Night People

Does anyone know if it is possible that a person can just be a night person?

I swear, I cannot get into the swing of getting up in the morning and going to bed at night.  I've been doing it for years, but it has been a continuous horrible battle.  I go to bed, I lay there until 4 am then fall asleep FINALLY only to have to wake up in 2 hours to the alarm.  This goes on for a few days until my body is absolutely exhausted and then I come home from work one day and go straight to bed to sleep for 12 hours straight.

I had some time off work for a while, like on vacations and such, and found that when I don't have to awake to the alarm clock my body naturally falls asleep during the day and wakes at night.

I know we are supposed to be programmed to follow the cycles of the sun but I think something got messed up in me.  I am considering changing careers so I can get a night job.  It's that bad.

Have you tried exercise? It's proven that if you exercise, you'll be able to fall asleep faster, and your quality of sleep will increase.

I'm much the same, if left to my own devices I gradually go to bed an hour later each time, until I start going to bed at lunch time. Then I just stay up all day and night for a couple of days to sort it out.

Sounds like you have a sleep disorder.

I fall asleep very easy, but wake up about once an hour, been doing it for as long as I can remember.  Just like you I don't sleep straight through the night untill I'm completely exhuasted.

    I am a night owl.

I always revert to falling asleep at dawn and waking up at noon.  I have no idea if it is just a convenient pattern for how I live my life or if it is something more biological. (Shrug)

I know a lot of people that do not have sleep disorders that are just used to sleeping at different times than the typical 11pm-7am.

I exercise.  Thanks for the suggestion though.

I lift weights 3-4 days a week and run the days in between.

I've thought about that.  You may be right.

Unfortunately, when I checked into it I found out that my insurance doesn't cover the overnight testing needed to find out if that's what it is.  I mostly wonder what I'm paying for with my insurance lately.  Especially since they just went down on the amount of prescription coverage as well.  Bastards!

If I let my body take over, it will consistently take me to bed around 5-6 am then wake me up around 3-4 pm.  I just think I may be wired that way.  Because when I let my body have its way I sleep straight through.  Otherwise, if I follow the typical work pattern, I toss and turn all night long.

    Very true.

Easiest way to tell if it's a sleep disorder.

If your tired and ready for bed and just lay there for hours unable to fall asleep, then most likely it's a sleep disorder.  If youre not tired when you go to bed then it's not a problem.

You only need to sleep as much as your body requires it.  Trying to go to bed because you think it's time isn't always good.  The body knows best, and will tell you when it's time for bed.

Try a bottle of beer or a glass of wine.  Sometimes it works for me.

Sounds like your body just doesn't like to follow a clock.

Same thing happens to me on occasion.  The beer usually helps.

I remember joe said he was going to do that 15 or 30 minute nap thing every 4 hours.  That  sounded retarded.

  • I had a period when I had no job and took night courses, living off scholarship money. I eventually reverted to a schedule of awakening at about dusk, and going to sleep about dawn. Aside from the boredom factor of being awake when no one is doing anything, it felt completely natural to me. Maybe I'm wired funny, but if I had a choice I'd go nocturnal.

I would have to say I wouldn't mind giving night living a shot. I hate going by schedules, so waking up early is a bitch to me because I go to bed an usually only manage about 6 hours.

    5 am here.

First light is the best time to go hunting. Then off to fall asleep infront of breakfast T.V.
