I think the #1 rule for newbies just starting out is: Use the Auction House
Do not sell anything(for the most part) to vendors.
Also remember to get signet from the city guards(just as u leave sandy). This will enable you to get crystal drops from enemies. Sell those on the auction house.

Btw what server are you on?
he is on Asura, besides the things that Rpro said, you will want to solo till about lvl 10-12ish after that i would recommend trying to find a group in the Dunes, stay there till about lvl 20ish. I dont remember @ what lvl you are able to obtain a sub-job, but you should do that asap, then head to jeuno, to start lvl'ing in Qufim. I hope that helps, if you have any other questions please feel free to PM me. GL in Vana'Diel.
p.s. FFXI was the greatest gaming experience i've ever had, starts off a lil slow, but truly a great game!
As a starter job, try to pick something that will be useful in a party, I'm not telling you how to play your game, just letting you know, that way you do not get discouraged at early lv because no party invites, for example support jobs, healer, red mage.
There is no job not even Mages get partys all the time I got my Galka War to lvl 75 and merits before i quit but i can say for sure is make sure you know what class is suited to each job as your main will have little bonus kit but lvlter you can swap job when you get the rare's with added mp and so on that you need to lvl some jobs no point being a Galka WHM if at lvl 20 you have less mp than a lvl 3 Taru WHM but with the right kit my Galka had more mp than a lot of Tarus yet a Taru Warrior is a bit of a joke at low lvl but with the right kit there as good as any other.
I would suggest for a good all rounder to start you off.
Hume REDMAGE there meant to be harder to lvl for noobies but thats rubbish they are hard as nails good melee and spell combat
Thief is a good one too but you will find you self doing all the pulling so come with a ranged weapon and later they get some sick damage
Black mage good for partys lvl's fast but a bad party can have you dead a lot if they can't pull the hate
monk as a Galka nothing else needs to be said really Galka monks are Crazy they can do wacky damage fast attacks and have enough HP to solo till lvl 20 easy i go mine to 24 before going into a party.
warriors well thats good job but till you get ninja partying past 30 can be a pain not because there no good but because people have a built in silly switch that say warriors past 30 must have ninja subjob
elvaans well never really played them but they for some crazy reason have more str than galkas no 1 truly knows why
mithra the best damn thief your ever get
whm taru will get a good start but you will find at higher lvl some days there are more whm about than dd's
don't be afraid to ask people questions if they don't answer then leave it and as someone else don't beg and don't spam shout always get a signet before leaving town from the guard at the gate or from the guard in the embassy sell stacks of crystals at the AH and you will find you have a good kit in no time.
I tried to ask questions like these in game and I joined a linkshell and everything but no one ever gave me answers.
This would've helped so much before I quit. Every time I look at the game, it makes me want to come back though. I might after I beat Zelda and FFXII, but not sure.
But yeah, this helps.
I didn't see it anywhere, but you get subjob when you get any job to lv 18.

Also, Squeenix made a series of videos to help out new adventurers here.
