SOE has been itching to play with new pricing models, and have been doing it some already in other titles. RL money for in game items. RL money for access to content. Etc. My gut tells me they will use that on this game. Anyone heard anything? I am a little interested in this game, but if it is a buy your way to end game affair that would ruin it for me.

After reading their gameplay model where equipment = class, I have no doubt they will utilize the microtransactions systems to gouge their players. How long do you think it will be before we see exclusive item sets available only through purchase from their "item shop?"

Won't happen, EU countries will tack on the VAT and that will kill their European playerbase. Also, the IRS is keen on taxing any real dollar transactions related to MMOs now, just wait for Congress to tack on a tax either next year or a couple years down the road. That's why SOE only did it with a few games, they know the tax-man is not too far behind on this economic activity.

I agree. Why fix something that isnt broke? The traditional model works fine! Pay for the client, get first 30 days free, then a monthly subscription from there on. One interesting aspect is that it appears you can progress in the game (to some degree) while being offline via the use of NPC Operatives. Everything is pretty vague at this point but it looks like they can obtain equipment/items or perform some other task for you even while you are offline. You will even have the option of having the operative text message/email you with updates... I know I've mentioned that in other posts, but that is what originally drew me to this game (that and the unique genre).
As for rewarding players for paying their monthly subscription with in-game uber-cash, or items would only separate the beginners with the veterans... which I think is something they are trying to avoid to some degree. I think this system could work in some games but not this one.
We'll find out in good time I'm sure.
People have to realize, since the monthly fee for MMO's seems to be stuck on 14.99 (with some exceptions of course) companies are going to look for ways to expand their revenue (esp for games that don't draw WOW-like numbers) by selling advertising, product placement, and item shops in game.
Vanguard tried it by selling premium web services for a few bucks extra (don't laugh, I signed up for them) and we can expect more games to try different things to raise more cash.

Honestly, in an industrialized setting like the Agency, I have no problems with in-game advertising so long as it isn't breaking the game feeling. That is, I don't want to see advertisments flashing around the border of frame; i'd rather see a cleanly integrated Coca-Cola Bill Board in game that fits thematically.

I agree with ya here. Being this game is placed in real world settings, there are capabilities of bilboards, vehicles, stores, etc that could have advertising on them. if i get a popup or something in my line of vision flashing at me saying GO BUY THIS AT WALMART, i'll puke
Agree...but,
Well we dont know that's what they have planned. I do think that would be a bad idea and it would set a poor standard in which others may follow. I just think a system like this is flawed on so many different levels. I think they should stick to a monthly sub.
Regardless....I am going to play this game because I like the genre.
