I've seen a lot of people lately trying to compare this game to EQ2. For me, personally, after three attempts, I just could not get into EQ2, even though on paper it should have been an ideal game for me. It could be the same for some people with LotRO. No matter how many recommendations people give, some people may still find after playing it that the game just isn't for them. (Let me say though, with LotRO, it definitely opens up a lot as you level up, I'm sad when I see people who stopped playing in the early levels, because the game does get better).
Personal preferences aside, the biggest problem with comparing this game to EQ2 is that EQ2 has been out for over two years and has already seen a lot of expansion and tweaking. LotRO has a very aggressive expansion plan ahead of it, through regular free content publishes and future paid expansion.
People who decide to power level through LotRO may find the current game lacking after a couple months. People in the middle of the leveling curve will find new content filling in bare spots in certain level ranges before they ever reach those levels.
For people looking to buy now, the first major content update hits this week, so the game will already be more expansive for them by the time they hit the mid levels. More updates will continue to expand the game as time goes on.
Turbine is not following the WoW expansion strategy, where aside from high end raids, there is nothing new in the world for over two years before people get something new. This game will continue to expand, with new regions, dungeons, instances, items, monsters, etc... through out the coming year and beyond.
IMO, it's already an excellent game, but the planned rate of expansion and frequent free content updates greatly increase it's value moving forward.
Would i be able to Solo and accomplish many things in game?
How intense is the grinding?
( Do they make it fun and interactive during the hours of mindless killing of mobs?)
Is it Fun?
I love Tolkein's books and even the movies, does it really take alot from it?
( Do the Devs do a good job bringing the pages to life?)
Is it Fun?
So i will be heading to the store in a few hours and will pick this up if the answers to my questions spark my will to buy it.
If not i beleive i will buy EQ2's newer expansion with full game and pick back up from where i left off when it was released.
Any comments would be great! Whats your take on the game!
As with any game, the only way to tell if you'll like it is to try it out yourself with a buddy key. Personally, I was expecting to love this game. I love the lore and was completely drawn in by the marketing.... but I held off buying it until I could test it out with a free trial.
I was extremely disappointed. Obviously, this is based on what I like in a MMORPG, but here was my take in the short time I played it.
1) It felt very linear and scripted. My first dungeon experience was instanced and a scripted event. I felt like I was playing single-player Diablo (which I loved) and not a real MMORPG.
2) Personally, the graphics don't do it for me and I know this is a style preference. Despite great performance (no lag, 100ish fps) with absolutely all setting maxed I just can't get into the 'cartoonish' type graphics. I know it requires much less in terms of system requirements, and some of the stylized scenery was nice, I just simply don't like the graphics.
3) The community seemed, well, absent. The game looked extremely soloable, but I never got a group once in my 10 days of free play. Nor did I see anyone looking for a group. I also saw very little happening in /shout /ooc. In fact, I never saw more than one person at a time... not even a duo working on a quest together.
4) Quests seemed very simplistic and reptitive. I just didn't have any fun here.
All in all, the game was very boring to me and seemed rather shallow. Personally it was not for me. Perfectly marketed, based on the greatest story of all time, I found no bugs and performance was not and issue...... but it just felt empty.

2) Cartoonish? I don't see that at all. But I can't say what you see and don't see...matter of pref like you said.
3) This is the only thing I would really take issue with. In 10 days of free play you didn't group? Ok, but to say you didn't see anyone looking for a group, or didn't see any action in OOC, or people doing quests together is comletely wrong!
Either you had all your chat channels turned off, or you never got passed the newbie starter area and advanced into the "big world". Not knowing what race your character was, I'm guessing it couldn't have been human (starting in Breeland) at all...and even the Shire where I started was pretty busy with people looking for groups. The community is VERY large, and it's not at all tough to get a PUG, or join a good kinship and find people to quest with as a group. Your analysis on this is way off. only playing 10 days (not going to guess what level you even got to as it's not relevant) and saying there is no community or grouping, is like watching the first 10 minutes of an action movie and leaving to tell everyone "it sucked, was disappointing and had very little action in it"....
I'm not digging into you or anything as I think you gave a pretty reasonable reply, just this one issue I feel the need to clear up..

