Any fellow Mudders here?

As the title of the topic says. Basically, I have to say, even with all the pretty graphics and nice sound effects, a well made MUD can outdo any of these multi-million dollar productions in depth of a story, originality in content, or even gameplay. I sure wish some MMO companies and developers would take time out and try a MUD themselves, maybe they could learn something.

I play Syrnia from time to time. Been playing today, as a matter of fact. And I agree, if devs would concentrate more on story and actual gameplay, the backbones of a good mud, there would be alot more variety and depth to satisfy just about everyone.

never tried a MUD, but im guessing they can be a good time waster when your bored...

    suggest any good ones?

oh and are they turnbased where you can only do like 5 actions per hour etc?

One particular MUD I like is Aeonian Dreams, which uses a skills based system, which is basically a stripped down ROM/Diku codebase, but it's still nicer than being shoe horned into an arch-type. For example, I'm building a whip wielding illusionist, which uses dodging and avoidance skills to survive in combat. It seems to work well in combination with my illusion spells.

Zork was my last textbased attempt at having fun, after that the colors and weird sounds of the C64 won me over. Never tried a MUD really.

I don't MUD as often as I used to. I'm currently working on a MUD server for a specific project I have in mind.

The last MUD that I really enjoyed was Aardwolf. I would also recommend Armageddon MUD and Dart MUD.

Played DragonRealms for awhile. I would have to agree from my limited experience with MUDs that they have a much higher degree of functionaltiy and depth than the MMORPG genre has been able to present so far.

Minus the graphics I think MUDs are far superior in every way.  Unfortunately after WoW the MUD community took a nosedive.

I never understood, what is a MUD? There were two that I played that people called MUD's, 4th Coming and Wyvren. They just seemed like bad graphic MMO's. Anyone have an insight on what really describes a MUD?

check out the resource center at the MUD connector for a more in-depth explanation. You can also poke around MUD Magic if you're still confused.

BTW, MUDs aren't MMOs with crappy graphics.... They're MMOs with NO graphics. Although most MUD scholars would turn that around and say that MMOs are just MUDs with graphics..... I'm siding with the scholars on this one.

A MUD is a text base (purely) online multi-user RPG - or Multi User Dungeon/Domain.  With a true mud you can use a telnet client but a good mud client is the way to go, and on window, zMud rules.

Medievia.  Still play it every now and then.

If anyone wants to check it out (or any MUD for that matter), from a terminal just type:

    telnet mudname.com port#

    IE -

    telnet medievia.com 4000

You can also use a MUD client like MudMaster or ZMUD.

MUDs interest me from a historical perspective, but I honestly just can't play them. I don't read as fast as I'd like, and I usually end up getting drowned out in text. It just becomes noise after a while. Pity, I'd probably play them if I could read faster than I do.

I've tried over 1000 MUDs in my time.  I've help create multiple MUDs.  So to make a long story short, yes, I love MUDs.  Although, recently it has been increasingly difficult to commit to them anymore.  I don't know if I'm just growing out of them or if I'm just flat out sick of them.  Who knows, but, they sure are the source for todays MMORPG world.

Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.
