I don't know what youre missing out but i know what exactly i am missing out. A girlfriend! xD
Have you seen the Pure Pwnage episodes where Jeremy tries to go out and pwn some girls? He finds out it's not as easy as he thought, their defenses are better than he expected, and he ends up getting pwned himself.
It's hard to impress girls with tales of pwnage.
He does finally meet a girl who plays WoW, though, and falls in love, lol.

I play mmorpgs, sometimes for longer than 10 hours a day on a day off when I have nothing to do.
I am a student. I am going in for a major in chem, my g/f is also a university student, plays just as much and is getting a degree in bio-chem.
We keep our grades up, but not only is 15 bucks cheap in terms of other activities, but it gives us something to do rather than get baked and drunk like everyone else I know that doesn't play games. Heck, I think playing lots of mmorpg's has kept my grades up and prevented hundreds of hang-overs. Not to mention the money its saved me. I eat much better than most people I know, and I spend much less.
Playing a mmorpg doesn't mean ignoring your family. My little cousin loves watching me play. We have lots of parents in our guild. They tend to play less, but everyone needs a break, and logging on to vent and doing a few quests with us is a great way to take some time away from your little bundles of energy for a little bit without actually leaving the house.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
I thought the point of life was to be happy. The path to achieve it is yours and yours alone... be it being a junky and sleeping in the trash or prostitute your beautiful mind has a prestigious VP of a big company. Just be true to yourselves and stop the holy life bullcrap.
Sure a dad has responsabilities, but if the kids are well fed, do okay in school and have big smiles on their faces... well... dad can pat himself on the back for a job well done and think about his own smile in the face. An unhappy, stressed, burned out dad is not good for the kids either. Also, enforcing "quality time" with your family might be more of a disaster than spending fewer time. Family dynamics are different in each family.
I think the OP just needed to vent and at the same time tell a "successfull life" story. Kids have it rough in that age an most of the time parents enforce their views of what life should be. Think it's refreshing to see that being both mmo gamer and a dad can be achieved. Kids need to hear this instead of : "You dim wit! Get of your lazy arse and do something or you'll end up in a looser appartment with cheetos on your fat belly." Most of the time, it's that phrase that makes them entrench themselves into their addiction, be it: drugs, party, food, tv or mmos. It's sad and ironic that a good portion of social problems comes from people that try too much.

I am a 37 year old father of two. I own my own business (serviced base) which made me enough money to buy a house, car and I am able to start another business in another country by the end of the year. I have been around the world twice and have studied 9 different cultures (not including sub cultures) from 9 different countries. I have an education and all my little toys litter the house. I have a wife a dog a cat a car and a scooter. I run a website that I pay for and never charge to use for Dads.
I go to BBQ's, weddings, funerals, parties, pubs, dinners, sport games, walks, gym and I volunteer once a month. I also snow ski and rock climb on occasion.
Congrats on all your success in life, it makes me very envious of you I myself am trying to become a film director, but it's so hard when you have to start on your own and have literally NO money other than your own to spend. Lets not forget bills to pay lol!
Or are you just assuming my life is meaningless because I would rather play an MMO for 4 hours instead of watching talk shows?
Do not pass your problems on others because you do not know how to schedule your time. You need to learn how to deal with your own problems.
I don't think they're necessarily referring to people like yourself because you obviously do have a life outside of an MMO. The message is more directed towards teenagers or college kids that spend way more than 4 hours a day playing an MMO.
I think the problem with mmorpg is overplayed. The average mmorpg player spent over 800 hours pr. year and thats is a lot if you ask me. I think people get addiction to the game and play it non-stop. Then they stop be social with friends, sports, familiy events. I have been down the road myself, but now I am out of it and only play 3-4 hours pr. week in Guild Wars now.
Originally posted by Battlekruse The average mmorpg player spent over 800 hours pr. year and thats is a lot if you ask me.
That would be just over 2 hours per day. Considering many people (including myself) play more than 10 hours a day on weekends, I'd say an average of 2 hours per day is incredibly reasonable.
What you have to keep in mind with "averages" such as these is that they are not indicative of the population as a whole. Rather, it is an estimation of the middle ground between two extremist groups. We have the people who typically play only a few hours per week, and the people who play several hours a day, every day. I doubt there is any kind of "in-between" for these two groups.
I am a 19 year old soon-to-be Student who does nothing but gaming the whole day.
What exactly am I missing? Nothing, to be honest.
All people should decide theirselves what they want to experience, what they want to sacrifice to have more time for something else...
In the end, nothing matters anyway. You don't have to have kids, there are too many People on this world already. You don't have to do anything really, you could decide to murder someone just to get into jail, so you don't have to bother about food or a job anymore
What are we living for? Nothing really, or better said: Everyone should find his own reason.
If I decide that I live to play MMOs, well, so be it.
Yeah, and live from the Taxes other ppl pay, great plan!
lol 4 hours... let me guess you have a level 70 in greens on a WoW pve server
Let me guess... you have a full decked out lvl 70 in wow wearing all the "phat lewt" from all the raid instances. I guess spending all that time in game will eventually make you thousands of dollars, buy you a car, a house and find you that significant other with which you will start a family.... but oh wait...
The person that made that comment is who those posts are directed at.
To the OP:
Good for you man, you got your life under control with a healthy balance of all things
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
So I was looking for holes in your post and found one!
Hey, I'm a woman, and I can't help but be disturbed that you placed "wife" in the same sentence as a dog, a cat, a car, and a scooter. That's in no particular order, right?
You're 37, it should be expected you should be able to manage your life and playing say mmos. For kids I don't know whether they are so wised up. You see posts on WoW forums all the time of situations where people have withdrawn and exclusively play mmos, and you hear tales on other gaming sites where x and y may know someone who is doing this. Mmo companies are aware this is an issue as well which is why games like WoW and EQ have added some feature which helps people manage their time.
I don't know what the solution is but it isn't a nice thought that kids are forgoing their study and ultimately their possible career playing mmos.

