Monthly fees

I dunno about all of you but the worst thing about mmorpg's is most definitly the monthly fees!

Personally i would rather pay a higher amount for the game like $250 then have to pay monthly fees, do you think game companies would able to do something like this?? what do you think about it??

If you buy the game for say $40 and then put in $210, adding up to 250 im pretty sure you would get at least 1.5 to 2 years of play. Most games have very good discounts if you sign up for very long times, for example anarchy online goes from $13 to $8 if you sign up for a year. meaning the 210 dollars would buy you 26months of play. most other games have similar very large discounts.

I very much doubt any company would release a game for even 100$+ as that would nerf sales to zero, even with unlimited play time. On possibility, with a very big maybe, would be to sell the game with different value gamecards included. Like:

40$: Standard issue with one month free.
    60$: 4 months
    80$: 9 months
and so on, giving you more play per buck the higher you get..

i think that this monthly fee is also very good, because it is making people, who won't like this game and just ruin it, to not use the game.

but, they should put a 7 days trial to the game for people to check the game so they could decide if the like the game and not just pay and not use it.

    sorry about the bad english

Alright, let me show you why MMORPG's need monthly fees:

    1. Bandwith costs - HUGE amounts of bandwith are being used to operate this game, imagine 1000 simultaneous players slashing, casting spells, talking, etc..., then multiply that times the number of servers they have, the bandwith is incredible. And Bandwith isn't cheap, so that costs lots of money.

    2. Computers required for hosting - Trust me, the amount of computers and physical processors they need are ALOT, and they don't come cheap, that's for sure. Those cost a ton of money.

    3. Employees - They need to pay their employees somehow, and with all the money they are spending on bandiwth and computers, they need more money to pay their employees, and on top of that, their employees are developing the game even after it releases, because an MMORPG doesn't just stay the same forever right?

Trust me, even if you put a prive tag of $250 for the game, it just wouldn't work, not as many people would buy it, and they still wouldn't have enough money to pay for the game. Think of it, is it easier to pay $13 a month or $250 up-front? I think I'll take option A.

Monthly fees have an added effect of keeping the idiot factor down.  It would be an interesting experiment to have different fees for different servers.  I bet the more expenisive servers would attract a better group of people.  Guess we'll never know... but look at battlenet for an example of the type of people on a free server.

though i always behave nice on a mmorpg i would still chose the cheapest server so i could use the money saved for other things.

keep it looower so we can play too? you know ,6 not in every country you have a salary thats adequate. I'd like it if it was a like 5-7 $ a month, btw i don't agree on the idiot factor.

I don't like idiots but i absolutely hate rich and spoiled ones, i see people paying hundreds of $ on ebay to buy accounts and waste them, its just plain stupid.

Do not make em free do, because that would mean no good updates and crowded laggy servers.

Shit i'm bad... I self educated myself in ways of controlling feelings, now nothing feels like it's true... gotta be an assasin or sumtin.

Another thing that pisses me off. There should be a rule that makes it illegal to sell accounts, money, etc.
o ebay. That just takes away from the game experience. What is the point of playing a game if you just buy a pretrained character. And it also enables people to get items that they couldnt normally get in the games. Its just dumb if you ask me.

It is usually against the rules.

It is just that the game companies have found that there is nothing they can do about it... Because it is not illegal in the eyes of the law...

Then we shall just ask the people to please stop ruining our gaming experiences. Nonviolently of course.

For the oringal post: a game company that tried to sell a game for $250 on the shelf would be committing financial suicide. That is what is referred to as "price prohibative". That is to say: very few people would buy it.

It is primarily a defensive a legal stance. If the MMOG company condoned the sale of items it would implicitly accept liability for the products that are sold. You might be able to successfully sue if lag/exploits/scams/bugs caused you to lose money, and companies simply don't want to deal with that issue at all...thus, the entire process is ruled out by the EULA.

In addition to this: a lot of these companies consider all of the items in the game their intellectual and physical property and they don't like the idea that other people will profit from it. This gets down into the debate about copyrights, and you can plug a lot of the pros and cons of it from the debates relating to music sharing. I think this is a dubious issue, but there's no doubt that companies take a hard stance for this reason from time to time (Verant made a big stink about it back in the earlier days of EQ).
