Crom, I hope the instruction manual or tutorials don't say, "his or her" or worse yet!, do the NWN thing of alternating between masculine and feminine when describing classes.  I'd like a company to understand the core audience of an adult game already has a difficult enough time  immersing into a brutal fantasy world without catering to 13 year old girls who some f**k wit decided needed protection when playing an adult game (mature ladies that would actually read a conan novel would prefer the honesty)
Show the nipples, deduct strength for female characters (this would also elliminate most males playing female to gain favors), have npc prostitutes, concubines and slaves, don't make fighter class npc's 50/50 male/female, be brutal and honest to Howard and every other writer that inspires us to play this stuff, and I guarantee that when we chop someone's head off, it will feel more like we really did it when drinking later in the tavern.

Believe it or not I agree with this poster.  I think they should consider that females are generally the weaker of the two sexes.  I'd have no problem playing a female avatar that doesn't have the same strength stats as the male toons - however, there is this thing called dexterity(agility) and if I recall in Howards world he created female warriors Valeria being one of them.   In the story Red Nails, Howard tells us Valeria is more then capable of defeating men in battle because of her agility and grace with swords.   Then there is the fact that Valeria, like Conan, had the tenacity to survive at all cost.  She faught as much with her brain as she did with her swords, as did Conan, and both had this strength of will that enabled them to over come what is put before them.   If you remember this was something Conan admired in Valeria.  Here is an excerpt from Red Nails - last Conan Story written by Howard.

"Then be on your way,” she advised. “I have other plans.”

“Don't be a fool!” He showed irratation for the first time. “You can't keep on wandering through this forest.”

    “I can if I choose.”

“But what do you intend doing?”

“That's none of your affair,” she snapped.

“Yes, it is,” he answered calmly. “Do you think I've followed you this far, to turn around and ride off empty-handed? Be sensible, wench. I'm not going to harm you.”

He stepped toward her, and she sprang back, whipping out her sword.

“Keep back, you barbarian dog! I'll split you like a roast pig!”

He halted, reluctantly, and demanded: “Do you want me to take that toy away from you and spank you with it?”

“Words! Nothing but words!” she mocked, lights like the gleam of the sun on blue water dancing in her reckless eyes.

He knew it was the truth. No living man could disarm Valeria of the Brotherhood with his bare hands. He scowled, his sensations a tangle of conflicting emotions. He was angry, yet he was amused and filled with admiration for her spirit. He burned with eagerness to seize that splendid figure and crush it in his iron arms, yet he greatly desired not to hurt the girl. He was torn between a desire to shake her soundly, and a desire to caress her. He knew if he came any nearer her sword would be sheathed in his heart. He had seen Valeria kill too many men in border forays and tavern brawls to have any illusions about her. He knew she was as quick and ferocious as a tigress. He could draw his broadsword and disarm her, beat the blade out of her hand, but the thought of drawing a sword on a woman, even without intent of injury, was extremely repugnant to him."

So it stands to reason that if  AoC is to depict women in Howards world there is a chance that a female warrior could no doubt handle herself - not with strength as Conan did, but with finesse.  Maybe they should consider giving females in game less strength and up their dexterity to account for the fact that though we're not as strong as our male counter parts - we can be very nimble and very fast

but so can men...I admire your attitude and appreciate your honesty and would fight next to you any day, but remember Conan was as blessed and trained as Valeria and could have spanked her.    Give women an appearance boost plus a new stat or ability ( like men lose intelligence when women are near).  Giving women  an unrealistic increase in DEX won't eliminate the level chasing men playing them either.  And I KNOW you (not many elven princesses demanding girl empowering game legislation) would still play the game,   Teala

I thought this excerpt from the official website pretty much covers it:

How true to the original writings of Howard are you intending to be?

The world that Howard created was a dark and gritty place and we certainly aim to very true to that feeling and atmosphere. Obviously Howard wrote the original works in the 1930's, a long time before world war two, Martin Luther King or the 60's sexual revolution, and some of his themes and characters are very much creations of their time that do occasionally jar our modern sensibilities, so Age of Conan will not be done in a tasteless, exploitative manner. Rest assured however that the world of Conan will never, ever, be politically correct and we hope that the game will capture all the elements of Howard's creation that make it what it is!

So no, it won't be politically correct, but I'm pretty sure they won't do anything that's directly degrading to women, even though they probably won't win any prizes from the feminist movementarians.

That aside, I'm not opposed to gender based stats, but I don't feel that the current class system supports it. Realism is one thing, but this is a game. I'm sure most people would like to play their fantasy character without being constrained by gender, and without certain classes being restricted to one gender.

I can't really say I've thought about creating a prostitute character, even were it possible, but I don't feel it would gain wide support in the community, and certainly not enough for the designers to implement it.

The suggestion that men should lose intelligence when they're within a X meter radius of a female is just silly, and would present a game balancing issue that would be hard to deal with by the designers.