I don't understand how you think the "missing out in life" statement is directed too you at all if what you are posting about your life is true (/internet). If you are already established in life and have a nice job, family, etc... it's not a issue to play a MMO while doing other things in life.
If you are a teenager or adult who has no life/gets horrible grades, has a crappy job ( or no job ! ), lives with his/her parents while playing mmo's all day long then this would be good prime example of someone who is missing out on what life has to offer. You do not get a nice job, family, and everything else by just playing MMO's all day long. The good life does not just fall into your lap unless you are a trust fund baby or you win the lottery. At some point in time you will have to put MMO's aside to dedicate yourself to real life's needs/wants if you are not any of the later and want a good life. I think you are over-reacting IMHO.
You're a slave man, slave and a weakling! You have alloved that which is unique to you to be turned into a pop cultural poster of a succesful and established life.
You are not missing anything because you don't even exist, you are an automaton, what you see is what you repeat, you don't need religion because you have no soul, you are perfect, perfectly empty of anything real.

if you find one you like send me a PM....I'd like to find one myself....or if you know a bunch of people who would be interested I'll start a discussion board myself if you help to moderate it.
Missing out on life is more dependant on the point of view of who you speak with. You may feel that overall your life is successful, as you have money, a car, a house ,and a family, but then again this is the basic dream of a person seeing themselves as successful.
To others they may think that you haven't really lived until you've skydived, or ridden a horse. Perhaps to some time could be much better spent reading a book, or learning a new language. Perchance, even to some you aren't living unless you are out every night at bars, boasting a jet-set life, always living in the "now".
To present yourself as vexed because of a challenge to your lifestyle choice makes me personally wonder what the monetary gain of your post was. Maybe I missed an original post that attacked you personally because of your choice of hobby. Either way, on these forums what you said could be true, or it could be false. Knowing that you do all these things and you see your life as fulfilled should be the end all of any conversation that is aimed toward your character.
However, on a lesser end, there are many successful alcoholics, sports stars, drug users, and so on, all of which have all the same things and have done the same things you have posted here. To these people looking back on how they live their lives, instead of spending time playing MMO's could very well spend it looking at the bottom of a bottle, would that mean that they weren't missing out on life either?
f you find one you like send me a PM....I'd like to find one myself....or if you know a bunch of people who would be interested I'll start a discussion board myself if you help to moderate it.

I myself am a 30 yr old dad and husband. I've put MMO's on the back burner for now because I chose to further my education and obtain my MCP certification. However before I went back to school, my MMO time basically took the place of my t.v. time. My wife and I don't enjoy the same kind of programming so we don't usually watch t.v. together unless it's something outragiously hilarious like Flavor of Love or I Love NY!
My oldest child is 5, so I leave her to her Zack and Cody and Hannah Montana. T.V. is basically a bore, so why not exchange that time with something more interactive like say an MMO!
