Best futuristic MMO

I wanna try out a non-fantasy MMO, something sci-fi or something but with good graphics and decent gameplay. Any Ideas?

I voted for SWG because the PRE-CU days were awesome.

    EDIT:

but frankly, I think Planetside is still lots of fun.

Will I be playing pre-CU if I played it today? :/

Try out Anarchy Online, you can play for free if you just stick to the basic game without expansions. Can't go wrong with free and it is a decent game, if a bit of a learning curve, although, not as large as Eve's, which is also a decent game.

    Go Anarchy Online.

SWG recently had a 14-day return to SWG, and this was my first return post NGE, and the game was vastly different. Sure, I liked it at release, but this was just vastly different, and the characters I left on Wanderhome were essentially on a dead server. If I played for 2 hours, I'd be lucky to see 4-5 other people playing. The old hot spots for people...just dead. Now, that could just be the server, but to be honest, it made me realize that I wasnt going to stay beyond the 14.

AO had a brutal, brutal release (I was there for that too), but the dev's did a fairly unique thing, the worked their butts off, and listened to their base, and turned AO into a very solid game. By current standards, it's lacking in graphics, but the game play, and the fact that you can find other people to play with, in my mind, makes it a fairly easy winner in your question.

Whatever you decide, good luck to ya!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't play SWG in it's current state, it's a pathetic excuse for a game.

Out of those three I'd say SWG is your best bet.  Not a whole lot of people around, unfortunately, but I like the game better than the other two choices.

If you are willing to stick it out for the long haul, EVE is probably worth the time, but the game is a pain to learn how to play.

There's some other Sci-fi games coming out as well near the end of this year and beginning of next.  Also, not technically Sci-fi, but CoH isn't a fantasy game and is fun to play.

I'd have to say Anarchy Online. Never tried Planetside, and SWG is crap nowadays.

hmmmmm.....thats a hard one....i would have to say Anarchy cus great community great graphics....actions good....role playing is great....expansions all u have to do is buy em all in a package....and then its free forever...or just get it for free....its amazing...SWG i dont c many people still playin but i heard the community is growin....EVE is very hard to learn sumtimes unless ur hardcore and used to it....if u want easy to learn mmorpg thats non-fantasy choose anarchy online....

I tried Anarchy Online and it was truly shocking.

After having played EQ2 for a while, I can safely say The graphis sucked.

The feel of the controls sucked.

I didnt even hit level 2 before I quit.

I couldn't find a general menu where I could get help or change the settings of my graphics/keyboard and certain aspects of the game.

OK after having experienced that shocking game, I'll change my question.

Which sci-fi MMO has the best graphics and is easy/fun to play?

back in the day this was possibly the most experience to play as a game. Nowadays i dont play it but i am thinking of re-subbing because hey  i remember all pitched 200 a side battles around a small bridge which is always fun, combine that with lots and lots of weaponry and then add in jeeps, a few tanks of different styles n class, airborn gunships n transports then like battle mechs. so ye it can be good! Graphics r bit out dated but still very playble!

    Currently playing : Darkfall
    Character name : Aeola Anara
Played: Almost every P2P MMO you can get your hands on, notably:
Daoc, SWG, LOTRO, WAR, AoC + Dozens more

As a fan of Sci-fi games, I would advise avoiding all the current sci-fi games.

Neocron is worse than Anarchy Online in both bugs, bad graphics, and unfun gameplay
    Planetside is pretty dated too.
Eve is ok, but not very much action. Great if you're into Sim Economics.
SWG? Not near as fun as Pre-CU/Pre-NGE, but if you don't mind a long diku-mud type grind, it can still be ok.

Your best bet is just to wait and see how Tabula Rasa, or Huxley turn out. Barring that, there's also the Warhammer 40K MMO coming some time in the future.

Sadly, if you're a fan of sci-fi over elves and orcs, you kinda get the short and dirty end of the stick.

SWG is free to try for 14 days, and you get to play the full game on the trial too.  www.tryswg.com

Although it's 4 years old, it still has graphics that rival those of todays MMO's.  It also has many different gameplay options available.  While it caters to your typical combat roles, it also has one of the more detailed crafting systems out there, player housing, a space simulator, player events, has one of the more indepth creature handling/beast master systems and many more.

SWG was ok, I found Anarchy Online to be boring, and Planetside is still fantesticle.

MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan

I'm a total pre-CU SWG fanboy, but I'm also open enough to realize that the current iteration is not that bad.  Honestly, it's no worse than any of the other current generation games.  In some ways, it's still far better because it offers more things to do.  While population is a problem, it's because there are so many servers.  Other than WoW, SWG has by far the most servers.  Do a little research and pick one of the most populated servers.  I think Bria and Chilastra (sp?) are the most populated at the moment.

I understand that its release was less than smooth, and that there are "unique" aspects of the game that cause some MMO'ers to simply avoid the product altogether...still, Auto Assault...IMHO...is a diamond in the rough is there ever was one.

Also, Jumpgate is an extremely deep sci-fi game that just happens to be getting a HUGE graphical update announced to the media on June 22.

They both have trials available.  If anyone wants a buddy code for AA, feel free to send me a PM.

    Good luck in your search!

I agree that Auto Assault could have been something worth playing.  But it never caught on, so I heard the populations were pathetically low.  From what I remember of the trial, I was surprised that the game didn't attract more players.  I guess word of mouth was really negative and it never managed to pull itself out of the hole.
