As the bname suggests, SOE will be making a spy-based MMORPG.
My apologies, but I find it a little difficult to finish the article with such a strange typo found in the very begining, I will attempt to do so though.

    Oh no, SOE?

Damn. And I had high hopes that this MMORPG could be good

Gunplay - OK got it. What about the MMO side? How will that be handled?

Exactly what I was thinking. I can see The Agency ending up right where MXO is: in the recycle chute.

umm do u even play mxo? im a mxo vet and mxo is no where close to the recycle BIN....

Not fantasy so it won't grab the mainstream audience but DAMN that looks awesome. Hopefully SOE doesn't ruin this one (lololol)

Between The Secret World and The Agency, are modern-day settings the next trend for MMOs? One wonders. I've been hoping for some modern-day settings for a while. Not apocalyptic stuff, exactly, but the modern world with some sort of poignant twist. A non-nationalistic civil war of some sort, being fought not over resources or religion but rather some new ideals. I can think of plenty of possibilities, that's for certain.

So, between The Secret World and The Agency, my eyes are peeled.

Yes, I'm sure it is given a very high priority on SOE's list and also has more than enough subscribers that it could survive on it's own without Station Pass.

Let me rephrase for you then: bargain bin, at best.

And yes I played it. And I regret every minute of it. Wanna support Warner Brothers' throw aways? More power to ya. But face reality: MXO is VERY close to the recycle bin gamewise, and IS in the recycle bin of most people who try it.

True FPS combat or not?   If it is that psuedo fps combat they put into SWG:NGE or what you might find in Tabula Rasa...no thank you, I'll pass.  You watch SOE will screw this up.  There will be no real FPS combat, no balistics, no line of sight...if anyone can mess this up it is SOE.   I wouldn't hold my breath people.

Oh and one other thing.  Anyone care to bet it is a Spy game that is a total rip-off of he game CoH/CoV?  It'll probably play something very similar in nature, but with one huge difference - it'll be a grind from hell.

excellent, finally we are getting away from the boring cookie-cutter fantasy mmogs. kudos to them.

As long as the game is not entirely instance based it could be quite fun. Hopefully they give a choice of pvp vs pve servers. Heres hoping its going to be like a Hitman Online in real time, the turn based wow styleof play is getting old and with all real players using adsl2+ and above i cant see why not. SOE certainly has the resources to have country based servers ie: US, Euro, Australian, Oceanic to enable a more realtime fps style mmog.

Lets hope the g/director of this game is in no way and has never been associated with SWG. Then all will be well.

heres hoping the release date isnt too far away, they have some stiff competition in this market now, they cant afford to make blunders like SOE have in the past- as we all know SOE is financially fragile so to speak (for a behemoth).

To be honest the game looks pretty good.

But SoE? I'm sorry i'll have to pass. Been there and done that with SoE.

Sounds kinda neat, but only time will tell.

    Family man first, Gamer second!

ArmySurplus makes no apologies if someone other than him has already posted his reply in part or otherwise. He can’t be expected to read every single post on a thread and makes no promise to do so. If you posted a similar reply before him you undoubtedly stole his thoughts and used them without his written authorization. Please return to your post and edit it so that his post is the first to state whatever the hell he was thinking at the time. Thank you!

but this is news to mmorpg.com?

Not exactly up to date, wouldn't you say.
Actually, just as a point-of-note, Joe was at Gamer Day on may 9th, as were many other members of the gaming media. SOE placed an embargo on the information until its release today.

So, yes, it is up-to-date and yes, the official announcement of a new MMORPG from a major publisher is indeed news to any gaming website.

    Hope that clears things up.

If it was "embargoed", then how were the same details given in a one-page preview piece in a gaming mag over a month ago?

Couldn't you have just quoted PC Gamer?

Sorry, IMO, this is "old news"...you got scooped, end of story!

It doesnt look bad. I will have to wait and see what kind of game controls they are going to use. Also, I hope SOE continues to learn from their past mistakes.

Depending on how this game is going, if they screw it up, the company will continue to go to the evil side and not get hardly and money nore positive comments of this game. If they made this game better just like they did to everquest 2, and people like it. They will go back to the good side like they use to... this game is now determines the alignment side of SOE. Will they join EA and there evil actions, or will they join with Square-enix, and other good companys and start listening to the people wants and so forth.

So does anyone know if Brad McQuaid or John Smedley is going to have any part in this?  I tried to see if I could find their names in the news article but I couldn't find them.

I really dont care who makes this game as long as it is a step away from fantasy its worth looking at. Its pretty sad when I get excited about a game just because it doesnt have elves and dragons. The whole market is flooded with the garbage. Nice to see someone try something different even if it is SOE.

I mostly agree with you, especially since I love anything spy or technothriller related. But why do I have a sneaking suspicion that with SOE at the helm the following could happen:

    1. At first you won't be able to play James Bond

    2.  three months later you'll need to spend thousands of hours hunting down encrypted messages in order to become James Bond.

    3. a year later James Bond will be a starting class and you'll see dozens of James Bonds battling it out with dozens of Dr. Nos and Goldfingers outside of the shuttle err I mean airport.

This could be great if they can pull it off !!
What I'd like to know is what would happen if you got caught spying ?
Just an xp penality or would you Agency have to rescue you the later could be great for missions trying to escape or be rescued or rubbish if you just sit in a cell waiting!!

Heh, even as an NGE player, I had to laugh at that one.