Yep, I understand. 10 days isn't a lot of time, I was really hoping there'd be a hook to draw me in, but for me it didn't work. I know with the other MMORPG I play there's a fairly decent hook early on, but the game really opens up wide at lvl 30 or so.
My chat channels were all on, but you are probably right about the newbie area, I got to lvl 10-11 or so very quickly and thought I had finished the initial rite of passage so to speak. At least in my area, most folks were very conent with soloing, and just didn't seem interested in grouping.
All that said, it's a preference and I just couldn't get engaged with the game. However, I know many folks love this game.

Don't buy.
LOL @ everyone talking about gfx, they forget to mention that gameplay sucks.
I've played EQ2 since launch and played LOTRO through open beta. My advice is to get the EQ2 package if you want anything more than an easy, casual game. A couple of comments, if you don't mind.... I played EQ2 for a year and loved it , but seemingly, you haven't played LOTRO too much (or at all?) EQ2 Pros:
A lot more content. - are you comparing Lotro at launch to EQ2 at launch? Why not? - And why would you compare to EQ2 at launch? The OP is asking opinions about the PRESENT situation, whether or not he should play LoTRO or the CURRENT EQ2, not LAUNCH EQ2, so I think it's fair to say, right now EQ2 has more content than LoTRO. It's not a battle of, which game was better at launch, because we all know EQ2 was in the shits when it was first released.
More race and class choices. (and no customization in EQ2 later on....) - I don't think customization had anything to do with this person's point...his comment was literal: There are more classes and races. And are you referring customization in reference to LoTRO? Because LoTRO lacks character customization as well, so I don't think either game wins out in this component.
Four starting zones instead of two. (Excuse me? Archet, Shire, Elf/Dwarf start areas? MINIMUM 3 in LOTRO...) Better character animations, more realistic graphics (but higher hardware requirements). (char movement in EQ2 is shite, not better than LOTRO imho) - I have to disagree with you on this one, EQ2s movement is smoother, and doesn't have the "delayed" feeling you get when you play LoTRO sometimes. And the jumping in LoTRO is horrible, not to mention the awkward choices of facial features when creating your character.
More mature and helpful community. (absolutely not - lotro totally mature) Huge amount of end-game content. (again, compare to EQ2 at launch please...) - Refer to first comment.
LOTRO Pros:
More casual, less need for grouping Unique classes Nice scenery with lower hardware requirements Unique player vs. monster player Less grinding unless you want traits and virtues Tolkien
Would i be able to Solo and accomplish many things in game?
Yes
How intense is the grinding?
( Do they make it fun and interactive during the hours of mindless killing of mobs?)
Umm, crafting is simple and can get rather boring, PvMP is a great way to shake the grind off and the quests themselves are the usual boring stuff with a few exceptions, the main storyline quests are also a good break.
Is it Fun?
Depends what you find fun, if you have played past mmos, then you won't find much new here.
I love Tolkein's books and even the movies, does it really take alot from it?
( Do the Devs do a good job bringing the pages to life?)
It all depends on if you think the game represents Tolkien's world or not, I think it does.
Is it Fun?

I would suggest waiting for future mmos if you have already been through the WoW stage.

The post that I was replying to was comparing EQ2 and LOTRO on points that are unfair.
EQ2, on the other hand has no community whatosever on the lower levels. LOTRO is full of people on the whole level range (1-50). This is pretty important in a MMO
"LoTRO lacks character customization as well," - that is complete BS - I have +6 level traits which modify my skills/stats in a way that I can play completely different roles - still at lvl 33 only! There is an *endless* number of combination to every basic characters in LOTRO. In EQ2? You get a fixed toon that will always be 100% same, with same skills every time. That is quite boring, eh?
If the OP buys LOTRO, he gets a couple of weeks playtime (on hardcore level!), and an expansion that is *FREE* and comes out tomorrow.
And pls. try to memorize, as this been said many many times on these forums: the animation is not "delayed" by mistake. It is caused by timers and cooldowns, it is intended this way and it is perfectly normal... actions take real time!

