Star Wars Galaxies: Demolition Postponed Again

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

The Star Wars Galaxies house pack-up event that had originally been postponed until June 12 has once again been pushed back to an unspecified date because of stability issues.

Folks,

I am sorry to say that we will once again be postponing the House Pack-up event that was scheduled for next Tuesday, June 12th. We have addressed most of the issues that had been giving us problems in House and Vendor pack-up, but there was still a few cases and situations that were arising that made me uncomfortable with going live. This is unfortunate to say the least, but we refuse to release anything to live that could cause problems and detract from the positive trend we have in stability and quality.

We expect to have the issues resolved soon, but because of the complexity and importance of getting this right, we have decided that we will be doing a live test-run of the entire system on TestCenter (the old one with the frogs), which we will reopen for this test. The TestCenter database includes a large number of player structures that would qualify under the parameters of the event and this should allow us to feel confident that we had it all tight before releasing to live. There really in no way of accurately testing these systems without a large number of players hitting them at the same time.

The plan is to bring up TestCenter for a day first with all structures the qualify marked as abandoned. This should give players time to scout out their targets and also allow folks who want to give it a try to setup a new 'toon. Then the next day we will bounce the servers and enable the event itself and players will be able to pack houses and factories (and call in the air strikes of course). If that all goes well we will enable the event on the live servers.

The plan at this point is to have TestCenter brought up for this event towards the end of next week. I know that people are anxious to get this thing going and I apologize for the delay. Please be assured that we all want this to happen, we just want it to be right.

Lorin W. Jameson (DeadMeat)

Producer, Star Wars Galaxies, SOE

hah, who is he kidding? i don't give a friggen thing about the whole "blow up the house and get a lousy reward''

also, you could have seen this coming. Its typically SOE: never can get things done fairly quick and good..

It is good to hear this Dev team is serious about the reputation they have gained with their player base. I hated what SOE did to my beloved game (pre-cu).It is good to hear they learned a valueable lesson from thie NGE fiasco and I really believe now that they are trying to repair what they have done in the past. What he said about not recking the confidence they have built is the 1st time I have ever seen a SOE team admit to the fact they do not want to release an unfinished patch. I may soon resubscribe to this game in maybe a couple more months or so and go check it out. I do not live in the past and like the positive feedback that this dev team is getting. This development team deserves a little praise for the Job they are doing with with this game. Dev teams are not responsible in my opinions for eveything that happens in mmo's I know how corporations operate and sometimes they make bad decisions. If this team succeeds in returning this game to its past and are able to incorporate the things it once had back into it with less bugs and into a more polished state more power to them. For the gamers who now play SWG and are enjoying themselves I salute you thats what these games are for. Great to hear that good things are happening to this game its nice to hear good news for a change.

LOL  they dont want to do this until they can figure out a way to put NPC housing so it looks like theres people playing still. Can u imagine if the TGR guys and Obraik found out that there they only players? SOE would lose there prized snake oil buyers.

Yeah, it would have been nice if they'd had that attitude back in 2003.  We might have had a game that worked by Christmas 2003 rather than having to wait years for all the bugs to be fixed.

Would not surprise me at all to find out they're postponing it purely so they can pull these PR publicity stunts. There's an awful lot of explanation there for a simple "it wasn't ready, so we pushed it back."

Good news? lmao Destroying player housing due to a HUGE loss of playerbase isnt good. Its just a way to apease those who throw there money away on this trash. As for Dev praise u first need REAL devs not community college graduates who post polls on how to rehast CH and do it with as litlle as possible programming as possible and claim its new content. You want to see REAL Devs come play LOTRO those Devs crank out a free content upate a month after a solid release have actually beta tested and gotten the game out of beta unlike SWG who is a 4 year plus beta and still not live know matter  how much they lie about it.. Once they do the house demolition i think youll feel a lot moooooooooooooooore lonely in there thats what there really afraid of people seeing the truth about how many houses/players are gone...

i hate to say this bu even though they have "some" bugs fixed. they still have ALOT of bugs they need to fix. instead of adding more crap they need to just have 1 fix for everything. but that would take a few more months for them to get right. this game will never be the way it couldve been shouldve been will be.

I''d rather have stuff delayed than to have it go live with bugs.

People always rush the Devs to put stuff in and then complain if it's buggy.

