Well here is something that i haven't seen posted on this forum not saying it hasn't been posted i just haven't seen it so i am going to bring it up and talk about it... Now lets say if a company was daring enough to tackle such a product the possibilities are nearly endless there are about 900,000 known insect species,I look at that as possible different Races/Classes of course they would have to narrow it down and look at the more popular species that we know about and the different classifications Ants,Beetles,Termites-I would say would be the most likely to have the most possibilities as i am no Insect expert so excuse me if i forgot one,I can see the ant's have many classes as they do extensive colonization and ranks through out,i am not sure about beetles..But i do know Termites are similar to ants in colonization..There are probably a heep more bugs i left out as i said i am no insect expert but the general idea of this being attempted is pretty cool and i hope to see it done soon.

You can't have equipment, you can't have any magic, you can't have almost everything...
All you'd do would be: "Get Food! Build Hive! Feed Eggs/Larvae!"...
I really don't see it as a MMO-RPG.
However, some semi-MMO-RTS, thingy could work...basically, pick your Race, and build up a Hive, Colonies and so on...
But, something that might suit you is in the works already: Spore.
Not a classical MMO.
What Spore does is:
You, as Player develop your own Species, first as a One-Cell Creature, then as a Fish-like creature, then on the Land, then you control your tribe, then your city, then your civilization, then you can even go into space and colonize other planets.
Thing is:
As long as you have an I-Net connection, your Species is being Uploaded to a Spore Server, and Species from other Players are being downloaded, and integrated into your World as it fits. (If your world lacks Carnivores, for example, some Carnivore species is downloaded and added to your world).
Because your Playstyle determines the Character of your Creatures later on, you sort of interact with other players. If you play very aggressively, the AI which controls your Species on other PCs will also be very aggressive.
Spore will release somewhere ~Q1 08. Maybe you should read up some info about it, you can create your insects there ;-)

"...and with that cryptic comment, I'm off to bed!"
Hahaha, omg, what the heck.
Last night while I was at work I was thinking about this myself. But then I also thought to myself, if someone did make this sort of MMO it'd probably be geared towards kids younger than 10. But if someone wanted to it could be rated T...
It would definately be a unique world for a MMO.
Oh yes. I'd second the point about Spore. It looks good, cant wait for it to be finished and released.

Well, let's be honest, most MMORPGs have Human characters that can hold 100s of items and they don't even have a backpack on. I'm sure it people wouldn't realise that these insects shouldn't be holding items.
I would actually like to see a game like this. Like what you described, Elgareth, only with PvE, PvP, character building etc. I've played a Warcraft 3 mod in this genre, and I loved it. Different races for different insects would actually be pretty fun. I think it would definately be possible.
Id make it like an rts style mmo.
player made hives/ant hills or whatever that you fill with npc workers to gather resources for your colony. The resources buff everyone in a different way, depending on what is being collected. This is your 'gear'.
Your npcs vary from basic workers ,soldiers and scouts to breeder types and queens. These could be made in crafting, along with additional parts for your home.
Your insect life is spent by clearing npc bugs(which randomly spawn, and vary in difficulty) from other areas so your drones can farm there too. You can attack other player colonies and steal their resources, kill their workers etc and take them over.
you could have random dangers like flooding, fire and of course kids with magnifying glasses.
would certainly be a different and interesting move away from the usual hack n slash elf em up,if a developer ever tried somethign like it.
Id be a millipede i think
Well, I could actually imagine your average 3rd person MMO.
I would explain exactly what I think the game would be like, but I would be writing it for hours, and no one would even take the time to read it.
i personally love this idea i want somthing diffrent man why dont you go learn to make mmos id p2p for a mmo like this

I'm full to the brim of ideas for this.

Your ant-avatar gets beat up by an attacking colony, but survives? He gains more health and armor value.
He successfully kills his enemies? He gains an increase in critical hit abilities through discovering the anatomy of enemies.
The possibilities are truly endless.

This is where you use your imagination friend. It's not like it is currently in development.
1. You could make it an RTS
2. give bugs a mind of there own, armor tribal stuff like there doing with that mushroom game(gamecock is publishing cant remember name).
3. magic/tinkering with human stuff to use against your enemys. It has a great pvp concept behind it.
Eversince i saw that bug RTS in a computer gameing monthly mag, i have had the op's idea. I think its a half-life source mod.

Honestly, you could have an MMORPG based on amoeba if you implemented it correctly. IMHO, game mechanics, combat dynamics, and a fully realized world determine whether or not an MMORPG is successful.
Now, that being said, I always found insects to be real high in the "cool" factor. I used to love my insect transformers (Insecticons!). If a game company brought a fully fleshed out, insect based MMORPG to market, I would definitely be interested. Some of the basic RPG classes can all easily be represented by insects.
Mage could be a bombardier beetle en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_beetle
Warrior could be a rhinoceros beetle en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoceros_beetle
Rogue could be an assassin bug en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin_bug
Not really sure how to work out a healer type bug, hehe.

there was a WC3 mod called Bugs, it was pretty good. You had to collect food, kill other bugs and also lay eggs. Sounds a bit lame but it was rather good.
It would be interesting and something that's unique in the MMO genre to design such game with the system...
