I think we should all turn it down a notch and be nicer to each other.
That being said I actually like PnC better than WASD, therefore not everyone likes PnC. So if you guys don't want to play the game because it's PnC, don't. I don't want to be in-game and hearing babies crying because it's PnC and not WASD. That's the thing I hate most is complaining...alot. I thought at first this game was weird because of it's non constant PnC then I got used to it, and now I wouldn't trade it for WASD. It actually reminds me of Baldur's Gate.
I started yesterday, still getting a feel for the controls but overall its getting better. About 5 years ago I could not stand wasd, I think its mainly usign something you arent used to. After forcing myself to use it, I was fine. Now trying to go back to p&c, its taking some time to get comfortable with it again.
I don't understand why this is an issue at all. It plays more like a RTS and all RTS's have a very similar control scheme as this game does. There are lots of single player games out there with PnC interfaces as well. It felt quite natural to me.
This game wouldnt be fun with WASD, there's too much micromanagement.
And that is exactly why all the people complaining that GE doesn't use WASD. Are a bunch of <explicit> <explicit>. If you can't stand playing a game without WASD, then plain and simply go some where else. I don't care how "inventive" you think you are. WASD just would not work with the style of play GE involves. As for that one comment about FFXII setup. Please get real. FFXII control system was horrible. It was equal to playing a cross between an offline version of FFXI and Vagrant story. The only redeeming qualities of FFXII were the Character Designs and story itself.

FFXII control system was far better then those ordinary P/C s**t, and far better than the previous battle system... if u dont think so its because u probably didnt get, it was realy cool to be able to settle one char far away to give suport, or spread them so that offensive area magics wouldnt affect all of the chars, the customizable AI aws realy well designed and it probably would reduce all those hotkeys in SotNW, for my self I HATE TO MEMORIZE TONS OF HOTKEYS, having a good number of hotkeys is good, but this number is probably x3 for all the chars.....
I've always hated point and click, but in this game it works quite well. The camera is easy to position and the AI pathing is excellent. I really woulnt want it any other way. P&C lets you move and manage your stances and abilities very easily. With three characters playing at the same time, moving around is the least of your worries.

please excuse any english mistakes XD FFXII was really flawed Imo. It often felt like the game was playing the game for you.. FFXII's controll syystem was not far better then P&C's. FFXII is, unlike SotNW:GE, a slow paced game. If FFXII had the pace of SotNW:GE, then there is no way the controls would have worked. Besides, FFXII uses a controller.

well i cant have an argument for the games pace since i dont have a beta key to know it any better
I agree with you tha it could feel like the game was playing it self but I think that would only happen if wou let it, by just walking around the maps, I mean, u could always play it better by making some better choices for each situation..
so.. does anyone knows how do i get a beta key ??
or will u guys stand my stupid baseless comments for all that long till the game comes to an open beta??
Well anyway, I gave it a go and played the beta. Its terrible with or without wasd just pointless grinding crap over and over and then have them respawn in 10 seconds and kill them again... ugh.... I'm sure I heard something about quests in this game I guess i was misstaken.

wow, you definetly did something wrong in the game because questing is about the only thing you do for the first 20 levels.