Here is a suggestion then. They make a mature/adult only server - 21+, and then recreate as accurately as possible the world Howard envisioned and wrote about in his books. You'd have to fax a copy of your driver license or government ID to prove you are who you say you are or something before they'd open this server to you simply because it would be to over the top for anyone not and adult and it would protect Fun Com from a liable suit. You'd get all the blood, gore and whatever your imagination might come up with - one catch...you must role-play when on this server. If you sign on and start harassing others, or spamming BS in chat or anything to disruptive to game play - other players can flag you and report you. That means there would have to be a way to exam a players game logs to determine if the reports are true. If they are, you'd get two warnings, first one is just a warning, second is suspension of the account for 14 days, and on the 3rd your account is permantently booted from the server.

On this server, there would be clearly defined gender differences. Plus I think it would be so cool to implement perma death on this server. Just give each player 1,000 lives. After they finish the single-player tutorial and go to the MMO part of the game the 1,000 lives are activated. Hehehe...when it hits 0 your character joins Crom or Mitra because it is forever dead.

Cost for this mature server and the chance to really experince Conan's world - $35 US a month. So now the question is...how many of you would join me on such a server?

yes thats just what we need another reason for guys to play as female characters...

Off course you are free to roleplay one if you choose one. In terms of RP-believability a prostitute would definatly fit in the conan lore, unlike for example LOTRO where a prostitute (male or female), simply wouldn't fit. :D
It's pretty canon to have barbarian warrior women... Lots of women could kick butt in the Conaniverse. "prostitute" isn't exactly a playable player class, unless the prostitute gave some sort of buff with her services. But then you'd need male prostitutes as well, since a lot of barbarian warriors were undoubtably hetero women or gay men.

I know all the pimply faced 15 year old guys who want to see big breasts don't want to hear this but that's life.

At least in RL history they were. I know it's not a topic a lot of us want to talk about but prostitution goes all sorts of different ways. You can't just have female prostitutes that take care of men... and don't think that people wouldn't play every type of prostitute under the sun, and have a good clientele to boot, no matter which way they swung

Ah...the age old question of servers with enforced roleplaying... If anybody out there has an example of a game where forced roleplaying actually worked, I'd really like to hear about it. I'm all for the idea, but there just doesn't seem to be enough money in those kind of servers to justify the manpower needed to actually enforce it. $35 seems very steep...I'd go as far as $20 I think (especially since the $ is going down the drain and I'm a non-US citizen )

Being an old pen & paper player, I'd really like to see some more roleplaying in online MMORPGs. I mean, there's a "RPG" in there, right? I haven't experienced that since Everquest, and still there was l337 kids laughing at you because you made an effort to get into character, which for me makes it almost impossible to have an immersive experience.

Im a pen & paper guy too from times gone by. I don't see anything in this game stopping me from "getting into character" and enjoying it as best as can be so far. A large percentage of the Acolytes have a "Backstory" posted up, and intend on following their character development along those lines if possible. Pretty much all have been wrote with the current information available about the game too.

Thats not to say our Guild will be all RP as that isnt the case, people are free to chose how they want to present their character so to speak. There's no laughing at anyones efforts as we strive to be able to recruit the more mature player. As we approach 300 members I would hesitate to say a large portion wouldn't be interested in a $35 server with the extra bonus' on it. Something like that I would expect to be included with the game from scratch or with an expansion because the lore and world is just SO BIG. Funcom have said they are only making MMO's from now on which is great. They are a company whose developers DO listen to all idea's put forward with a good backing to them. This idea might gain and carry more weight on the official forums if laid out a bit better.

    Will avatars be "anatomically correct"?

After all, this is a European-developed game, and Europeans are far less squeamish about such things than Americans. Besides, I seem to remember some fairly hot sequences from Conan books, not explicit but quite evocative.

I don't suppose there will be an "equipment"-size adjustment for male avatars, even if it's present.

Yeah, the real question is do you want to cyber with a woman avatar who is very, very likely a man in real life? The answer from a normal, straight male would be hell no. That is a sick thought....

And actually cyber-sex with anyone on the internet male or female is also considered a sick thought by the majority....So no, no, and no again. Perverts please seek out Second Life for such an mmo experience.

I would be there in a heartbeat. I would love for games to be true to their IPs. This is a harsh world, and it is not PC. There was no Equal Rights movement in this world. It is not our world. If you play a game, you shoudl be able to distinguish it from reality. That's actually a big beef I have with WoW...the community has a hard time with that, and ther eis no way to roleplay without being constantly jarred by things that remind you of reality.

Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

Why not? Players with female avatars will be quite able to pick a badonkadonk butt and watermelon sized boobs if they wish.   Whats stopping them from adding a little bulge to the male's loincloths?

However, seriously, no they won't be anatomically correct in the sense that one could remove all covering and see the details.

I think that at the begining the population will be like 99% male, because i mean honestly even if you are a rl girl, who wants to be doing sexual favors right from the begining of the game? it won't appeal to anyone at all, so i predict this game
will become a massive multiplayer online sausage fest. MMOSF. :] but really, who in their right mind is gonna want to play a female toon???

    Strongwilled, independent, and confident women.

There have been several threads on the O-Boards, and I suspect you would be surprised how many women are on those forums already.
