One thing just struck me, watching te upcoming release schedule on the first page here at mmorpg.

Well not really news as it has been debated time and again, but I think it needs even more contemplation.

Within 6 months we will have a massive amount of new and long awaited games hitting the market. Almost to a degree that we will get just as many new "bigname" games within half a year that we have had now for like 6 years. Now the question is were do these companies think all those people will come from? I agree that this is probably the fastest growing market online today, faster even then pr0n. :) But still I can not help to wonder how these games will fill their quota of players, this genre will need an influx of 30-50% new players within six months time, thats quite a few million players.

Do you think it is possible, or are these companies trying to chew of more then they can eat?

Would be real interesting to look back on this in six months and see how our genie powers are. :)

/edit, sorry for the typos in the voting choises, cont find a way to correct them.

/edit2, sorry for the typos in the first /edit, I can correct them but lets just see how many /edits I will need to write. :)

I think the recent hype surrounding upcoming MMORPGs (mainly EQ2 and WoW) is a bit exaggerated. Although, I believe the hype will provide for a massive influx of new players who will most likely enjoy either of the games, hopefully these players will provide for a healthier world of MMORPGS image

I to am sure these new mega games will bring a lot of people to us. But enough, really?

My big fear is that these huge mastodonts will squash many of the smaller mmorpg's under massive marketing campaigns. And by that we might loose a lot of the originality and see only bland clones of the best working bussiness model.

It's the thing I've never entirely got my head round about competition, but it does seem to work. Think about it - if WoW and EQII weren't coming out at the same time, there just wouldn't be this massive public (and publicity generating) war between the two. It's got a lot of people interested - and other MMPORPGs are springing up around them, circling like vultures to pick up the dissafected souls who fall out of SOE and Blizzard's bloated carcasses.

It's like how you always get take-aways grouped together. A chinese opens up somewhere, then another two and a curry house open nearby to try and lure away the people that they already know are in that area after a takeaway.

I think a lot of the MMORPGs that spring up will go the way of all flesh, but the lumbering giants like WoW and EQII will survive, along with the ones which carve themselves out a specific niche - e.g. Reclamation for in-depth roleplaying and Face of Mankind for twitch-based combat combined with an immersive setting.
