"Earth and Beyond" and "Asherons Call 2"?

sctt888sctt888 Member Posts: 128

Do you guys think games like Earth and beyond and asherons call 2 will ever comeback again? Earth and beyond was pure awesome, and AC2 wasnt a bad game at all. once a game is shut down like that will it ever get a second chance or is it shut down for good?

It would be really awesome to see Earth and Beyond to come back online, or to see an Earth and Beyond 2, but it's EA.. they aren't going to bring it back, like ever. The reason they shut it down was probably because they weren't making enough money off of it or something.

It would be nice if someone could buy the rights for it and bring it back one day, I would love to be able to play that game again.

Yeah, Earth and Beyond was a fantastic game and I wish it was still around. I had a lot of fun with that one. However I highly doubt we will ever see it return, it was scrapped and I believe that they wanted to use its resources for "The Sims Online" which was a horrible decision.

Now that EA bought Mythic I'm worried that they will pull the same type of idiotic stunt with WAR.  Shutting down a great game with quite a few dedicated players to use the resources it consumes for a PoS game like "The Sims Online"

A lot of people are asking for the developers to release the source code for the game servers and the answer is the same they cannot release it nor will they ever entertain releasing it to the public domain. In fact Asheron's Call 2 engine (an inhouse developed engine by Turbine) was used further in development of other MMOs such as DDO and Lord of the Rings Online.

Having been around the block a few times with the whole E&B redux and EA, it's a guarantee that they will never just release the source code or re-open a server for that game.  They simply will not pay for the development, staffing, bandwidth, etc for a game that was sunset in 02... they didn't advertise the thing to begin with, they certainly aren't going to pay for it now.

Many people have asked about purchasing the IP for E&B and the going price is apparently about 1.5 million dollars.

So.  Forget E&B, it will never return unless someone writes up an emulator (wink wink).  EA is far too concerned with console sports games to bother with interfacing with the E&B fan base.  Or you could always play dress-up-dolly with the sims online.

Earth & Beyond was my first MMORPG Mistress ! She will holed a spot in my heart forever. I was lucky enough to get it on the beta  but waited 6 months before I made the comitment to play it after the beta was over. The a BASTAGE of a BIG BULLY "EA" took her away and is holding her hostage. When will they realize their mistake and give her back to us!!!!!

    LONG LIVE E&B

This is my first post here. I'll be getting a new high end gaming PC soon - that is if Gateway ever ships it to me!

Anyway I really miss Earth and Beyond. It was the only role playing game I enjoyed. I liked the missions and space combat (with real time action) to loot parts to upgrade my ship. The space graphics were great at the time. I only got to play it over about 6 months though. Then EA discontinued it. I wish they would revive it or sell the rights to another company like Blizzard or something to update it and bring it online again. :(

Eve looks interesting but I heard the space combat is not like E&B's real time control so that is a turn off for me.

You can probably tell from my Unreal Tournament avatar that I'm also into first person shooter games. That's why I'm interested in this new game coming out called Tabula Rasa. It seems to be a combination of a MMORPG and FPS. I'm lookling forward to this game to get me back into MMORPG's again!

Played both of them and thought both were pretty good. Don't think they're coming back, sadly.

I wish that a F2p network would take over and buy the rights to Earth & Beyond .. i would even pay monthly sub again.. but i do think there is alot of money to be made in this game still ... it was my 1st MMO.. and i still think about how great it was...

    Long Live E&B^^;

I played AC 2 for a trial and thought it was quite fun, I do not see why people did not like it.

As former Earth and Beyond players here, I am wondering about EVE which I heard many E&B players went to after it was cancelled.

How does space combat actually compare to E&B. Does it feel like real time attacking and manuvering, or in EVE is it more of an autopilot controlled experience? I read the FAQ and all action is in your ship only. It looks like there is plenty of eye candy but I guess I'm looking for a clone of E&B in some ways. Maybe I should try the trial period when my new PC arrives.

I guess I'm evaluating a sci-fi MMORPG to return to. My friend who I used to play E&B with is addicted to World of Warcraft. It looks cool graphically but just seems too repetative for me and everyone just stands around the monsters montionless attacking. I wish they would make a World of Starcraft or something.

I miss Earth and Beyond ... RIP.

I miss E&B too.  If it was run by a true gaming company, it would still be around.  Would love it if someone would have bought the IP.

AC2 I am not a fan of.  It was okay, but I always felt too restricted in the movements within the game, which is still a problem with LOTRO.  They're idea of an unclimbable obstable is way too strict.