If you have not played WoW or EQ2 before, then my advise is don't buy this game. In my opinion both EQ2 and WoW is much much better than LOTR, in all areas. So, try those games first since they have trial packages available.

The best thing I can say is try it yourself. Nobody can tell you what you should play or not to play.
Look at SWG, the old players left after the NGE etc, but there are new players that enjoy the game, the like the combat and how the game is put together.
Some people play SWG just because its Star Wars, no other reason.
I played LotRO for a bit but personally didnt like it. The game is very well done though, nice graphics, seemed to be very stable while I was playing, lots of quests etc., it just didnt do anything for me.
You on the otherhand may love it, nobody on these boards can tell you to play or not to play, get a buddy key or something and try it for a few weeks and see for yourself and make up your mind.
Everyone likes/dislikes different things, some like the same things for different reasons, thats why we are all unique.

Why do I have to give reasons? Like you will believe. It seems to me that you are a fanboi. Reasons are beyond your grasp. So, it is just a waste of my time to reason. I am only suggesting any new players to try out EQ2 or WoW before this one (at no cost), so they can make a better judgement on what suits best for them.

lol, wow man. Why do you have to give reasons? Why recommend something without any sort of comparative reasoning? That should answer itself...I am very surprised you would even need to ask why you should give reasons when recommending something. A recommendation without reasoning on a forum is pretty pointless as no one is just going to say "hey, this guy says do this, so I will!!!" People look for explinations and reasons before they make their own decisions...not just listen to what someone thinks they should do!
Reasons are beyond your grasp...lol...I think on second read this reply was intended to be a joke.

Ok, tell me the difference between the following two statements:
1. EQ2 is better than LOTR
2. EQ2 has better graphics than LOTR because it uses a higher number of polygons for each graphic, and is well designed by an experienced art team with many years of experience
As for you the second statement gives a reason. But, think about it this way, what would you believe? The amount of trust given by the first statement is still the same as the second statement. If a person don't believe the first statement, it is highly unlikely he will believe the second. After all, it is me who tells you this, and unknown person who you have never met. If it was someone you knew and trust, then trustability of both statements would rise much higher.
That is why I said, there is no point of giving a reason.

We obviously look for different information when researching a game. Simply saying any one game is better than another is just someone giving opinion...there are rankings on the site where you can find out which game has the popular opinion. I look for comparisons and explinations as I know others on here do as well. I cant even say how many times I have read negative personal reviews of games and wanted to try it based on that because the individual posting said WHY they didnt like the game and what they didnt like, sounded good to me.
Your two examples while I see what you are getting at I think are flawed for a different reason because graphics/artwork are very much personal preference and its hard to say which is better than the other. All your two examples make me think is that EQII would require more system resources, which...it does.
I think the point here which for whatever reason you decided to declare the poster a fanatic of the game is that just telling people to try older games without any reasons comes off as very elitish and makes it seem like you are a "know it all".
I have played all three titles and was very curious to see WHY you think people should play WoW and EQII before LoTRo, you could have some very valid reasons to recommend this but...without them being presented it just comes off as an arrogant post.
Beautiful scenery at times, but worn, cliche gameplay. As much it wants not to be, its still apart of that EQ/WoW/etc generation of MMOs that most are growing tired of, Turbine simply adding some things to spice the usuals up.
Before we all get too far into ranting about "LOTRO doesn't bring anything new to the table" keep in mind that since Day One, Turbine always said LOTRO would be a traditional (and "safe") MMORPG, not going out on a limb with "new" or "experimental" things like AoC and WAR are attempting.

I am only suggesting any new players to try out EQ2 or WoW before this one (at no cost), so they can make a better judgement on what suits best for them.
