I remember how amazing 2003 was for mmorpgs with the likes of Horizons,EVE,SWG and PS and it looked to be a grea future for the genre. However something happened and all mmorpgs that year were cursed or something lol. Planetside and SWG was ruined while Horizons and EVE had bad developers that cheat/scam, such a shame all they need to do to EVE though is make a new server developers can't play on lol.

I remember buying Planetside on launch day after i spent ages looking for it in the UK and i fell in love with the game, i spent all summer 2003 playing it and my fondest memories was July because back then i remember the biggest battles. The massive footzergs of Amerish and the all day long battles for Forseral, just seeing soooo many people playing and the future looked soo great.

However as soon as the expansion came out it was a big let down and it's when i stopped playing the game. We didn't want the caverns because the world was big enough and it just wasn't well designed. All we asked for was to fix the main problem with the game and that was the bases were all the same, we wanted them to be redesigned to like mini cities and to all be different.

So i believe the expansion was the downfall of the game.

The expansion only didn't change the game is what you should be happy about. Look at what happened to SWG. I personally LOVE the caverns pure infantry fights. I went 30/1 in there :). The bases for the conts where designed from what I hear. But SOE just didn't have the people with the knowledge to rewrite the conts in order to put the bases in. That was the major problem with it. If you enjoy zerg fights a lot you'll feel right at home if you started playing again lol.

The downfall for this game was the lack of support for it after the BFRs came out. No content for 2+ years then when the game is almost we get new content quite a shame.

The game doesn't need more land mass though, it just needs something new on the existing ones. I guess it's never going to be saved now however and the expansion was a big blow because it added EVEN more land space and was such a big let down everyone left.

The Caverns in PlanetSide was meant to be Urban Combat you see in real life. The players wanted Urban Combat but it wouldn't fit into the current story line and it would be to hard to work into the maps. It never worked the way it was meant to though

Core Combat was terrible, more ppl down there now than ever but those zip lines drive you potty.

OTT BFR's drove me away, devs dont understand balance on any game however.

The game now is as balanced as its ever going to get and the new Scorpion weapon as a great idea for fishing off the wall huggers and snipers.

The new pistols require sound to avoid them, when you hear the charge up for a full clip fire move quick and you survive.

Flamethrower is our answer to the scattermax but it isnt OTT.

As to 2003, I read the review of PS in PC Format, went out and bought it and spent the next 4 years never regretting my purchase.

I think the expansion was part of the original problem too, although I do like the caves, they are sorta fun, I just dont think they were a good move.  They are very big, so require a lot of players in them to keep things fun.  I think maybe the size might feel overwhelming to most players.

They probably would have been better off adding air base ships for the expansion.  They could still do some urban combat stuff by adding floating pieces of land on one or two of the continents.  This would have added to the already grand battles as opposed to pulling attention away from what made planetside amazing.

    /agreed

I remember the first few days of CC everyone and there mother that purchased it was down there, except the few people (myself included) that were warned by beta testers not to get it.. For the first few days there was no topside fights AT ALL.. I was seriously begginng to regret not getting it, then slowly but surely people started to come back to the topside and all you saw in the chat channels was CC SUCKS!!!!  WTF were they thinking about those ziplines... After a few weeks all the caves were used for was to get mods, nonone and I mean nonone went down there to fight. So basicly yeah, it was a failure and the only reason people are there now is to excape all the damn vehicle and BFR spamming.

I  too miss the old days (prior to CC) I cannot think of a time that I had so much damn fun playing a game.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

I feel you bro. It's like you read my mind. I'll often wish the same thing. Kinda like how I miss the good old "Day of Defeat" days before news of the source version was released.

Summer of 03 was a good summer. I remember first playing PS in June and than spending all summer playing it till 3am or 4am every morning. AT the time I was a high school student with no summer job. I also started playing Star Wars Galaxies that summer. Had no clue what the hell I was doing but for some reason I  still enjoyed it and all my friends were playing EVE. My friends and I would just go to a fast food restaurant and chill while talking about all the MMO's we were playing. Good times.

Planetside back then had Smokejumper and Sporkfire and everybody was an active member of the community. It was pretty close knit. Players were actually working together as a team and Planetside-universe was at it's prime with monthly radio shows with the devs.

Things just ain't what they used to be. Although real life is pratially to blame. Jobs and college keep you busier from playing MMO's. But Core Combat, BFR's (when the game finally started sucking for me) and increased BR's all helped in hurting the game.

But you know what? MMO's are like a drug. You always want that "first hit" you get when you fire up a MMO for the first time. But the more you play it the more it becomes harder to get that "first hit". I miss being "awed" by PS when I first installed the demo and I was all like "OMG! hUNDEREDS OF OTHER ACTUAL PLAYERS!!!!"

i left because of the BFRs.  they ruined the experience for me.

but i came back after they offered support XP and that ALMOST was worth it ;)

it could just be SO much more. if only sony gave a damn, right?
