep anoying idiots out is by making it a non killing game. You will probably level by quests, but just not by killing stuff.

Someone needs to give these idiots a good kick in the behind.  MMO's should not be played by kids.

Anyone who lets younger kids play an MMO on the internet needs to be locked up.  Letting kids do something like this just invites them to mix with the kiddie porn sicko's.

I just can't wait to see legislature's enacting laws against this.  You can bet the first scandal and you know there will be one, will get laws enacted all over the place.

They should learn to stick to single player games.

This is the dumbest stupidest idea I have seen  yet.  In fact, I think I will give my congressman a call now.

    LOL

My dear child, now I put away the modem, sit here to the comp, here it this game called Transport Tycoon, play with this after you wrote your lesson. No, you can't talk with your friends online to share ideas, but here is the mobile phone instead to call me if you have problem while I'm having fun elsewhere.

Yes, if you realise that that parent is actualy you then you shouldn't call yourself  "parent".

Old rule, if you try to stop a child to not to do something without a real reason/explanation, then they will overpower you.

    Back on topic.

The idea is good if parents are watching their childrens to not to be addicts. Btw will this be a basic lego or the advanced (technic) one?

This game could be really fun.

Imagine being able to build whatever you want and go an lego adventures.

I would make a lego skeleton pirate and have a pirate ship with wheels and cannons so it could run on land, and it would be staffed by stormtroopers, then I would go around and attack and pillage other player buildings, it would be like Garry's Mod, but cute and made out of blocks.

Of course I don't think the game will be like that, but it was a nice thought while it lasted.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

As a long-time gamer and parent of two children (currently 8 and 3) who both play computer games... I think this is great.  If they approach interactions with the same care that Disney did in ToonTown, I see no problem with it whatsoever.

For those not familiar with the child-oriented mmorpg, all talk (except for folks you know in real life) is menu-driven, pulling down to stock phrases and replies. It's actually amazing how well you can play and coordinate with people without every actually typing something original.  As for activities, there you battle humorless robots with practical jokes...

A lego environment has a lot of potential, although I suspect construction will be limited to the model-kit variety, rather than free-form block construction. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.

And yes... our children do not play unattended. Although, primarily that's so we can help and explain things. They aren't allowed in environments where anyone might actually interact with them freely.

I agree with Jack, all it really needs to be 'kidsafe' is quickchat, and it's not like that's hard to implement.  I'm sorta disappointed by the lack of foresight in this thread.  The creativity purposes a Lego mmo is great for kids and adults (ie the parents) alike.  For some its seems like its too late, as their creativity and imaginations burned out long ago and they sit here and ponder what to do in a Lego mmo.

    I'd play it.

When they say "Lego Universe" I have to wonder what kind of a setting or backdrop the world is going to have.

Well, I was going to say this would be perfect for the WoW kiddies when their game is patching. However, I have deduced that it requires originality, imagination, and -*dare I say it*- at least a pre-school mental acuity to be able to build with Legos.

So, I guess the WoW-brigade has been cut off from this game.......

    Oh lord.

I hate to trample over any idea but I am sure this one will be a complete car crash. Just beacuse Lego Star Wars ( and soon-to be Lego Batman) are original, funny and therefore popular (i.e. made huge amounts of profit), does not meen an MMo will do the same.

As for kids on MMO's. I am a strong believer that young kids need to be out doing sports or other stuff that encourages their RL social learning rather than staring at a screen. I was a gamer from around 12 years old (long time ago in the ZX and C64 days) and remember it fondly, but imo, younger than that risks stagnating kids personal growth.

Its, obviously, far different now with the internet. The ability to immerse yourself into a virtual world where there is no end of content can easily become all encompassing. Parents, ( of which I am one of - 4 kids), have a stronger role in regulation now than theye ever did.

As a Gamer I can be both more aware of the addictive capacity of both single player, MMO and the internet but I can also be the worst qualified if I also use it as the majority social stimulus.

Gaming should be a part of their social life and hobbies, not all encompassing.

Well there was already a lego online game where basically you could go solo or connect with IPs to people and all you would do is build things like buildings, roads and stuff. Or a castle and play around on it. It wasn't the best made game, but it was pretty fun.

I hope you guys don't bash on this so early in development. I really think that this will be a success. I mean if they can have computer games that turned out very well, with an actual storyline then why not an MPOG? Imagine the cusomization possibilities. *Drool* I hope they'll make it just like the single player games on pc where you walk around a city and you can build copters or planes and cars, skateboards and all that junk.

I've played many games, and the ones that I play change weekly. Currently I am very interested in Gunbound, Poker, and Kwon Ho once more. I am thinking of returning to Maple Story and Ghost Online.

I really want to play this and a lot of my geeky friends are into Lego too, but we're all a little old for the target audience. It will feel a bit odd to be playing a kids game so I hope they have some age-restricted servers for us oldies so we don't feel like paedo's!

"The most heavily moderated game in history" = NO FUN. If you're older than 12, don't bother following this.

    Playing: BF2142

    Waiting For: Jumpgate: Evolution

Played: UO, DAoC, MCO, EQ, AO, TSO, Shadowbane, Planetside, SWG, FFXI, CoH, L2, EQ2, WoW, MxO, EVE, AoC

    Played 6mo+: UO, EVE

I'd rather be told i'm hot by some perv on the internet than join a street gang and get shot.

Also, theres already a lego themed mmo that few people know about. Its called tbm. Its a mod for a game called blockland0002, which is no longer availible or supported, as a newer retail version has been released that costs $20 and is un modable. However, the mod, tbm, is still availible, along with the original game on their site.

It has over 300 different bricks (i've counted them myself) and you can generally place up to 1500 or so without a signifigant slowdown. It has almost full minifigure customization, and the developers are working on their own game, based on the same engine, torque, but with better fixes for lag and other engine features. their new game, free build, is 100% open source (including the engine), so anyone can be part of its development. DId i mention this game, with its Death to Block add-on has well over a dozen lego themed weapons? It also has these cool switches for making bricks move, rotate, cloak, and shoot weapons, and theres vehicles, which can be modded to shoot weapons. If you do get it, make sure you get the main update, dtb (death to block), and all of calc84maniac's mods and the AI mod from the forums. there are screenshots and videos on the main site.

I just thought I'd mention this so you guys have something to play online with friends untill Lego Universe is released.