Wish I won a lottery, I would definitely make a try for E&B.

The big thing between E&B and EVE is the scale of ships from my understanding. E&Bs largest ships would be on par with with eve's cruisers which are is in the second lowest scale of ships. So the combat is more on par with WWII Battleships squaring off then fighters attacking each other.

Soon they will be upgrading the graphics engine and then after that they will be adding walking in stations.

In eve you can lose everything if you dont watch who's around you and what you are doing.
    o.O

I think the worst thing about shutting down games like these is all the years development time is thrown away and with noone to enjoy it anymore. At least with normal games people can still play them, whilst mmorpgs that have shut down people can't, and it is a shame.

    Thanks Nicoli,

I guess once they add the ability to get out of your ship is will be the closest thing to the gameplay of E&B. EVE looks stunning and I am into the graphics. Too bad when you upgrade your ships, it is just stats and capabilities only so they don't look any different visually than before according to the FAQ.

I will try the free "try before you buy" play for 2 weeks or whatever to see how it is hands-on.

Any advantage to starting with the downloadable client vs. a store boxed version?

Nomadian - I hear ya. After the E&B experience when it was cancelled it was so depressing and felt like it was being yanked out from under us. I really hope other games like EVE as an example have a long life ahead of them.

well i know im not supposed to say this, but the game is dead so it cant cause to much harm.  I heard there was an earth and beyond emulator which someone made, so you could play that way

there is no boxed version of EVE anymore. And there are no pay to use expansions so if you subscribe you will always have the ability to use all the latest content(assuming you can afford/use/trained for it)

I played and loved AC2. I was a strong AC1 follower and despite the two game's differences, I really enjoyed AC2. I stumbled upon the box for it tonight in fact when I was looking for something and I had to glance over the box and read all the features they had for the game (albeit most of which were still being worked out). I dunno, even with only about 300 people playing at one point I wish the game could have stayed online.

Oh yeah i played Earth and Beyond about 9 Months from June03 (Dunno it exists just get Trial Invite from Gamespot i was subscribed in this Time) to April04 and it was my best MMO Experience ever. It wasnt my 1. MMO but it was the first that get me hooked badly.

EnB was btw more like "EQ in Space" with an (imo) really nice Storyline that gets extended every Contentpatch...it has no PvP except some Arena u can Enter just for Fun. For Competition there was something like the "Killsteal" System...basically the Ship/Team that dealed most %-Dmg on Mob get ALL...was pretty fun on 1. Server Andromeda (called Andramada for that :P) The Competition and Trashtalk from and between "Uber"Guilds like Static,Merchant Marines etc. was worth Raiding alone...except for End there was no Instancing every "Raidboss" had some kind of Timer and get a Boss and Loot some nice Stuff infront of others was Priceless.

I tried EvE back then March04 after Suinset was announced for EnB for about 2 Weeks (they had somekind of Free Trial especially for EnB-Customers back then) and it was just not my thing...Optics arent bad but Gameplay is just boring...Mining...Training Skills that takes Days...Mining...Training and so on...zzzzZZZZzzz

Plus the Danger that u can lost everything if Things go really bad turned me off...its just not my Style of Gaming especially since i got a Job and have much less Time for Gaming altogether.

Dunno whats changed since then plus the Fact these Boards are Flooded by EvE-Fanboys...yeah best Option just try it for 2 Weeks and See yourself. :)

I still get a tear in my eye when I think of E&B. Of how fun that game was, and what it could have become over more time.  As soon as EA swallowed Westwood Studios whole, it was the beginning of the end.

After the E&B Sunset, I tried EVE and hated it. Just not my style, and nothing like E&B, other than the fact that it's set in space.  Give it a try, for sure, but don't get your hopes up.  It has some dedicated fans, as you can see on this site.

As for E&B ever coming back, do a Google search for EnB emulator.

    A Little Dab'll Do Ya!

Thanks for your comments. They will help steer me into a direction to pick out a new game. Funny about the mining thing being boring. When I first played E&B I used to hate doing those trade runs between systems. But then it started catching on and I was able to upgrade my ship enough to go hunting alone and doing raids with others. I finally got hooked and then it was cancelled :(

Are there any good space games currently out or coming out besides EVE? I'm not all familiar with the MMORPG world. I've only played E&B and watch my one buddy play WOW countless hours. I'm just not into the middle ages stuff. What do you think about Planetside, Tabula Rasa, SWG, etc? The first two seem interesting becuse they have FPS elemets to them which is my primary gaming experience. I just need something more...