Well he probably did like most western gamers do. (This is just my own opinion based on my own play experiences. Doesn't really make it right or wrong. Just what i've seen) First thing most of them do is A) Leave town Start grinding away on mobs.
You'd be surprised at how many people don't even bother to do the Tutorial quest (which results in an easy RNPC card the Reboldeux Soldier). Or any of them newbie quest that are below 12, which can easily net you around 10,000 vis total. Yet only take an hour maybe two for first timers to do.
If the very first thought that crosses your mind when entering the game is. "Where are the mobs for me to kill" then of course you'll more then likely find GE er excuse me SOTNW a grindish game. I'll tell you this though. I can grind out groups of characters to mid 75 to 85 in GE faster then most people can level a single character to 75 in games like EQ2, AO, etc etc.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
I have max level characters in FFXI and WoW (primarily WASD games) and level 61 in Lineage2 (a P&C game). I like to think that I can play either way equally poorly (er I mean well). I think that anyone that will stop downloading a game because they realize it's P&C is overly judgemental.
Saying that is like breaking plans to go on a blind date because you just found out the girl is of a different ethnic origin than you. You are making a blanket statement based on preconcieved notions that have nothing to do with the actual person/game.
From my experience gamers thrive on challenge and its odd that this one challenge is so abhorrent to some people. Now if the movement system really is bad then you move on.
Hmm.. well I'm DL'ing SotNW now and I must admit to having a pretty strong dislike of P&C control schemes wrapped around a standard MMO gameplay setting. The last I tried was RappelZ and that one didn't stay on the harddrive long, after about 10 min I was quite done fighting with the camera and control scheme...
I won't lie and say that hearing that it's P&C isn't a disappointment, however I'll let the DL continue and at least check it out before the final verdict.. it *sounds* like from the description of the bounding box selection and such more RTS anyway. Something of a cross between Diablo 2 and Command & Conqure or Dune2 (for those old enough to remember that one) but instead of Harkkonen siege tanks we have elementalist and pistoleers.
this brings up an interesting question to me though, how does traditional grouping work in this game?? does everyone control 3 people or is it like heroes in guildwars where you can leave the alt-NPC's behind to make room for real players?

Grouping is simple. You pick either 1, 2, or 3 people from your barracks. Then enter the world. You don't really have to take 3 people with you. I solo some of my character quite a bit (don't try this unless you can afford to).
Everyone in the game can control up to 3 people. All the Stock characters and NPC's you collect go into your barracks. Everyone in your barracks is considered part of your family and carries your last name. Shot of Barracks (Click pic to enlarge it):
Basically you have 4 levels in your barracks. Character slots for each barracks are purchased one at a time. You begin with 4 slots of your 1st barracks open to you. Each additional slot in your 1st barracks will cost you 10,000. Each slot in your 2nd will cost you 100,000. Each slot in your 3rd will cost you 500,000. Each slot in 4th will cost you 1,000,000. (See the number tabs in in upper left of picture. They represent the barracks pages). Each barracks page hold 9 characters. Purchasing all the character slots will give you the ability to create up 36 stock and npc characters combined. You can mix and match any characters from any of the 4 barracks pages to form your group. See how the 3 characters of my group are standing up front? Once you select them they will stay up front allowing you to switch between Barrack pages to pick characters that aren't in the 1st barracks.
I probably should have just used an english picture. But basically the upper left box is showing my Family Name, Family Level (you get bonuses for having high family level), How many character slots I have (12/12 meaning I can't create a new character until Increase my barracks slots.), and the barrack page selector (1, 2, 3 or 4).
The two center boxes in lower part. Are for locations. The right box is for starting up in the town you are currently bound to. There is a little tab in that box for select channels. Channels are basically just copies of the game world on the server for preventing lag.
The left box is for picking up where your last group left off. Say you don't want to change your people from the last ones you used. But you still want to pick up where you left off instead of starting back in your bound to town. You would use the left box. The game would start you off where you logged out at.

Well I hope you like it. If I remember correctly Rappelz didn't use pathing. SotNW does and implements it very well.

Agreed, It does however feel very "actiony". You don't get bored waiting for the enemy to get there or anything. Your flailing about wishing you had more time to hit the miniboss with some skills but you can't cuz the scout might not make this next heal and you have a sneaking suspicion there are about 6 baddies stalking up on your wizard's 6. Tons of fun!

Either I or the above poster misunderstood this question. I would say that "everyone controls 3 characters". Grouping is easy, Just go to the "MENU" in the upper left of the screen (default) and then choose "Squad" >"Create Sqaud" target your buddy and "Squad" >"Invite to Squad" . You both will still have full control of all 3 of your characters.