Having played a master architect and helped build many of those first player cities, it's breaks my heart to see SOE destroy them all. Those people sure know how to upset a player base better than anybody else. So I'm glad they have postponed it. It may give them time to see sense and give up on the idea totally.
  • aeryianaeryian Member Posts: 1

In my experience, SOE (at least the SWG team, I cant speak for their other teams) doesnt give a damn about their player base, but I wouldnt say it is JUST SOE, its also Lucas Arts, after all, they get to say yes or no to the ideas the devs put forward, so in fact, BOTH teams are stupid as cow crap.  At this point, I honestly dont see why they bother running this game anymore at all, the fact of the matter is, they shouldnt let players blow up houses, they should let players destroy the game, give EVERYONE death stars maybe? then they can destroy all the planets, huzzah!  That'd be fine by me, since the only thing they never REALLY screwed up was space fighting, so why not mess it up too?

What I really wonder, is if these insecure morons who are running things on either the SOE or the Lucas Arts side realize what a great fanchise and IP they have screwed over multiple times to the point where fanatics of the genre wont even play it anymore, just a few 12 year old boys who have fun with themselves to badly modelled female twi'leks.

Perhaps instead of doing all the crap they are doing, they should just trash the whole game... Any decent developer knows when it's time to pull the plug and start fresh (if at all)

As a current subscriber to SWG, I could care less about this delay. I think it's a novel idea to have the players remove the buildings and acquire badges from doing so, but it's not major content that is ruining the game by not being there.

Take as much time as you need Devs.

    so...

Players have been BEGGING for this for YEARS. We need to get rid of ancient houses so our active cities can expand.

And i cant wait for this event - it will be fun and there is a decent number of rewards you can get.

I dont play SWG.. i follow it barely bc it does seem like an interesting game but the P2P is so high compared to other games it makes me nahh.. I see allot reviews on this new feature. one so far that looking forward to it. "Dargnon" n thats kool.. others just dont care, also kool.. if its not broke or effecting anything greatly then why fk wit it right? N sum say its a bad idea.. as with anything u'll have different views.. to make everyone happy is rare just gotta go for the whole

But anyway.. lookin at Dargnons post, it gave me a lil insight into what this patch will do.. blow up buildings? That does sound unique in the MMORPG world, not counting strategy. So whats the whole concept about it? Dargnon said ppl have been askin for it and to get rid of the ancient houses so u can expand the active cities. Can anyone go into more detail about the two, ancient houses and the "active cities"

Actually it is good it means they plan to move on with what they got and plan to build on their new future since they know that probably 90 percent of the old playerbase will not come back. Why make the current population suffer because of past mistakes:P
  • BreaghaBreagha Member Posts: 131
Just let my accounts run out, so I suppose I'm at the point where I'm pretty indifferent either way.

However, from a still playing point of view, from an architect's point of view, and I would assume especially from a city builder's point of view, this is probably one of the best things that'll happen on the infrastructure side of things. Many planets on most of the servers have reached their maximum capacity for cities and metropolises (is that even a word? Metropolises? :P) - with the server wide building packup a lot of the ghost towns will disappear, leaving room for new player towns and new communities to build up.

And yes, contrary to what a lot of people think, the game has gotten new subscriptions, and new players.

Right after the NGE hit and knocked most of us out of the game, the servers were all very light populated. Some are still on light, but quite a few are getting more and more populated. It's only fair that the new players get the same opportunities in building up their towns that we did, way back when, when it was a game that attracted another player base. The building and the infrastructure was one of the things they at least didn't tamper with in the NGE, and it's still the best player housing system I've come across in the games I've played, from a customization point of view. The house pollution is an unfortunate side effect, and now they're finally doing something about it.

Can only say that as much as I dislike SOE, and loath their man-handling of SWG, waiting to assure there'll be a minimum of complications is a very welcome and much needed approach from their side. As someone already mentioned, though - should have just been incorporated in their community policies ages ago.

The only thing they should be "packing up" is the servers....

Can anyone go into more detail about the two, ancient houses and the "active cities" Ancient houses - houses belonging to players who arent playing this game for a looong time. Actually, only houses belonging to accounts inactive for 1 year + will be "destroyed". But they will ONLY be marked as vailable for demoliton - until some player finds such a house, then he can call demolition bomber that will destroy it, house will blow up and will be PACKED into its owners datapas - nothing is deleted, only the house is removed from the map, the room will be free, no lag because of this structure, and its owners can always return and un-pack that house again somewhere else.

Active cities - to build city, you need citizens. More citizens means higher citi rank, With higher rank, you get more features for your city like shuttleport, mission terminals and so on. But you cant expand yourcity if there are thousands of houses belonging for players who left this game in 2005.

    Hmm,

You really haven't been been following this game for the past 2-3 months?  There are many bugs being smashed, players returning or joining and new content added such as Beast Master, Revamps of Theme Parks and addtion of a new quest series.  A large improvement also was the advancement of the MOB AI.  They now are doing specials in combat so you can't solo everything anymore.  Elites and Bosses at your level are just nuts now.

My recommendation, if you have time in a few months (after Chapter 7 or so), do a 14 day trial and see what its like.
