Hey all, just a little background first. I've been playing video games since i was 4, and played my first mmo at i think it was 13 or 14 maybe with meridian59...played every mmo since then for the most part. I'm now 21, and after taking a bunch of random ass classes in college i've finally decided i want to have a career in the video game industry. Be it in mmo's or console based games. I won't be starting any new classes until the fall however, so i have a few questions that perhaps some of you might be able to help me with.

I'd really like to get a better understanding of the inner workings of a computer, like messing with windows and knowing what im doing rather than going to majorgeeks.com and reading a tutorial on how to setup my services to get my computer to run better without really knowing wtf im doing. I'd also like to know about the computer itself, like what parts can do what or how to build a computer myself. And finally, what sort of classes should i be looking at when i go back to school - i think this part confuses me the most.

At any rate, suggestions..comments...maybe a website to look at for info...Anything helpful :)

Thanks in advance!

Try taking a look around Devmaster, but don't post anything there till you read a bit.

If you want to build your own computer, ask for suggestions at the Hardware section of the VN forums. The folks there will hold your hand and walk you through your first computer build, suggesting budgets and hardware to purchase.

MMORPG Maker is good for discussions about MMORPG engines that someone with a limited budget can afford. At the moment you won't be able to make WoW with one of these engines, but it's a good way to get started making terrains, models, and writing scripts, before diving into serious C++ coding.

You can do either 2 options to learn about computers: (Option 1) Go to your local bookstore and pickup a book called "A+ certification" that will teach you all the basics on computers. (Option 2) Take up a class in "Computer Networking".
